  1. I`ve been shooting alot of "paper" this week as instructed by PW members, 100 yds-130 yds-160 yds 200yds. So feeling confident of i went last night, first field had a look with the lamp, nothing. So i turned off the lamp and using my very inexpensive but highly effective "palm of my hand" fox caller i squeeked for a minute. Lamp back on and heres a fox 100 yds away, i turned off the lamp and put up my home made tripod , lamp back on and the fox is now 20 yds away. I appologise to those of you who instructed me to only take chest shots but it was sat in a tractor rut so all i could see was its head, in through the eye and out with all grey matter through the back of its head. Good shooting tell us more about your home made tripod please.

  2. Chris,

Just out of interest what do you reckon is the best / most accurate semi auto .22?

Like Flash (I think) I have some shopping to do in the not so distant future.

    M

Ive had an Anschutz 525 for over 10yrs now and shot thousands of rounds through it, it has never jammed, likes eley subs but hates remington yellowjackets cant group/wont group!

Lightly oil the action and never clean the barrel (Eley subs are self lub and dont appear to leave crud)...... its the ideal tool for close range, sub 75yd nightime bunny bashing with a Pecar 4x86. Accuracy over 75yds is not that hot but then that range at night is enough for bunnies from a vehicle on my patch.

  3. Have you noticed the Acorns have developed early the Oaks are smothered in them in our fields already, still small but very early, the old timers used to reckon that it was the sign of a hard winter to come but these days who knows for sure whats in store.

One thing you can count on though is that if they crop earlier and are gone it will affect the pigeon shooting later when they traditionally should be feeding on the acorns.

  4. The use of bad language, or mock bad language, is prohibited.

Ya got caught, suck it up and stop whining. Even words have been edited out of my posts, I don't go on a crusade about it :D

Since when has the word "whore" been considered bad language, lighten up and get a life. :look:

  5. Hi all, several posts recently, mine included have been modded and words deleted also replies have been deleted.

When I fist joined PW it was the custom of the mods to insert a "post edited by......." this no longer appears to be happening and when you check your post for replies next morning its been anonymously modded.

Dr W had replied to my ad for oars last night but hey presto this morning his post has disappeared I understand that your not supposed to post comments on buy swap, wanted posts but his post was similar to this and critical of the way my original whores wanted post had been "cleansed"

Maybe I am mod bashing but lets have a level playing field and some explanation for the unjustified interference.

What are your feelings on anonymous modding? ;)

And please no smarta*sed answers saying if you dont like it etc from the "few" and yes Im still brassed off!!

  6. We had the tour de france past our drive recently and a group of young people in a car were following behind the event gleefully hoovering up the plastic yellow roadsigns advertising the event, we asked them why they wanted so many and you guessed it .... Fleabay. Good luck to ,em.

  7. Hi guys,

I'm a bit new to things here so I can only speak to how we used to hunt rabbits in the states. For us, most of the rabbit hunting was jump shooting, i.e. 1-5 guys walk in a line through some rabbit containing brush/brambles/etc. When the rabbits flush you snap shoot. For the most part, shots were 30 yd or less, sometimes as short as 15' (if you were quick). Sometimes we would have beages with us that would trail the rabbits that we didn't get shooting at. Normally the rabbits would run a wide circle to come back where they were jumped from. Once the dog was on a bunny, the shooters just stayed put and waited until the rabbit came back around.

For that type of hunting, we normally used 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 oz 3 3/4 dram loads (high brass) in either 6's or 7.5 shot. I understand that shot sizes run a little smaller here for the same numerical designation (i.e. UK #5 is closer to US #6). So by my estimations #6 UK would be about #7 US. For what we hunted that would be about perfect size shot for pattern and penetration. Rabbits aren't tough to kill by any stretch. Their skin is rather thin and their muscle fairly soft. I've used US #8 shot on them, but that was for closer range open shooting (ragweed and open woods) with open chokes (cylinder) to keep the pattern density up at range. It works just fine close, but I wouldn't use that size shot past 25 yd or so.

    Thanks,

    Rick

Shouldnt that read using some choke to keep the pattern density up at range, I agree that using an open choke at very short range will allow the pattern to develop quickly, but am puzzled by the words "at range",

I would disagree that its ok to use such light loads at any range for rabbit even at 20yds especially with an open choke. ;)

  8. If there are any Racing Pigeon men amongst us.......

I am after some gay pied birds.

Performance is not important as I want them for their colouration to pair back to my white buschaerts.......(trying to develope my own white lines)

so if there are any of this years birds that havnt quiet made the grade....or indeed there are any old stock kickign about....I would be pleased to hear from you....

    cheers

    Paul

Are you allowed to describe them as "Gay" the mods will be along in a minute ;) :look:

  9. Hi sorry about that couldnt resist it,

Has anyone preferably in Kent or East Sussex got a pair of wooden oars they no longer need?

Anything will do tatty or in need of repair.

    Many thanks.

Hi in case your wondering about the opening line.... the mods appear to be altering and deleting posts without any notes or explanation, in fact Im a bit brassed about it......... all the opening line said was "Whores Wanted" what on earth is wrong with a little frivolity, I usually support the need for modding but this is silly to just keep cutting the post about .

