  1. I am soft, i would have pointed out the mistake!

I worked in a store while i was a student to earn some beer tokens, i can remember £20.00 going missing at the end of the day, and all of us getting grilled, it was horrible, i am the sort of person who colours up and feels guilty even though it was nothing to do with me, and i had no idea how it went missing or if it was half inched?

In a past life I had weekly dealings with a major bank involving the withdrawal of large amounts of cash for my staff wages, several times over the years I had to send someone back up to the bank because the amount was short, not by much but still short, on just one occasion the amount was over in my favour by £100, whoopee one over on the bank...... but I knew the cashiers personally(small bank) and also knew that she would be accountable and worrying about the till shortfall...... so I went back myself and gave it to her before the mistake was recorded and poo hit the fan, she was very, very gratefull and that in itself was enough for me.

I dont like the banks and the way they wring every penny out of us but at the end of the day the staff are the same as us and go home every night to families as we do.

I believe in honesty and treating people the way I would like to be treated, the current world seems to have lost most of the values and the so called "respect" bandied about by todays youth absolutley shallow and worthless.

Just my ten pence worth :hmm:

    D2D

  2. I went to the pub, a big chain like Wetherspoon`s, to watch the rugby on Sunday and had a couple of pints of guiness, served by a lovely chatty young lady. I had a final pint after the match as my bus wasn`t due for 25 minutes, I`d missed one by 5 mins :hmm: and this time I was served by a know it all young man who seemed to be the "Duty Manager" as I needed change for the bus I gave him £10, but he gave change for £20 !

Sooooo what would you have done, give the extra £10 back or scupper your drink and leave ??

Take the greatest of pleasure in pointing out his mistake in front of said "chatty" young lady and give it back, usually the bar staff have to make up till shortages from an already paltry wage.

You dont need a tenner so badly I know.

If it were an oap that dropped it in the street you wouldnt hesitate to return it.

Maybe im old school but I sleep well :hmm:

    D2D

  3. I'm not having a dig, it's how the law is these days, if one of our Kent members walked up to you at a shoot and started humping your leg and you kicked him you would be in the wrong.

I'll bet you a box of Jaffa cakes that you will be told "if a child had been walking past holding a puppy................"

Hey I object to that, theres nothing wrong with us Kent lads, just cos we like a bit of "Dogging" now and then..... :good:

Seriously though Mr Lee You did well under the circs, is your Tetnus up to date? If not I would go get it done urgently.

  4. Thanks Bob. Not necessarily a reloading manual I'm after, just a "rifle shooters companion" type book. I read a lot, and am getting back into rifles again after many years away, and I've realised that I don't have much of a comprehensive guide that I can refer to when making choices etc. Things have changed quite a bit since was last involved, calibre fashion is moving on again (HMR is new and shiny, a while back it was 22 Hornet that everyone seemed to have, now it's .223, some of the previously "rare" calibres seem to be making a comeback, etc etc.) I just fancy having a weighty tome that I can refer to, not just Fox related, all things rifle really. I'll certainly be looking at some reloading literature too, Richard Lee's seems a good place to start. Just wondered if you had any suggestions.

    Thanks

I would not get too concerned with trends, fashionable calibers come and go, along with their associated problems, i.e. availability of ammunition, loading gear etc. The USA probably turns out 3 to 4 new calibers every year, all "must have's", but ballistically, for each one of them, there is probably 5 calibers already in use that perform equally well.

A 22RF, 223, 243 and 308 will cover anything and everything shootable in this country, you could skip the 243 if your quarry will be mostly larger deer, these are all well established rounds that will do the job, and will be around for a long time to come.

Book-wise, you could do worse than The Sporting rifle; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sporting-Rifle-Rob...6058&sr=8-2

Having read The Sporting Rifle by Robin Marshall-Ball, I can say its a close second to "Foxing" etc as an essential reference source.

It covers most questions on general sporting rifle use, calibers etc. Well written and illustrated a value for money book imo.

  5. I have recently acquired a load of halogen lights, light filters, split charge system etc and am looking to make a roof bar to mount some lamps to the roof of my truck.

Light bars are available on Ebay but only for the wider known makes of 4x4 (Landy etc) but obviously nothing for a Daihatsu Sportrak.

Custom bars are also available but they are outrageous money - there's one on at the moment for a lorry for £850 (with lights of course).

I reckon that all I need is some tubular aluminium or to butcher a "chunky" roof rack bar. Butchering the chunky roof rack seems the most viable option - using tubular aluminium would require some thought on how to mount it to the roof properly.

Anyone got any ideas or experience?

I lucked out on the set up and will post details of my findings shortly.....

