turk101
Hi guys & ladies went to do a bit of recce 2day & took a few photo's of the rape fields. I asked the other day why the field was cut in strips, but no one answered. maybe u did'nt understand what i meant.Today these fields of rape were full of woodies gonna go & try my luck on wednesday, even though there out in the middle but there was a nice flight line,so might try & ambush them a little further up field. Also at one of my other farms the rape has been cut to stubble but not a single bird around,is that right, seems odd to me. anyway finally some photo's sorry to be so long winded.... turk101 ps i'll post the photo's on the pictures page as don't know how to do it here.. Cranfield
When they want to harvest the rape, they either spray it to kill it, or swathe it. To swathe it, they cut it close to the ground and push it to one side, which looks like "rows". Pigeons like swathed ields, becaus the seed is available on the plant. On rape stubble, they are relying on spilt seed and there is usually quite a bit of that about. In my area, they are spraying, then harvesting and cultivating the field, almost in the same week. Topgunners
Hi! just my two penn'rth. I shot on exactly the same swathed rape field you are looking at ; on sunday afternoon and set up my decoys as follows. Magnet in the biggest gap i could find and then 16 deeks spread about on top of the rape and 4 "spreaders" at the front of the deeks. I shot 53 pigeons and they were dropping like stones from a great height straight into the pattern. Had 7 x "double-deckers" and a couple of high birds as well. Magic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lurcherboy
Turk, I had an hour or so fishing on a farm pond tonight and watched 1000's of Pigeons acting like Seagulls over the crop. No gun but I did catch two small black Tench. Anyone seen black ones before? LB
henry d
use full bodied deeks and place them on the rows of rape and they stand out really well.Good luck and take plenty of cartridges and a bucket of water to dip those hot barrels in