Even the replies have been deleted, all I want is a pair of old oars. :P

    :o D2D

  10. Right.. first of all no bullet is affected by ANY wind because no wind could actually blow a bullet off course.

A bullet spins as it travels through the air causing a layer of air to cling to it. If the bullet is spinning in a clockwise direction then the way the wind works is thus-

The bullet is spinning clockwise and is acting in the same way as an aeroplane wind; this is why a spinning bullet will travel further and with more stability.

So any wind coming in from the right will cause it to generate low pressure on the top of the bullet and high pressure on the bottom. This will cause the bullet to climb high and left.

A wind coming from the left will generate high pressure on the top and low pressure on the bottom and will cause the bullet to clime down and right.

This is why you will see targets that are shot in gusty wind showing a group that spreads from 10.00 o‘clock to 4.00 o’clock across the bull.

A faster spinning bullet creates more pressure and therefore moves more in the wind than a slower spinning bullet.

So a fast bullet with a slow twist will move less than a slow bullet with a fast twist. Whereas a fast bullet with a fast twist will also move more than a slow bullet with a slow twist.

I’m going to lie down now as I have a headache.

    G.M.

That explains the occassional and bl**dy annoying miss on dark and very windy nights, I compd for the windage but not the climb/drop. Interesting I had put it down to eyesight and age, ta for that. :o :P

  11. I have gone for Section 1 shotgun, .22RF with mod and .223 centrefire with mod.

I have asked for maximum ammo allowances etc.

My own view is if I get 1/3 of what I have asked for then that will do me.

I would be intrigued if there was a land restriction or otherwise on the shotty.

    We shall see.

From what I have learnt on here it's a numbers game - if you ask and don't get, then be grateful for what you do get, give it 6 months of clean shooting and then ask again.

Bit of a trudge but there we go...

I have two section 1 12g and there are no land restrictions, mind you I had them before the rules were tightened up.

If you use it for pigeon control/crop protection and state that as your reason for having having it then they cant really put any

    geographical limits on the use.

As you say if you dont ask you wont get... good luck.

  13. D2D, if you don't get any takers I can bring a few and hit it hard later in the year.

I am hoping that you will be able to forge a relationship with someone nearer to you though.

    LB

Hi LB so far only a lad from margate has shown interest and he says he has never been before, what would be good is if you could come along as well as the ground is very accesslble but alot of it to net up even with 3 of us.

The landowner is keen to get the numbers down asap, weather permitting how about 1st wk nov?

    D2D

  14. Got my 17.hmr for close range foxes aswell as rabbits, i reapplied 6 months later and have a .223 aswell.

Me being a gamekeeper sped that all along a bit.

    Alex

Just out of interest, which do you prefer and which gets the most practical use? For example, I could see how people would "prefer" using a .223 as a much better tool for many diferent jobs, but I would have thought that day to day a fully silenced .22 semi auto would be the one that would get the most use.

Hi Mungler, If I were you I would forget the CF for a while until you have gained some experience and go for a .22 semi, only downside is that they are not as accurate as a bolt over distance but deadly for night use on the bunnies, also its not so fiddly, as having to work a bolt each shot, with a 10 shot mag in the back of a truck. With a modded semi it is entirely possible to take out several rabbits quickly before they realise whats going on and all run for cover.

I have sometimes encountered a fox while out rabbiting and an advantage with the semi is that you can squeeze off another shot in the blink of an eye to be sure. but I would not advise taking long shots with a semi. This is why Im now looking for a good bolt action.

Hope this makes sense and helps you in your decision.

  15. Hey chaps

How long roughly does a varation take to go through?

Sent my form and cash off, how long shall I expect to wait, whats involved?

    Cheers

    Jon

Sent mine off 1/7 got it back 13/8 not so bad, but almost ran out of ammo despite stocking up before sending it off.

Certainly something to think about before sending.

  16. First they were given the vote.....

Then they were allowed on the roads and then more were seen on bikes......

NOW they are following us in the fields......

I ask you wheres all this leading to......?? B)

Head is WELL below the parapet :lol::lol:

Only joking, good for the sport, very welcome and the more the merrier

Yup, female AND a better shot than a lot of men i know (includng my other half) -

Seriously though, thanks for the input guys, think i just need to get out there and try it

Mrs D2D who bless her thought she would have a go, SO when we were at a game fair a few years ago I said have a go with that pointing to a stand firing at single clays, she took up her position and mounted, pulled..... it knocked her back a foot or two but when the smoke cleared she still had a big grin on her face cos she had done it...... told her later it was an 8 bore, tee hee. :P

  17. People just getting spooked? Let's hope so.

They are certainly taking it seriously, its too close for comfort I know the farm well and have shot pigeon on land up to a mile away from it.

If its confirmed it will be a disaster for some of the marsh sheep farmers who havnt recovered fully from the restrictions on stock movements from last time.

All we can do is keep away and hope for the best. I wonder about the wisdom of allowing caravaners on the CLs that some farms run, after all most caravans travel quite some distance across the country often from one farm certified location to another and could possibly carry the disease.