Mung I used a set of lockable Thule roof bars, nice square section, and have mounted lamps, although your truck will have to have gutters.

  6. Hi guys, I'm a newbie and am now looking to get my first gun. I know you must get loads of these questions but any help would be much appreciated.

Anyways when I started looking the Price of the shotgun was about £1200, not its about £1700, apparetnly due to some sort of legislations the prices have gone up. This has now made the Beretta out of my budget, so i would like some recommendations on an alternative. I'll be using the shotgun mainly for trap/skeet and sporting but would also like the gun to be able to hangle Game shooting, as I probably will get invitations to go.

I have been practicing with a 12g 30" beretta 682 and thats doing well for me, but was thinking of gettind a different one.

    Any help?

Hi, if you are serious about buying a new Beretta I have a brand new Silver Pigeon Extra Wood up for grabs, it was a prize.

I would rather have had a new rifle but didnt have the option. PM me if you are interested.

  7. hello guys,

im best man at my brothers wedding on saturday an i need some advice because i've never done it before. im still working on the speach, an looking for a few gags, i like Munglers one about being ''a great cook in the kitchen and a hor.................ticulturalist in the garden'' but i reckon she'll probably start crying an run out :good: might be worth a go though.

and any advice on what i need to do on the day would be great too

    thanks, TAFF

Write down a few factual bulletpoints about the groom, then the couple.... enlarge around these...... start on a serious note, end with a few jokes about the groom NOT the bride or her mother

Hope this gives you something to build on, you have left it a bit late :good:

    :good: D2D

  8. Are these good rifles coz my budget is £500

    All replies much appreciated

Hi I shoot with one it does the job nicely, the two stage trigger is good and in my opinion it certainly is a value for money rifle.

Pm me if you have any specific questions and I will be happy to assist if I can.

    D2D

  9. well i have hit a real problem. when i got back this morning from shooting i emptied me pockets and put me clothes in the wash but i think i may have missed a pocket so my phone very kindly went in the wash with the rest of it. :good:

so i have just left me phone outside to dry off but it looks destroyed and as i was thinking about a new phone anyhow it could also be a good excuse lol :good:

so as i don't know much about phones or the new ones out etc. plz could u pass on some recommendations or reviews on a good phone.

i don't really want to spend more than £150 but need the sort of basics. (camera,bluetooth...)

would be greatfull for any advice.

    thank you

    charlie

  10. Hi chaps

Can anyone recommend/sell/swap a good starting book for a complete novice to homeloading?

I know nothing, have nothing except nearly a thousand .223 cases and a burning desire to save some cash whilst working the grey matter into a froth along the way :yp:

  11. Harpo no need to apologise, we are after all on the same side and we want only to put across maybe the best ways of dealing with various situations.

We have had uproar only last year where some treehuggers found a half dead fox and the farmer was given a hard time over it. Thats why I say if its shot and doesnt go down it must be found immediately and disposed of.

On the subject of Foxes in general I have been laid up for a day or two and have been looking at my warrener video collection, one thing that strikes me in every vid is the way they carry the Fox carcasses, either by one rear foot or by the tail in both cases with their arms and elbows up above waistline..... think about it carrying a damn big dog fox weighing half a ton across two or more fields like that.

We carry ours by a diagonal front and rear foot with the arm at a comfortable length, far easier to walk any distance like that.

Anyone who seriously wants to shoot Foxes properly could do worse than get hold of some of his tapes, he may come across as an oaf but he certainly knows what hes doing.

    :yp: D2D

  12. Firstly: That's all some EXCELLENT advice. This thread could easily be turned in to an invaluable fox-hunting sticky!

I'm well aware that using heavy shot is the RESPONSIBLE thing to do where foxes are concerned, but from hunting foxes for several years and knowing people who hunt foxes I know that it's not what happens. At least most of the time and at least around here.

I use 3s and 4s for foxes and it stops them dead. Usually after one shot, but as others have said; give them everything you've got to make sure! Everyone else I know, including a couple of gamekeepers, never use anything that heavy for foxes. Although obviously they tend to pack a .222-50 or similar when they're out *specifically* for a fox. However, last year there was at least one fox here killed with a .22LR and at least one killed with a welly! I kid you not.

I'd also disagree that you'd lose your shooting permission at a minimum if the land owner found a shot riddled fox... Obviously that isn't the outcome anyone wants, but when you're after a fox that's been running amok over hundreds of acres of game estate for the last few weeks then many people will justify any shot. Even if you can't still see the fox when you pull the trigger. That's another big no no that you wouldn't normally commit. Personally I'm still not comfortable with it... I know many who don't think twice (and who would still do it if they had) when it's a fox though.

