Got out yesterday 3 guns and 2 dogs. WE WERE AFTER SNIPE AND WOODCOCK. Had a great few hours working the dog and managed to raise about 12 woodcock, and a few snipe. We never even got a shot at the snipe they always seemed to get out and away from us.

Of the 12 'cock we only got to shot at 3 and 1 was downed. They were very easily spooked, although the ground we shot on would not be hunted that often. We should have known what to expect when the very first 'cock broke cover while we were only walking to the area of xmas trees we were going to hunt.

But it was nice to be out, no rain, good craic and a bit of exercise, oh and woodcock for tea tonite.

This is part of the beauty of shooting woodcock, you never know when they are going to rise and for this reason you must always be ready. Well done. We are out on the pheasants tomorrow.

I've always wanted to try woodcock. My mate shot one when we did a spot of rough shooting last year (I had the mallard). When he was telling someone about it, he was told it wasn't really on (?) as they have quite a hard journey from Scandinavia. Any reason why some folk frown on shooting Woodcock?

i dont frown upon it but i dont shoot them either, nice to see them flying about.

  • 3 weeks later...

Got out today to walk a bit of the Ulster canal, there were three of us but only one dog as my springer is in season and has been mated with the dog we had with us.

In the first field the dog was on the scent of something and was gettin very excited, then suddenly a woodcock broke cover, bang, curse by shooter, dog still very excited, ran about 20 yrds forward and then 3 woodcock broke cover away from all guns and thru the trees so no clean shots available. This was to be the theme of the day.

We easily raised 25 woodcock that we saw and I am sure there were a few good few more that we didn't see.We started about 10.30am and finished about 2.pm and had one woodcock to show for it, but it was a cold bright day and great to be out, missed having my dog with me. Might try to get out with her for an hour tomorro just to make it up to her :good:
