  1. I have been popping at rooks the last few days but having much success.

Had one today, easy shot it was at the top of a tree, I was shooting at 45deg up at it, 30 yards, full choke 32g #6 knocked it out the tree but it was very much alive and needed another round to finish it off.

Strange as I had plenty of time to aim and it was a good hit.

I am thinking that #6 is not much good. All I have otherwise is 32g #5 or 36g #3.

I am tempted to use the #3 36g on them.

Sam, can I ask why you dont carry a priest? To use another cartridge on a wounded rook is to say the least unprofessional, yes if there was a danger of it escaping and suffering a prolonged death but to blast it with another barrel imo is not something to make a habit of, especially in company.

With regard to your apparent lack of shooting prowess, my advice would be to draw several Rook silhouettes on a large board and see exactly where your shot is going, there is no reason why no6 shot at that range should not account for the Rook if placed correctly.

I think you will be suprised when you see your pattern in relation to the target.

  2. D2D, there's nothing plastic on the SAK moderators. It's all machined aluminium.

I know that Sako sold a mod made of plastic.

Thanks, having just looked at it closely, you are 100% right it is alloy that just goes to show how light it is. I always thought the casing was some kind of plastic material.

  3. Are there differrent types, compression fit, screw on, etc?

What are the differences in the different modles and brands?

What is the "Best" model thought to be?

    Cheers,

    NTTF

Hi nttf, I had the metal Parker Hale mod, heavier, longer, louder and more expensive, then fitted the plastic SAK which proved to be the opposite in all respects, so imo it has to be the SAK.

The SAK is also very much easier to take down and clean.

  7. Hi again,

My lightforce 140 scope lamp arrived today. At the end of the wire is a socket for plugging into the car.

Firstly I don't get why a scope mounted lamp wouldn't come with a conection for 12v batteries, ie for walking the fields, and....

Secondly (you could see this one coming)

Where can I get an adaptor? I got the lamp from Uttings, but no joy there.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi BT,

Get your gunshop to order deben part no.DA2615 fused wiring loom batt to 12v socket priced at £8.95

    Hope this helps.

  8. i havnt really shot crows before ( except the odd one when after rabbits ) but i have been granted permission on 170 acres of land from a local farmer who has a massive problem with crows!!!

this at the moment is the only permission i have and wouldnt like to disapoint the farmer by not shooting a great deal of them!

what tactics would you all use for this ?

he has just called saying there is literally 100s of crows on one particular corn field he has just drilled and has said i can go any time! this is the first proper permission i have and wouldnt like to get kicked off it due to not culling enough crows

    heres the gear i have

    Falcon FN19 .22 complete with silencer & 3x9x40 scope ( no mill dots though ! )

    Camo clothing

A flask of tea if i have to sit and wait !!

    Hi RBS,

What your farmer is looking for is an end to the problem, something missed so far, I get these calls regularly, how to go about shooting them has already been covered but you need to leave the field at the end of the day with a number of rooks/crows hanging from 6ft sticks, to keep them up away from charlie, break the wings so they flap in the wind, avoid footpaths obviously.

If its a large field start putting them up at the furthest corner to concentrate the birds towards you also so you can return to your hide spot next day.

So add sticks and twine to your flask :good: Do you have a shottie? If not think about getting one as you now have a sizeable permission.

Since corvids and rooks in particular are the last ones to bed, you might get a late evening finish, almost til dark and still waylay them as they flight home.

Good luck and make sure you leave the farmer your number, he will call you every year if you do a good job for him.

  9. Right Ive held it in long enough and I have to share this with someone.....

Had a phonecall today, was in Lidle buying veg oil for the Landy, when the mobile goes and a very nice sounding young lady from Sporting Shooter tells me I have won the Feb comp for a Beretta Silver Pigeon Xtra Wood......me I never win anything, so Im gobsmacked.

I remember doing the comp and texting the answer, only because it was doddle and there was nowt on the box at the time.

Very happy shooter from Kent :good:

  10. http://www.zeroriflescope.co.uk/

    That scope, I assume it's a Hawke?

The adjustment you mention is to compensate for parallax error ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax ). What range you zero your rifle at depends on what ammo you will be shooting and at what range you are comfortable shooting out to. Most people with subsonic ammo seem to choose about a 60yd zero to give the best compromise of hold under and over for most general work - very much depends on what you are doing with it. For instance if you are just shooting rats @ 30yds and no more, you'd be better off choosing a 30yd zero - anything between 5-30yds you could aim dead on and kill - with a 60yd zero you'd need to hold under @ 30yds which wouldn't make any sense.

One thing to note is that the point of impact will change as you change magnification on that scope. For rabbits I'd pick a magnification, 8x is plenty, and then zero it. If you zoom in your point of impact will have changed (as it will if you zoom out) - most cheap scopes suffer from this.

Pin at what range does this change in the point of impact occur? I shoot every week on our 50m club indoor range and sometimes shoot with 6.5x mag to simulate poor light conditions, then zoom it up to 20x to observe results, then I might shoot at 20x or any mag inbetween, I have not noticed any difference in the poi, the scope in question is a Hawke Niteye.

Parallax incidently is set at 75yds which gives the clearest target picture.

For my part I think it's all linked to a society that does not "do" shame anymore.

It's sad but he has hit the nail very firmly on it's head

what a load of assuming stereotyping judgmental **** who ever he is he needs a checkup from the neckup  If people go out assuming this having a preconceived idea about people because they wear track suits and jewelry then when they see someone that fits the bill they will judge them. what a load of testicles

Are you for real funky

As a old skinhead and former BNP member (amongst other right wing organisations) I can say that hand on my heart, and on my dogs life's, that that gaffa's posting is a true picture of the dire state this country is in

There is 'no shame' from the parents in todays climate so how do the sprogs stand a chance of being valuable citizens to society in the future ???

Makes very interesting reading and sadly confirms my view of society today, no doubt B1 will post shortly when he reads it, theres lot of truth in some of his posts. Extreme on occasions but with an unmistakable ring of truth that we cannot deny.

Parenting skills have declined steadily with each passing generation, together with personal freedom with each successive government.

Thanks Mung for finding it and sharing.

  13. Had the best days training with Amber today I have ever had in the 18 months I have had her. I took her and Brook up the shoot to do some training and things couldn't have gone better.

Firstly I walked with her through one of our woods, hunting and retrieving dummies I was throwing into cover. Everyone was delivered to hand with a sit and present.

We then did some steadiness work out in the field. Sat her down about 25 metres away and threw 7 dummies all around her. Rock steady - not even a sign of a cocker shuffle!!!! Did the same again with the same result! Chuffed!

Then I sat her ten metres away and through a dummy 30 metres over her head. Sent her for that and got my mate to throw a dummy across her on the way back. She looked interested, but with a bit of encouragement came back, sat and presented the dummy for me. Sent her for the one my mate through and she presented it the same. Did this two more times and she ignored the distraction both times, presented the dummy, and retrieved the distraction. This was the first time I have tried distraction training with her and I was really pleased with her performance.

Now I'm just waiting for the next offday lol

    Well done,

A good exercise is to sit the dog about 25yds in front of you with a 25yd space behind it, throw a dummy out 20yds to the left of the dog at 90deg, another 20yds out to the right and a further dummy 20yds over the dogs head behind it, 3 dummies in all. Vary the sequence everytime. Be ready with the stop whistle if the dog attempts to go for the wrong dummy.

So you send, right. left and go back in any order, but try the first thrown dummy first to test the dogs memory, always pick the last remaining dummy yourself.

When the dog has mastered your handsignals with the dummies landing in full view throw the dummies into light cover to make it more interesting.

If the dog is shakey on hand signals go back a stage to 2 dummies, using a fence/wall, sit the dog against the fence, and throw just lefts and rights. Again pick several of the dummies yourself each training session.

When teaching the go back, walk the dog alongside a fence/wall, sit the dog and walk on several paces then turn to face the dog and throw a dummy back over its head 15/20yds return to the dog and walk on 20yds again sit the dog and stand in front a couple of paces and give the go back command(palm towards the dog arm extended pushing motion) gradually extend the distance after sitting the dog, so that you can sit it on the stop whistle and send it back from any distance.

These two exercises combined will enable you to carry out the three dummy test first described.

Pm me if unsure of anything I have outlined, have fun.

  14. My good friend just phoned me to tell me that he had stayed in a hotel one night last week in barnsly yorkshire .When he went to his car in the morning he found the drivers door window had been smashed and his sat nav and road angle had been stolen . He managed to get his car to a auto windscreen depot for replacement .They didnt have the window in stock so ha had to wait around for 4 hours until they could find one . He lost a full days business and to rub salt in the wounds he got flashed by a camera at road works because he didnt have his road angel .I know what i would like to do to these scum . Harnser .

These scum even smash their way in if they spot the suction marks on the screen, in the hope its been put in the glovebox.

My ins co state that satnav is not covered unless I am in the vehicle with it.

  15. and more.........................

What mileage has it done? It looks to be in fair shape for the year.

Looking at the number of air fresheners hanging up, have you left something in there and forgotten it for a week or two? :good:

  16. thanks guys i did put a new fuse in for cigarette lighter a bit back i now have a rough idea to what to look for cheers guys

When the cig lighter fuse blew what else didnt work? Have you got a wiring diagram?

    D2D

  17. Harsners idea sounds good, but imo a better way is to freeze 10 good birds then use them and replace them with fresh shot birds each time.

ok you may sometimes draw a blank and have a bad day, but when that happens just fall back on normal decoys, then you might live to draw your pension

I can hear the "I eat all I shoot brigade" muttering thats a waste but it is pest control
