  1. I am looking to gat a chocolate labrador and was about to put a deposit down on a young pup only to find someone had beaten me to him! That got me thinking as to why i want a dog as apposed to a bitch? To me the only real reson (as a first time owner) is that bitches have seasons and special care has to be taken around other dogs at this time but this could be resolved by having her spayed.

Im now leaning towards getting a bitch as i really fancy a pup from this litter as both sire and dam have a fantastic ft and working history which is just what im after.

Any advice from the more experienced dog owners out there?

My advice is that if its your first attempt at gundog training get a bitch and one with as good a working line that you can afford, most are more biddable than dogs, AND dont buy a chocolate they are stupid, thick and to my knowledge have never yet won a field trial.... you have been warned

Very best of luck whichever way you decide.

  2. As safety is such an important issue and its raining, also not wanting to get it wrong I have got the books out and quote;

"Safety catches.. the limitations of these devices cannot be too widely understood. In practically all boxlock guns, they merely bolt the triggers.

When applied they do not uncock the hammers or do anything to prevent them from falling and firing the cartridge. Faulty construction or adjustments, undue wear, the intrusion of a particle of foreign matter or even a severe jolt are all capable of causing the inadvertent discharge of a boxlock gun at "safe".

Sidelock guns are safer because their locks incorporate intercepting safety sears, which are designed to catch the hammers if they should fall unintentionally.

But even intercepting sears are not infallible : the only safe gun is an unloaded gun... not merely a gun that was believed to be unloaded, but one that can be seen to be unloaded."

So there you have it, also something I remembered reading from the back of the Eley diary when I was a boy.....

"All the pheasants ever bred wont repay for one man dead"

Something to think about when you are out with your mates and crossing fences, ditches etc, always break the barrels or take out the shell from the semi.

  3. OK guys, no replies so far,

have researched & read all posts regarding 17 hmr, mods & anything rimfire. Spent hours on here & elsewhere but wanted to know the latest on these mods before spending cash.

I'm sure there is somebody out there that can help, and just wanted an honest opinion from experienced users otherwise it's relying on my local RFD ********.

    Please reply,

    Terry.

Possibly the reason that there have been no replies to your question would be that we have collective experience of one or the other but not both mods, I myself have three different mods but as with most members these are on different calibers so cannot be compared.

The only comparison I can offer is between a parker hale and a sak fitted to a .22..... the sak wins hands down being both shorter and quieter.

There is an expensive mod that my rfd is pushing, it may be the one you refer to, he demonstrated it out back of the shop and I was not impressed compared with the sak, BUT you cannot form an opinion from standing just 10ft away as we were, the sonic crack from a .17 imo cannot be efficiently suppressed anyway. Having used a sak for some time now I have no complaints at £30.

  4. Rabbit shooting a couple of nights ago and my mates Hatsun Escort seemed to fire off a shot when he was walking without he says having his finger on the trigger! He had just fired off two rounds and loaded it up with another, so it was running with two rounds loaded. Gun has otherwise been totally reliable. The gun was pointing exactly where it should of been, to the ground, so no harm done. Anyone had this happen on a Hatsun Escort or indeed a semi auto?? Suggestions please??? Or do you think finger may have been involved :good:

    Admiral

At no time do you mention if the safety was on or not, unless you have mounted the gun and are about to pull the trigger the safety should be on, it should be on all the time, right up to that last moment of firing.

Thats ALL OF THE TIME in case anyone misunderstood, whoever trained/guided/introduced your friend to shooting needs his a*se kicked for not doing the job thoroughly enough for it to be ingrained.

I have no doubt, would put money on the safety being off. Sooner or later this kind of sloppymess comes round to bite you in the bum with dire and tragic consequences

Im with Markbivvy on this and wouldnt have anyone in the same field with me who didnt follow basic safety rules.

Recently in the news we heard of two young lads sharing a hide, one shot the other.... now if the safety was on until he pulled the trigger he could not have shot his friend, unless his friend leant out of the hide in front of the barrels 28" away?

  5. This is with a fridge that runs cold by the way as they vary a lot.

As opposed to a fridge that runs hot? :P Sorry Jerry , couldn't resist.

I would normally be quite happy to devour beef or lamb and even chicken a week on, only recently has the wife convinced me to worry more about chicken and pork.

The biggest problem is she has to attend food & hygiene courses for work and they have some ridiculous ideals.

Not such a silly statement, we have two fridges one a larder fridge in the kitchen and the other a fridge freezer in the utility room, the one in the kitchen just about holds the temp as a fridge should in this hot weather and its working hard during the day, but the other one will freeze water if turned up a notch so they do differ alot, you might say that the kitchen fridge is running hotter than the other one?

I might add that I keep my beers in the utility room fridge and they are I C E cold ymmmmmm. :good:

  6. I would contact them for what it's worth.

There could well be falconry forums where there is a missing bird list and any sightings that are reported will be appreciated.

    FM :good:

Sounds like a fair enough suggestion, there could well be a search going on for the bird and every scrap of info would be appreciated, if only to confirm the bird was still fit and well.

