  1. hi, i have recently seen a number of posts on different forums asking for details of vets that still dock pups legally. Does anyone know of such a list, do BASC or CA or any of the other organisations have a list of vets that dock pups given the right circumstances.... ATB
  2. think you will probably find that there were a lot of genuine calls in about it but some may have waited in a que to be answered and others may have waited until they spoke to someone else before making the decision to ring so the information coming in may be out by as much as 20 minutes...this would cause an absolute nightmare for officers at the communications room as one minute they could be being told he is at one location, then next he could be miles away.... best to wait and see now what comes out of any invsetigation before even thinking of aportioning a criticism like i say just terrible for those involved... atb GPs no...but phone cell siting is an option, trouble is it would have taken even longer to get his mobile number [if he had one] and then get the authorisation needed... having read the 'have your say' item the main thing that stood out is how unaware the public are as to what the laws are regarding firearms of any kind and their use and ownership. other than a united voice by organisations by BASC to counter what the media is already spinning, i think that all/any shooters can do their bit by trying to get into schools, primary and secondary to at least try to educate the childern with regards to firarms law and use. i think it is something that we shy away from which has the effect that the public have grown up with their own ideas of what is/isnt allowed or already happening. i do visit schools as part of my work remit and will bring this up with my local schools. knowing the staff, as long as it is an informative lesson [with no shock, horror, gore], and it ticks some of their boxes like english/discussion/reasoned argument etc, then they will allow it. this morning the main sense of action seemed to be store the ammo seperately...i can see a point to that as it may stop the instant decision/snapping whereby someone may decide to act in this manner. that said from what i have now heard this may have been a bit more planned than originally thought in which case it wouldnt have stopped a similar incident. also the practicalities of storing ammo at a police station or gun club puts a lot of the onus on any future incidents on them...can they police it/manage it in that people may need access to their ammo at any time of night/day and their nearest open facility may be 30 miles away and how will that play into it, ontop of the fact that once they have the ammo something might happen for that person to snap. again there was a large amount of public misconception, other than the normal killing/guns are a no no... yes they might tighten the criteria to possess a shotgun/rifle...and look at minor previous convictions in order to refuse a licence, i might be way off the mark but i would think a lot of responsible/upstanding members of the public and even MP's who like to shoot may also have previous drink drive offences or other similar convictions that at the moment doesnt stop their use or ownership but it may in the future if this is changed...i wonder how much backing it would get from those who may end up losing out because of it. we will have to wait and see in the long run....
  3. my thoughts are with the victims families and local community...sure it will take a long time to come to terms with it!! ATB
  4. Just looking to get set up for some earth work. Does anyone have an old/secondhand set that is still working and reliable? the lads who i grew up with never used them, but that was 25 years ago now, want to be on the safe side!! atb
  5. Kyska is right on this....and just to add a bit more into it...if s/he gets home before the police arrive then they have a power of entry to get the car, so if no one lets them in they can kick the door in to get to the keys/car to take it away!!! atb
  6. lol...what a great pressie!!! if you ever need a hand.... atb

  10. well...went and had another play today. Wind light, sun out, ground rock hard and unomfortable...layed out markers with a tape measure so distances quite accurate today. First 3 shots at 35 meters. ,so altered it till it was near zero.... A bit sloppy really but i was more interested in the 100/122 marks. So from this on i went out to 100 meters..., about 2" high and 2.2" left [poi was the lower right cross]. So i started to bring it back over... and then decided to try out to 122 meters. ..seemed a lot more like it with the height...i managed to bring the grouping over to the right [cant find the pic for that...] and did a couple of shots at 80m, by now i was begining to sweat with the walking back and forth and i was running out of time [always the case when i need to be relaxed..lol],back to 50m and this and finally back to 35m. then to tidy up and go... still it should have been zeroed at 122m but it is firing about 1" high [i can live with that]. i do think it is my firing of the rifle that is throwing it high and i hope with practice i can sort that. these shots were taken off my attached bipod/prone. It will need a clean now and i will see if that affects the group, i may even try a diffeent ammo to see if it tightens anything up but want to sort my firing first....someone has mentioned their HMR produced results like this with 17's ammo...20's produced much improved groups. i may now try a different 17 ammo and get a box of 20's too. thanks
  11. hi, can anyone enlighten me...i have the nighteye 6.5-20x50 on my CZ Varmint. i am using some high mounts and there is 5mm clearance between the scope and barrel. i think these mounts are 23mm high. the distance between bore and scope centre is about 2" and i would like to try to reduce it. trouble is all the medium mounts i have found are too low, usually 3mm or so too low and the front of the scope hits the barrel before the body is settled in the mount cradle. does anyone know of any medium or high mounts that are about 18mm, that will lower my scope the require 5mm? atb
  12. our feo's wont do gun safes in lofts unless....there is me form of permanently attached ladder and lighting. otherwise the big bad H&S comes out and they arent insured for climbing free standing ladders etc.... worth checking with yours... ATB
  13. Got out this afternoon for a quick zero...it never seems an ideal time and the law of sod was doing its bit today as well...no sooner had i got my stuff together than it lashed down and the wind got up...lol I manufacutred a quick portable target stand out of an old metal coat hanger and took my newly made shooting sticks with us. my first two shots were at 35 yards....just a quick check to make sure it was nearly there. happy it was still shooting ok, i moved it out to 100 yards. i kept the magnification at 12x and fired 3 shots. i could just see them at the top of the target...i was aiming for the centre. that was the first grouping of three within 3/4" - i was happy with that! i also noted that using the mil dots it appeared to be the next one up from centre...so for the next 3 shots i used that mil dot and aimed for the centre of the target. these three shots were just over 3/4" [1/4" high and 1 1/2" left of centre] i then decided to move it out to 125 yards. [a zero at 36 yards should also give a second zero at 122 yards if the calculator is right, but in my past tests it didn't seem to be that way] i got back to the rifle to find i had set the target too low to the ground, i couldnt see the bottom edge due to the grass, but i couldnt be bothered to walk out and lift it so i made do.....i fired off a few rounds [the 1 and 2 shot above and below the middle 3] before switching to 20x mag. i then aimed the next 2 shots again using the 1st mil dot at a point centre high where the blue ring meets the white , the grouping was only just over 1/4", it was about 1/4" low though. that was it for me though and i was happy with that...it was still 3" high at 125 yards which i thought strange but will see what happens when i get a good day to test it. Throughout this the wind was blowing directly from behind me [may be why the round was so high at 122yards?], it was strong and gusting so i think my new rest will do. I may remove the rubber and replace it with some thin leather just to cushion the rifle. the rubber did stop you adjusting it easily as it really gripped it too tightly. anyway hope this makes sense....any comment welcomed....