If you have a fox PROBLEM. That is... you really need to get rid of them ASAP rather than getting rid of them at your leisure for sport. Then I'd recommend learning to set snares. I don't know anyone who hunts foxes that has more success shooting than snaring. Obviously it's not nice and it demands even more responsibility (and SKILL) than shooting. But it's what gamekeepers with serious problems do to keep in business. On the plus side, from my experience, you often find the fox still alive and unharmed by the snare and all it takes is a painless shot to the noggin.

If you are going to use snares though, remember: NO DRAGS. And check those things at least once a day! Although saying that... I've know a few keepers who don't even follow those rules.

PS: Regarding losing permission by wounding a fox. I actually know a keeper who banned a paying gun from shooting on the estate because he refused to take a 'risky shot' at a fox.

Harpo before taking things a tad too personal, remember we have alot of inexperienced and young shots on here who have never attempted to shoot a fox, my advice is to them, if you cant take it out cleanly then dont risk your permission by possibly getting a reputation as a reckless shot.

As for your keeper banning a paying gun for deciding not to shoot a fox on a driven day unless he is the shoot owner he should remember who is paying his wages.

  13. If you haven't got it already buy John Batleys Pigeon Shooting book 2nd edition and read and digest (it took me a few reads to get it all in). Best bit of kit you can buy for less than 20 quid! Teaches you all about field craft and understanding your quarry. John Batley shot proffessionally for 15 1/2 years and gained advice from the late great Archie Coates. I am also very impressed by Chris Green' floaters at around £45 each. :good:

Save yourself some cash, I have mint copy 2nd edition available, pm if you want it.

    D2D

  14. I have seen a few spectacular mayfly hatches, probably the best one was on a chalk stream at Rockbourne.

Its also amazing how close the dry fly imitations are to the real thing.

PS. I am busy tying 3 buzzer traces. :good:

    Thought you might

Tie a couple for me please for when you come over with the sprayer.

    :good: D2D

PS Stuart mention a possible meet at Rockbourne later in the year are you up for it?

  15. I'm after a little help from the forum members as reguards my defender 90 .

I'm wanting to go top less for the summer (now i'm ready for the comments about my Yorkshire puddings wobbling about and scaring people ) I have looked on exmoor trim and found the price of a bikini hood for my defender is a very reasonable £80 . The sticks for this hood are £210 . A vast amount of money for a bit of bent metal . Does anybody on here have some sticks which they would be willing to photograph , and take some measurements for me . so i could make my own please ?

all the best yis yp

    Pm for you.

    :good: D2D

  16. i use a five shot semi

using spsg's or ssg's upto 40 yards mainly but have taken a few when a longer shot was nessecary

been known to unload all 5 on occassions as a dead fox is the best

unless you pick it you can't claim it as that is the one that comes back to bite you on the ***

I too sometimes use FAC sect1 shotties, my main concern and advice to anyone shooting Fox with a shottie is that If you shoot at it it MUST go down, never take long or risky shots using inappropriate loads, if a farmer later finds a Fox riddled with shot and gangrene you can kiss your permission goodbye at the very least.

    :good: D2D

  17. what are the rules on doing this?is it humane?and i know this is probably a stupid question!

Some hard and fast rules for actually doing it...

The wind, windier nights are best, it masks any noise you make getting close to the fox, you should have it so that it's coming from the fox to you or going across left or right but never going from you to the fox. It also helps to blow away the smoke after the first shot, trust me this can be a real problem on a calm night if you need a second shot.

The moon, it's best done on darker nights. The less the fox gets to see the better. Also be very aware of your siluhette (spelling), basically don't walk across the brows of hill so a fox lower than you will see you against the night sky, also take into account the light from nearby towns or villages.

If you get a safe shot within 40 yards, never hesitate, shoot. If there's even a flicker of doubt, shoot again, but aim, don't just pull the trigger for the sake of it. If you go out with a shotgun and foxy decides to get the hell out of Dodge, sitting pretty at 100 yards is no good to you.

You can stalk foxes. Over time and if you go out on the same patch with an experienced person you'll find or be told about their runs. Remember them, foxes are creatures of habit and will use these runs all the time.

On using calls and callers. Best time is when they're hungry, just come out of the den and I want food! They'll come in to you like guided missiles, if you're making the right sound. BUT and this is IMPORTANT. They'll stop at a point, and decide to "wind" the call, basically they'll try to get downwind of you to smell what's making the noise. I use an electronic call, if I get a runner coming in I'll tend to drop it carefully and try to move 15-20 yards away from it. Say the wind is going right to left across you and the fox is heading right for you, then you'd go 15-20 yards to your left. I've had them come right in and I've not shot, because I know they're just going to think "Oh, ****! I need to "wind" this don't I?" and they move off again to come in broadside nicely. Broadside is always best profile to shoot them.

