sitsinhedges
I would like some thoughts on how to open up chokes on a fixed choke shotgun. I have heard of two possible methods so far which are either use an expanding reamer to get to the required size or shorten the length of the barrel by a small amount to take it back to where the choke is the required size. Any thoughts or other ideas

Gordon R
I have only done one myself - I opened up a 20 bore auto to true cylinder with a reamer. I don't think a reamer will give you a taper in the choke. You are really looking for a gradual taper. Unless you are going true cylinder - get a gunsmith to do it. It's cheap enough. If you make a mess, it will cost you.
Andy H
If the shotgun is not worth a lot do not even consider having multichokes fitted and forget shortening the barrels , Each increment of choke is only approx 5 thousanths of an inch between full-3/4 or 1/2 etc, the proper way is to pull a choke reamer through the barrels from the breech end to follow the centre of the bore and use precision measuring equipment to measure the results if you go in from the pointy end you cannot ensure that any metal removal will be concentric to the bore and that is what you want , I suggest you go onto the shotgunworld forum and do a search and follow their advice. wymberley
Hi, Before getting the GUNSMITH to do anything, have you patterned the gun to find out how it's actually shooting? If, say, it's bored 1/2 by full and you want 1/4 by 3/4, nominally, you'd take 10 thous from each barrel. However, if the gun was already shooting......., nuff said, I'm sure you've got my drift. Dave66
Have a look on the Brownells website http://www.brownells.com/ I purchased one of their Gilchrist reamers recently with handle and bushes and a bore measuring tool. Only done one gun so far, an AYA from Full and a half, to half and improved. Before you do anything you need to check the bores with a decent gauge to understand the chokes/barrels, then pattern it before removing any metal (as you cant put it back) Shortening barrels only works with a tapered choke. not a parallel choke Brownells have some .pdf files that you can download that explain things Cheers Dave
