  1. Hi guys does anyone have one of these Night Vision Sights, they look very impressive if a little expensive.

am saving for one and hope to get one after new yrs.

If anyone has one would appreciate a quick review

    Many thanks

oh and a happy Christmas to you all. good hunting

Hi if mods dont mind, take a look on BBS NV sect, they have had major discussions on the new Yukon Digi Pulsar.

even though the price seems attactive its still only gen1 and suffers the dreaded Digi pause, may only be a milisecond but take a shot at any range and what you saw quite simply is no longer the case when the round strikes.

Digital NV is fine for spotting but not as a rifle sight.

    Cheers Rob.

  2. wife said chickens were acting odd yesterday, didnt go into shed at normal time and squaking

got home last night, and discovered a stoat in the trap again!, nearly one year on to the day that a stoat slaughtered 6 of them last year.

i had started setting the trap again about 4 weeks ago with an egg as bait

another stoat tail for making fishing flies!

it didnt half stink too, scent.

    dispatched with .22 airgun,

both times stoats have been caught in the catch-alive trap, and avoid the fen trap in a wooden tunnel

Ive not tried this but have been told that if you can spray the trap from above with the wee from a freshly killed stoat, as you would wee a rabbit, then any remaining stoats are quite keen to join the party.

Good luck and hope you dont lose anymore.

    Rgds Rob.

  3. I don't think they let too much out, but I am not a fan.

The deer just pull the springs straight and hoover the grain out.

We are replacing all of ours with metal letter boxes.

Hi Mung, obviously the reasoning behind hopper feeding is to feed the birds but without them gorging quickly and #### off to the next parish, maybe the ones I am using differ to yours, I cannot imagine deer being able to pull mine out of the hole at the bottom of the drum, its far too tight a fit.

What sort of season are you having? We have extraordinary numbers of Woodcock and yet its not been that cold, so far.

    Rgds Rob.

  4. Another 5 hour day and **** all should i keep going or leave it a few weeks for the pigeons to come of the berries ? :good:

    Cheers

You have my sympathy, been there and stopped doing it. Just be ready to move when a hard frost is forcast together with a fine sunny morning, they will be hungry for the first few hours and descend on the nearest available rape.

Get your permission/possible hide positions sorted then wait, as said do your recces, time is never wasted just cruising and looking through the bins.

    Good luck, Rob.

  5. i dare not leave anything lying around, the owner of my permission keeps highland cattle, he'd string me up if he found any cases or plastic wads on his land.

ther's no excuse for it, like someone here has already said, " they weigh far less on the way back than on the way there"!

I too am against any form of litter left laying around the countryside, I have friends who all farm and shoot, they all allow me free range of their land which they regard as their garden, I would feel that I would be letting them down by littering.

One thing is noticable in all the preceding posts no one until now has mentioned plastic wads, these should be banned except for use on licenced clay shooting grounds, they are not degradable and like the cases will lay around for years, in my opinion they are more dangerous than the cases which have at least a metal part to put animals off swallowing them.

It will not be long before an act is passed to restrict their use.

Off topic I know but have to mention my other pet hate and that is these mass releases of gas filled balloons into the air, where do they land? Do the people releasing them care, do they #####. Often these are released on some charitable pretense, many end up caught in the upper branches of trees and remain there for months others in the hay crop, baled up for animals to choke on.

    Rgds Rob.

  6. The g'friend has told me that we HAVE to have a holiday next year, we both fancy a week on a narrow boat, I went on 3 with my folks when I was a lad and they where the best holidays I ever had.

Any thoughts on which canals to do , does anyone have one that they hire out ?

Hi I have in my time had 3 narrowboats in the Northampton area, Braunston is recognised as being the crossroads of the canal system, from there you can travel anywhere you please, down to London if you are feeling brave leading onto the tidal Thames.

The Coventry canal is not too arduous with just a few locks and miles of beautiful open countryside, beware the Bingley flight of locks they will take your breath away this is a vast feat of engineering, and will take half a day to navigate, then you have to return down them as a week will not allow you to do a ring unless you are a crew of fit lads?

The Oxford canal will take you through a few more locks and interesting swing bridges, I would advise you to buy a copy of the Nicholsons guide to cover your chosen route, it will give you details of your proposed holiday including mileages, bridge numbers for positioning, shops and villages you will pass through, together with an idea of how many locks before you reach the pub!!

Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions, be glad to help, have a good holiday.

    Rgds Rob.

  7. Morning lads, told today that we have had 11" of rain in November compared with the normal 7", no wonder my legs ache from carrying everything around instead of using the Landy lol.

Anyone found that these spiral spring feeders let out too much grain? I have inserted a 6" x 1"dia bit of stick into the bore of the spring, this has reduced the "flow" the birds still get the grain by pecking as normal, but it just takes that bit longer and prevents too much pouring out at one hit.

    Cheers Rob.

  8. Don't agree, My expirance (?) teds to be a hitler style warden or an ex army major.

I know some fantasic sites down this way privately owned that out do any caravan club site for there freindly, safe sites and build with the faimly in mind.

All I can say is that you have either been very unfortunate or have not been to many Caravan Club sites, in 30 yrs of holidaying in both Motorhomes and Caravans I can remember only two such wardens, with "attitude", as I said they just need a gentle reminder as to who they are actually working for.

There are very many excellent privately managed sites but the standard of Caravan Club sites is the same wherever you stay, its not a case of pot luck as to whether its a good site or not. They also work out on average to be cheaper than commercial sites I have found.

  9. 2.5tdi Audi A6 a great car alround and towing.

I used to find the caravan club sites a bit stuck up and very regimental, everybody has to park the same way or you will get the rath of other members or the site wardens.

Caravan club sites are without doubt the cleanest, safest, (especially for kids), places to stay. The wardens are on site to not only help members and service the site facilities but to maintain the peace and quiet we all enjoy, dogs are welcome and have a separate exercise area.

The pitches are laid out to ensure that everyone has ample space around them, the art is in choosing a pitch away from trees, so that the awning faces south , with the evening sun, if any lol,is on the lounge area of the caravan.

It is true that there are a few, and only a few, wardens (usually temps covering regular wardens holidays) that take the job too seriously, my approach is to gently remind them that I am the member and it is my club he works for. After reflection they usually see where I am coming from.

    Happy Caravanning. D2D.

  10. To avoid confusion, this battery belongs to me, but is to be collected from Evenswood, Bishop Auckland.

I bought it together with a Lightforce lamp, the lamp is being posted, but it is uneconomical to post the battery, therefore I am offering a 20amp 12v battery to the first person who paypals me a nominal Tenner which offsets the postage of the lamp.

A bargain I think and perfect for a Pigeon rotary, only downside is that the lady works shifts and the buyer would have to call at a time convenient to her.

PM please if you are able to collect from that area.

    Rgds D2D.

    BATTERY COLLECTED THANKS.

  11. Chaps I have available for collection in Bishops Auckland a 20amp 12v battery, I bought it with a lamp on the bay but its too heavy to post.

I,m asking just a Tenner for it (via paypal) this will offset the postage of the lamp to me.

Ideal for a Pigeon Rotary, pm me for further details, but be quick as its on other forums.

    Cheers D2D.

  12. Then you have tax, insurance and mot to fork out for as well as your family or work car.

I think you get a discount on some sights if your a member of the caravan club :good:

The caravan club have a large network of member owned sites throughout the uk and many more are affiliated abroad, they charge an average £15 for 2 adults, van, car and awning and that includes unlimited electricity, most sites have a 5 star shower block.

Anyone who is serious about Caravanning should look into the benefits, especially if going abroad.

  13. Basically guys I have never towed a caravan before and have only towed trailers using transit vans. I am looking at buying myself a nice sized 6 berth touring caravan but i seriously doubt by Peugeot 406 2.0 hdi 90bhp with 260k miles today ( happy birthday Paris the Peugeot ) is up to the task. So i need to know what type of vehicle is up to the task.

Now for the awkward part, i'm not a fan of oversized cars if not completely necessary. So the things i am looking for are.

    1. Comfort

    2. Diesel

    3. Enough space for wife and 2 kids

    4. Same sort of size as my 406 if at all possible.

    5. Good mpg

    6. Under £3k

    Am i asking miracles?

Hi have a look on the Caravan Club website they have all the info you need, well worth joining either them or Camping and Caravan club GB.

You dont put your age on your profile but that plays a part these days regarding what you can tow.

I have been caravanning for years now and we have really enjoyed our holidays and long weekends away for comparatively little money, once you have bought all the bits and bobs.

Then theres the added joy of holding up all the traffic on a Friday afternoon :good::)

We also had a Camper, Swift Kontiki, until we got the caravan, we got rid of it because we were fed up with having to spend most of the visit to towns looking for suitable parking to take a long vehicle and so many carparks had height restrictions, they are not as free and easy as you think, nowadays we park the caravan on site put up the awning and off down the local. If you want to do that with a Camper you have to pack everything away before you can leave, unless you fancy getting on your bike!

  14. Reason for wanting/using a FAC shotgun, - Crop Protection. That's what my FEO advised me to write down, and I got the variation with no problems.

The Escort magnum is a brilliant FAC shotgun. Mine is an 8 shot. See it in action on YouTube (Escort magnum 8 shot)

Hi Steve is the Escort still behaving perfectly, I have sold my sect1 and thinking of filling the slot with an Escort x8, has yours missed a beat yet?

    Cheers D2D

  15. goats milk is fine

The 2nd finest milk there is for growing pups, find someone with goats they usually have more milk than they know what to do with and have it already frozen, buy up all you can store and you wont go far wrong, pups on goats milk grow before your very eyes lol.