  7. Hi people my name is Lee,

I live in the city and have done all my natural life. My family and everyone i know also live in the city centre of Hull.

A few years ago a bought a £100 rifle (not to sure what it was) and i did a bit of target practice and then sold it on. Now at the tender age of 21 i have bought another rifle but this time with a great intention of taking this seriously  . Its a cheap £20 rife from our car boot. I now know this is a B2 (chinese rip off) and could not take down a tin can ha  .

OK OK enough of going around the houses. I have had a look at buying a BSA lightning XL which i WILL be purchasing BUT............................................My girlfriends dad said he would not like to come hunting with me because as he thinks that it is not right to shoot live quarry.

I made some of the points why i think shooting vermin is ok and he made his points (to which some was valid) on why its wrong

I know shooting rabbits and woodies to eat would be a purpose behind it but shooting for a sport IS THAT RIGHT OR WRONG!

Sorry for the somewhat confussed ramble but just thought you knowledgeable guys would help :)

Ok so perhaps you would like to set the ball rolling by telling us what your argument would be for shooting, and the difference, as you see it, between shooting vermin as opposed to other living creatures.

At what age did your family take you to see Watership Down? Do you like to watch war films? and finally how old is your girlfriend?

    D2D

  8. i had 3 lightforce lamps now 140's & 2x 170's @ approx £70+p/p

all have let me down at some time or another, the poor workmanship of the soldering, cheep brittle wire & poor quality switches that jam up, break etc etc... is it me, or are they the usual chineese poo !! as i take care & maintaine my equipt, i dont expect this for the money !

how do you find the lightforce lamps in general ??

I have in front of me a Nightforce original Aussi lamp with built in dimmer its about 5 years old and the quality far exceeds Lightforce, the filter is housed in a hinged frame and the switches are beefier when compared with the Lightforce which may well be a cheapo copy for the european market?

My Lightforce lamps do give trouble with the switches but other than that I find them superior to the Deben tracers.

I have actually started repairing Lightforce lamps for local farmers, word soon got around and hey its bought me a few beers :yp:

  9. Cheap tat if you ask me

A pic of the one for sale might help you sell it :sad1:

Magman, obviously you are entitled to your opinions just as we all are but if you posted that on one of my sale posts I,d be pretty pi##ed of with you ??? and would very soon tell you so,after all if you dont want to buy it , what does it matter to you?

Your post is unhelpful and may put other less robust characters off posting at all, which is not the way forward for a healthy forum. :yp:

    D2D

  10. Having been involved for many years both in tests and trials, I wholeheartedly agree with what has been said and one of your comments sums it up perfectly, each time you go out its a learning curve, a training session for the next one. The handler has yet to be born that knows everything and is perfect, we are all learning and coming across different scenarios each time.

Your dog may well be "hot" on some occasions and you have to work harder to overcome this, the biggest problem I have seen is the tendancy for some handlers to "overhandle" and not allow the dog to do its work, they get very excited almost to boiling point waving arms and repeating commands.

The day out should be fun,and if you get a place then its a bonus but always learn something from the day, and next time.......... :hmm:

  11. Humungous discounts to PW members I presume :hmm:

I shall be there with my shopping list :hmm: doing my bit to ensure the fair distribution of wealth continues ???

Any other members going to be trading?

    D2D

  12. CZ varmint all the way mate :good: , dunno if u can get it in synthetic though?

CZ are making .17 hmr available in synthetic in August, exact date of delivery as yet unknown but my RFD has 10 on order mine being no1

    Worth waiting for imo.

  13. I am looking for a Landrover Defender for work.

Can someone tell me the difference between a County and Standard Defender. I assume that the County has more toys

but can't find a list of what they are.

I am also correct in assuming that only the "hardtop" version would be considered as commercial vehicle ?

    Can you help please...

Although my current work landy is a 300tdi swb hardtop, and I am pleased with it, I am reliably informed by himself, no names but he is shy of posting lately on landy topics I notice  you know who you are

The 200tdi is cheaper to buy and also easier to work on than the 300tdi, I also run a TD5 Disco and dont rate the engine at all.

If you are going offroad alot avoid the lwb you can ground easily in dips with the overhang and have to be recovered sideways :good: Seen it happen a few times when the nobs tried to follow me on shoot days

Good luck with whatever you decide,

    D2D

  14. As bob says nothing more frustrating than have to work out hold under for close shots, then missing. :P

Why do you think that all the books, old hands etc zero 1" over at 100yds....... ie Robert Bucknell has years of experience and knows more than we will ever learn regarding .223 and foxing generally.

If it aint broke dont try to fix it

    :good: D2D

would not offer any argument, other than wishing to set up with my permission in mind

    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/resource/re...s/223rembal.htm :hmm:

Fair comment, you must do what you are comfortable with, out of interest why did you choose Rems above the other brands for your new rifle?

  16. I know that what I am proposing is sneaky and unworthy of a good citizen  BUT what if everyone surrendered their tax discs for refund on 28th Feb and took out a new disc starting March 1st 09 in protest and therefore postponing the increase for a year?

Would it work? It would certainly get our message across and the system would go into overload