  14. jko...lol not sure if that is a dig or not, or whether my comment hasnt come across well... i am a BASC member but am voicing my concerns of a move away from lead...towards something that may be more harmful [steel], and the harm to our [shooting] reputation by agreeing to move away from lead, towards a possibly more harmful, less effective material? when there may be more studies needed to show exacty how harmful lead is to humans/animals etc... i have no doubt that an animal shot with lead my suffer a slow and poisoning death...but then again an animal shot with steel may suffer as bad a death through other metal poisoning....but in both examples, as shooters, i would suggest neither is a wanted solution as everyone would prefer a clean humane kill? its got to be a balanced argument and perhaps more studies are needed to get that info....until we have that evidence why change, thats all i am saying... gotta say i am happy with BASC so far although i do share the same concerns as a lot on here about how hard things are being pushed for etc...but it is good that their representatives, like David are on sites like this and are accessible/available for comment. there arent many other organisations that offer that level of contactability for their members [again my own personal view and i could be wrong]
  15. ..it seems like the start of a slippery slope to me! if lead is bannnd we move to steel, i would suggest within months [especially if any anti's etc have been reading this thread alone] there will be a big push to ban steel as it is even worse than lead....it could also be pointed out that the shooting arean knew this and still went for steel - showing the antis and joe public that we have a blatant disregard for any welfare issues to the environment etc. i think the bodies responsible will have to think long and hard on this otherwise they could end up with egg on their face. i agree that no one would 'want' to drink eat poisoned stuff...but there seem to be more studies needed to find out if lead shot was banned how much of a difference would it make to the level of lead put into the food chain and then a decision can be made. why change something for something worse? the other thing would be to look at other metals less harmful, cheaper, still do the job and able to be made into shot/bullets etc. ATB
  16. Frenchie...i spoke to the FEO down here last year on this, he did say that 'they' like to see you going down the DSC1 route [unless there is some other experience/qualification that is relevant - i expect]. I have heard of people with small area's of land getting it agreed by suggesting the use of highseats to enable a better angle and therefore a safer backstop... if you are going for it put it down for fox/deer, that way you will/should get it but there may be a DSC1/mentoring condition put on for deer - at least you can go out and practice/get used to the rifle on the foxes whilst you get the deer conditions sorted. i dont think there would be a 'number of deer on the land' issue as most deer move about, so there is a good chance that deer will pass over your land, especially up where you are! if you get it and need a deer dragger let me know!!!! ATB and good luck...keep us informed

Hi, not sure as to the streaming process but the school gets good/oustanding ofstead and is the main one in a very afluent area although there are some from poorer families there [that was an eye opener there as i would dread to think what an inner city school figures would be] the problem here [perhaps like many places] as i see it is there is very little for youths to do easily [without needing lifts/lots of money/suitable for them etc - that said i was brought up in a tiny village with nothing to do but use your imagination with play/sport/farmwork] and often the well to do parents having had a hard week at work dont really want their children in clutterring the place while they relax so they get sent out [sometimes with copious amounts of alcohol] to do as they wish....so they do! a lot of the kids will tell you they 'get off their heads' as there isnt anything else to do...
  18. try a tescos £12 2C led torch....better than the stinger [i have one as well], use it on my rimfire.....still on the first set of batteries but not seen a lot of regular use.
  19. sorry but that comment from the Police seems to be absolute ****.....just 'cos someone is there with the dogs does not mean they are under control!!! they would be subject ot the same laws as anyone else and if the dogs were out of control they could be dealt with just the same.... as Frenchieboy has also said, i follow hunts when i get the chance [more so when younger] but shooting/terrier work is more my thing i like to think i am supportive of all fieldsports but incidents like this and the one mentioned at the beginning of the post cast all fieldsports in a dark light.... by the sounds of it this particular hunt may have a PR problem.....[to be polite] ATB
