  5. Returned today and set a snare at that run.....less than 2 hours later the farmer was onto me well chuffed as his daughter, walking her dog came across this snare with Charlie inside! will pop down tomorrow to see if there is any sign of the vixen, or that the run may still be being used... atb
  6. A trip down to the farm with Bill yesterday... the ducks were enjoying the day when we arrived.... through the yard to the fields... Bill soon starts to take note of scents and sounds... take off speed... fox signs, some scat scraping and a run through.... Bill had a good look around inside... landing gear down... the sheep seeking shade, where the foxes tend to come through... a good walk, not much about for Bill unfortunately.
  7. sometimes the bulet can be deformed on loading from a magazine which may have caused your problem. think it is a fairly easy fix...sure someone with a bit more knowledge will be able to explain and give advice. at least you know it isnt the gun now it shoots manually loaded rounds ok... atb
  8. gotta say i am not against hiding stuff like this away, i think that may mean it is more of a shock when it is occasionally seen. if somehow things like this [and other fieldsoprts stuff] could be shown to the general public in a respectful light it may mean less knee jerk reaction when you come to the hard decisions as seeing a dead animal wont necessarily mean a 'cruel' death etc... it goes for all fieldsports not just the badger thing at the moment. the more we can promote the respecful sight of dead animals the better i think... atb
  9. cheers Phil, Great to meet you and the family!! thanks for a really good shottie as well! A sound bloke and very easy to deal with should anyone else have any business with him! atb Ewan

  12. As has been said if you want to make sure of the recall stop it going after rabbits until the recall has been perfected. think there are a few threads on recall training on here, just find what works for you and your dog... Good luck with it.... atb

  16. shoot the vixen and the cubs will hang about wondering what has gone on, usually they will come to her to allow you to shoot them. Shoot a cub and the vixen will just up and move the rest asap... very basically. atb

  20. Agree wit hyou Catweazle...that is what i used to do with our Akitas. Our remaining Akita is 11 now and havent needed to do this for years [so long i cant remember]...he's an old boy now but in his adolescence and early adult hood he needed reminding sometimes. Only recently has he started to show aggression to other dogs and i think that is something to do with the onset of dimentia - he is afraid of most things now relating to noise, binmen, children playing, wind, snow flakes floating in the air etc... that said the terrier i now have has been even more of a challenge, at least the Akita seemed to learn from his mistakes and alter his behaviour reasonably quickly. the terrier is always looking to dominate/get the upper hand and so always have to keep on top of him. he doesnt need a strong hand so to speak, just a firm one....knowing him too much force would result in a spoilt dog, not enough and he would not consider you boss and just do his own thing. i wouldnt change him as it is this tennacity i want in a hunting terrier. it is all about knowing your dogs and not acting in anger no matter how much you are wound up... atb
  21. My force told me they would be happy with a couple of outings...whether fox/deer or paper punching...especially when i told them myself and my mentor had been shooting together for a couple of years now off and on... atb