There are losts of tips and tricks to be honest.

36 gram BB cartridges are best I find. Like anything, if done right it's humane. If you wound a fox it'll not usually go far but it will try to hide, check well.

Good reply, informative and well written, well done John.

    :good: D2D

  18. Ermmm  Easy way but I dont think the HSE will like to see this pic, when somebody is beneath that bucket.

What would the Driver of the loadall say to the police if he injured or killed you?

What wrong with a king hitter?

    Df

It makes the job a darned sight easier/quicker if you are lucky enough to be able to use a digger, theres an article in June Sporting Shooter showing the exact same method used. in fact the guy holding the pole could well be Mung, or his dad

I see no problem with it except that Mung probably went sick very soon after the photo was taken, due to his nice new gloves getting too grubby??

    <_< D2D

  19. Good grief. :hmm:

    Thats quite clever.

No it`s very old, it was a forces favourite.

"What time is it mate ?"........"Cowboy time!" ........."Cowboy time, whatever do you mean??"

............" Ten to ten, ten to ten, ten to ten ten ten" (to the tune of the William Tell overture)

I think you have missed the joke H its

0950..... 10 to 10.... ten to ten..... ten ter den.... Tenterden.

    Simple innit?

We had a seriously good day, just a tad warm with church bells, steam trains , a spitfire overhead could have been in a time warp :good:

The sport was poor but the company excellent thanks lads.

    :good: D2D

  20. I will be coming in from a different direction, can we make the breakfast meet in Tenterden ?

Having telephoned round and found The Whistle Stop hasn't reopened yet and most places don't open until 9am, I would suggest The White Lion Hotel in Tenterden High Street, breakfast from 8am, with parking behind the hotel.

8.30am sounds about right, all those in agreement say "Aye :look:".

I will see you at the fishery, they open at 0815 come when you finished your "croissants and coffee" Stuartp wanted a breakfast as they were driving a fair few miles whats your excuse Cranfield? :look:

    See you all on sat,

    :good: D2D

  21. I am coming with Sgt Bang - who is a complete novice.

Drovers has been asked but hasn't replied just yet, as soon as he does, I will.

Mungler was interested, but last I heard just too damn lazy to reply

We will need breakfast, if either of you local boys can point us at somewhere near by that would be handy, it would also be a useful place to meet up for those getting there early.

Hi Stuartp had a think and only/best/convenient place for a passable brekkie is Sains (TN24 8YN 8am onwards) just a whisker off route junct9 m20 as you approach next roundabout (on route) take 1st out 800yds on left is store with full eating facilities.

Hope this helps and see you sat.

    :good: D2D

  22. NTTF, on your next scheduled trip we will fix up some trout fishing, thats a promise. :hmm:

I wouldnt say no to an invite

Visited the fishery last evening and walked around, the rises had to be seen to be believed, the water in the Dry fly only lake was boiling with rises,

I just sat for an hour taking it in as the sun went down.

Some very big fish actually left the water, its allways the same when you have no camera.

So who is up for this visit to flyfishers paradise?

As Cranfield said we have plenty of tackle between us so if you have ever wanted to have a go nows your chance, I will stay with you and give you some guidance.

    :hmm: D2D

  23. D2D is looking into it, it is looking like 10/11th is that too soon?

Other than that, for me at least, it would have to be June and that filling up rapidly . .

If the end of May works for everyone else, go for that and I will catch with you next time :sly:

Morning all, I have spoken to the fishery and SATURDAY 10th MAY is ok, if we turn up with 10 bodies there is a bottle of scotch for the sweepstake.

Day ticket is £26, catch up to ten retain them in the crate and select the four best fish to take home with you at the end of the day.

Please pm me if you want to be included and I will give you finalised plan later on, will be an excellent day out in good surroundings, comfortable restroom for the wimps if we have a late April shower ???

Look forward to meeting a few more of you,

    D2D

I will be away for a day or two if anyone needs further info on the jolly please contact Cranfield, I will visit the fishery on Tuesday to make 100% sure that it will be up to the demanding standards expected by our PW Flyfishing experts ??? Also to take a sneaky look at the bottle of Scotch ???

The weekend is forcast to be warm and sunny so Im off down to sussex in the caravan for the first trip this year, enjoy your weekend.

Sorry you cant make it to the gathering Martin, maybe next time?
