  1. As the title says, time to trade in my 3 gun safe for something bigger... Giving my 3 gun safe to a friend so I can grow my collection. Will consider anything within 20ish miles of Surrey. Edit: Locking top would be a bonus. Thanks
  2. Reporting back: Just breasted a brace after hanging overnight with the new carbon steel Mora. Very pleased, like a warm knife through butter, infinitely better than the 'sharp' kitchen knife I've been using till now. Extra note: I've been using the quick method to prep my pheasants for a couple of weeks now and can't see going back to the old method unless my back gives out.
  3. All the guys I shoot with wear Le Chameau, everyeone hates Hunters but I've got a pair of hunters from about 6 years ago which are proper rugged and are still in good nick which I wear for every shoot. I've actually heard good things about the cheapos, such as Dunlop etc. Edit: Check out Decathlon's range, I've been impressed by all their stuff I've tried so far.
  4. Bought the Mora Carbon Steel Companion knife in olive
  5. As the title says, just looking for a good value (<£20?) knife for breasting pheasants. Been using a sharpish kitchen knife but assuming there's a better option. Any recommendations? Cheers,
  6. Bought some last week, haven't had a chance to field test them yet (will on Saturday) - but trotting round the house and mounting my gun seems to be no problem 👍
  7. No car is infallible, consumer reports just tend to put Toyota at the top year after year along with Honda, Nissan etc in terms of reliability ... Some will be un/lucky - I'm sure someone out there owns a rangerover that's never gone wrong, equally someone out there has a Toyota that's been a dud since day dot.
  8. If you're worried about reliability I'll stick my neck out and suggest you avoid all modern Land Rovers. Can't go wrong with Japanese 4x4s.
  9. Jesus, we're turning into America where tipping is mandatory. If the tip is required to maintain salaries then add it on to the cost of the day so there's no confusion. I really resent being forced to tip but am happy to do so when someone deserves just that... a tip.
  10. Seconding Decathlon, their stuff is good and cheap. Got a nice pair of Gortex trousers for £30 and they seem nice and hard wearing. All unbranded but decent quality.
  11. I say this all the time too; when someone is stuffing chicken in their face and tell me they don't think shooting is ethical (this has happened quite a number of times now) I lay out the following scenario to them: If you had to be one of the following animals for a lifetime, which would you choose? A Pigeon: Over your lifetime you've got about a 90% chance of not being shot, if not more. You're free your entire life and can fly wherever you choose and do whatever the hell you want, eating whatever you want You can mate with whichever other pigeons you fancy when you fancy There is a 10% chance that one day you'll be flying along enjoying the sun and you'll be dead instantly because you've been shot. or a chicken raised for meat: You have a limited lifetime, you will be killed for food in your first 6 months of life. You are either caged or have a limited area in which to roam, your diet is controlled You have no choice in if or when you ever mate There is 100% chance you'll be killed in a slaughterhouse with no chance of freedom or survival Usually makes people think a bit. All the same arguments apply to wild game; deer, rabbits etc. Just to be clear I'm absolutely not throwing practical shotgun under the bus and do not in anyway think it should be banned or anything. I'm saying it occasionally attracts the wrong kind of person and we/they/as a community should self police to stop these kind of people getting guns. I do not believe everyone should have access to firearms.
  12. We should be capitalising on your first point. I read a very good article a few months ago about game meat (I think pheasant) being healthier and better for the environment than beef. (Off the top of my head) something like 30% more protein per pound, 10% of greenhouse gas production per pound and 1% of the water useage per pound of meat. BASC should be singing about that from the rooftops and getting some top chefs on the case for the telly-masses.
  13. Nah, I think we're alright, as bluesj said shooting is becoming more and more popular, BASC/NRA is getting stronger and larger membership. The Tories & the Lords protect shooting because a lot of them come from that sort of background. I was also buoyed watching MPs stand up and defend shooting in the Commons this year thanks to the joint effort against that stupid European weapon legislation. We need more BASC membership and a more vocal community, a touch of self-policing wouldn't hurt... The only thing that will upset this in my eyes is another mass-tragedy. I'm gonna get flak saying this but I reckon the 'practical shotgun' crowd are the biggest risk in this respect. It can attract the sort of 'SAS wannabe' kind of person who turns up in a black boiler suit with all the military gear, boxfed mags with buckshot in... I'm by no means saying that everyone into practical shotgun is a mass shooter in training, PS looks fun, I'd like to give it a go! I've just noticed that 1 in a 1000 is of the potentially unhinged variety and the kind of guns they can by are the most dangerous in my opinion; fast firing, heavy load, magazine fed shotguns. I saw a fella wearing head to toe camo, military knee/elbow pads, tactical gloves, assault vest... everything; I was thinking... If the Daily Mail got a glimpse of this guy running around with a deadly weapon the public will be on us in no time. Anyway, rant over. I think we're fine as long as there's not another tragedy, as tragedies seem to inspire knee-jerk reactions.
  14. I'm clearly mixing in the wrong circles, haha. Well that's encouraging to hear, definitely a strong contender then. Cheers!
  15. I may have to learn! I wasn't really planning on it immediately as I shoot rifles fairly rarely so don't mind paying over the odds on the odd occasion. Yeah I love the idea of this round, it's just so rare at the range it put me off a bit. The rifle I want; Tikka Tac also doesn't come in 6.5x55, though I know that shouldn't be a deciding factor. Ahh don't worry there, the scope I was planning on getting costs more than the rifle, a nice S&B for 1000+ shooting. I did wonder how practical this would be on the fox/deer side, so another consideration for me to mull over. Thanks for the advice.
  16. You make a very good point... I was careful to specify 1 centrefire rifle in the OP.. don't think the missus would be too happy me bringing home what's left of a rabbit for the pot after it's been hit with 140gr of 6.5 😅 I'm basically just going off what the guidelines say and they didn't mention 308 as being suitable for foxes, though I can't see why it wouldn't be seeing as it is comparable in energy and velocity. I guess I'll just have to give my FEO a ring and test the water.
  17. I'm thinking of going for only 1 centrefire rifle when I put in for my FAC in the new year. I shoot casually at Bisley so not looking for some weird target rifle, as well as wanting to shoot fox & deer on a perm I currently shotgun over. I'd assumed I'd probably need to get two rifles for this reason; a 308 for Bisley and something like a 243 for fox/deer, however... I was just reading through the homeoffice guidelines and noticed an interesting extract: This got me thinking, the 6.5 creedmoor is the reigning champion of long range target shooting so Bisley shooting is covered, then according to this I could use the round for fox & deer too, so I'm starting to think I may just get one rifle. Other consideration may be the 6.5x55? Am I being dense? Anyone got any experience with this? Cheers Edit - just to clarify I'm looking at getting only one centrefire rifle, I'll also put in for the obligatory 22lr.
  18. Thanks for this, mine appear genuine. Also, no problems mounting the gun, so hopefully these will last the season at least. Thanks all.
  19. Ahh this is something I should try, didn't get a gun out to test them. Will test this tonight 😞
  20. Mine turned up today, only tried them around the house but seem A+. At full volume you can hear someone rubbing their hands together, very menacing.