  16. I have a six month old cocker spaniel which is progressing well with training. He sits, and stays, retrieves fairly well and recalls when I am in the garden. He is not always so obedient on walks although I remain calm with him and correct his mistakes. However he will not walk to heel. I have tried popping his lead, encouraging him to walk at my side with treats and also turning 180 degrees on a walk when he pulls as well as just stopping when he pulls. Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks for any help.

A method I have used many times with a problem dog is to walk the dog on a lead up a quiet lane with high banks or a field with a solid hedge, the dog walks as normal on your left with its nose just level with your knee, the lead is in your left hand, in your right hand you carry a swishy thin wand devoid of leaves etc, except for a few on the very end, a "swisher," the idea is not to touch the dog at all but to move the swisher up and down gently in time with your walking speed. the dog will have to put its nose into the swishing leaves or stay at heel, should it move forward and make contact with the stick a firm "NO"is given but lots of praise every 20yds or so, after a few sessions the dog will not seek to move ahead and will be content to stay by your knee, within a week it will not need to be on a lead, very soon the swisher is dispensed with and the dog, unless it is stupid, will have the lesson learnt.

You can progress to what I call "square bashing" walking the dog, again with a swisher in 10yd squares, first one way, then the other start the lesson on the lead and finish off the lead, always finish the lesson on a successfull note with bags of praise, put the dog back in its kennel happy. As with any training session if things dont go right, switch to something the dog can do, give it lots of praise and call it a day.

Hope this helps in some way,

  17. yes it wont be offerd again and if it ever is those "neandertals" need not bother me again

people through their own goodness offer help for some which could be the chance of a lifetime and rudeness spoils it and yet there are pages of "people wanting shooting", well after some of the reply's i have had they desreve to sit in armchairs

It really is a shame when offers like this come along, I do a fair bit of shooting but would sometimes like to have a change of scenery, what has gone so wrong that the shooting cannot be offered again, possibly with a no pm,s ruling, then the "neandertals" as you call them would have to go public?

We could all then see who the twerps are and what they are up to, are they genuine members even? :hmm:

Should we all miss out just through the attitudes of a minority, it would be nice to think we are not all tarred with the same brush.

  18. Im about 10 miles away and yes we have it here quite badly, just have to wait for a couple of hard frosts, then hey ho off we go again ;)

In some areas the bunnies seem to have develped an immunity to it, but sadly not where we are, it has to rank as one of mans cruellest interventions but at the time I suppose the situation was getting out of hand.

In the early 60,s I went out as a lad after school with a webley mk3 and shot so many that we didnt have enough holes to put them in out of the way.

  19. Does anybody recommend rangefinders for air-rifle or FAC air-rifle or .22 rimfire ?

Are they worth using on these relatively short distances, invaluable or a gimmick ?

Anybody got any views on the JSR £90 one ?

I use a Bushnell Yardage Pro,dead easy to use, no whistles or bells just a straight forward good bit of kit, I use it alot zeroing and for checking/setting up bait sites for charles

things have a habit of looking closer in the dark and its good to know the range in advance, so yes very worthwhile having and this one wont break the bank.

  20. Most of the eye colours are the same - some bright some dull ( but then again sheep eyes have a blue tinge to them)

The easiest way to identify them is by how far apart they eyes are apart

And i agree with the others the "Poll" makes absolutely no sense what so ever

Not wishing to diss you in anyway MM. but if you can see just how far apart a pair of eyes are at 300yds, your a far better man than the rest of us.

Having foolishly read every contribution to this thread I am still no closer to what the "eck he,s on about.

One thing is certain though, and that is that no one shoots at a pair of eyes .... ever.

    DOOOOH  D2D

  21. Hi chaps I have a Deben Blue Eye sealed beam that I am going to drop into a Tracer Max housing, can anyone tell me what the wattage of the Blue Eye is and will it take kindly to being dimmed?

The previous halogen bulb fitted to this lamp was 55watt and I,m trying to up the wattage, the dimmer is the Lightforce 100watt.

    Rgds D2D.

  22. By chance i found a rather good backstop last night. I've got building work going on at home and decided to take a thermalite block as you can pin a target on easily. We're using the big blocks that are 210mm thick and blow me if they don't nicely stop a .223 round at 100 yards. I'll cut it open later and see how far it went but with it being aerated and soft you shouldn't get a ricochet and it absorbs the energy brilliantly

Wooah dont go there, I made up a "cupboard" type of structure with new thermalite blocks and used it with a target enclosed for zeroing my .22, I used subs at 50yds, they quickly chewed a hole right through and started going through the hole after only a few sessions, so check the blocks everytime you go to use them as backstop.

Mine were 4" thick but the only difference will be the time it takes to reduce the block to a crumble.
