My mate Mark Gilchrist from the sporting shooting mag invited me down to his permison to do a bit of Fallow stalking. On the way down i met up with another mate to chance a munty... i got mark up to come along as this would be our first muntac.. result.. less than 2 hours and 2 munjac in the bag. So after that we drove down to kent and got an early night... up bright and early next morning ariving at his grounds just after 6am... stalked a couple of fields but didnt see anything.. then about 150 yards away we saw a group of 5-6 fallow running accross the field... "quick get on your sticks" mark said.. they were not stopping so i shouted.. unlucky for this doe she had to stop and see what i was.. the 129 grain RWS (6.5x55) went her way.. neck shot :hmm: . Gralloched her and draged her up the hill and left the carcas under a bush to come back for later. We stalked the next field and prity much the same thing happend again this time a doe and a follower... but i just could not get stedy.. was shaking like a f**ing leaf!! :good: so i decided to leav them for another day. Walked back to the carcas and draged it back to the truck.. Mark said lets just look on the far top field... sure enough we glassed a massive fallow buck.. we stalked into him as he was laying down in the sun.. i got to 90 yards of him and he stood upp... on my sticks and now i had a serious case of buck feever!!!!!!! BANG clean misss! reloaded ... BANG... ANOTHER CLEAN MISSS!!!! ???:hmm: we looked for about 1 and a half hours but no hair and no blood and no sighn of mr buck... Mark then said to me "i dont meen to rub it in but i think he was a medal!" it was a Long drive back up to cheshire.. oh well.. he will be there another time. Thanks for reading.

Rifle used was my 6.5x55 tikka t3 hunter with a s&b scope and ase jet Z mod.

So you're happy to take a neck shot off sticks at 150 yards at a twitchy group of fallow who've paused momentarily whilst running across a field, but missed twice at a stag at 90 yards?

i am quite happy to take neck shots up to 150 yards with my rifle and amo i am using.. i am very confident in it. As mentioned i had a bad case of buck fever.. and i normaly only need 3-5 seconds to take a shot. What are you trying to get at? :good:

What am I trying to get at? Let me spell it out...

You took a neck shot at 150 yards off sticks:

1) that's a good distance for a neck shot

2) sticks aren't the most solid of shooting platforms

You then totally missed twice at 90 yards due to buck fever:

a) If you couldn't control the nerves/shakes then you shouldn't have taken the shot once, never mind twice

b ) Someone who is truly competent enough to consistently pull off neck shots at 150 yards off sticks shouldn't be missing twice at 90 yards.

If you look at that final point b ) in a slightly different way, you could say that that someone who missed twice at 90 yards (for whatever reason) shouldn't be attempting 150 yard neck shots :good:

"150 is a good dictance for a neck shot"? so what is your problem? and the sticks used were the quad pods which i find are very solid. theres no pleasing some people. As said befor i am happy taking neck shots to 150yards. The buck was a miss on my part.. pulling the shot/buck feever... watever ... i am sory i am only human.. i supose you never miss?

I menat "good distance" as in "long" not as in "acceptable" :good::lol:

I stand by what I said, if you're missing for whatever reason at 90 yards then you shouldn't be taking on head shots at 150 yds. A clean miss could have easily been a jawed deer.

You're half right - it is my dog, but it's not my bird - I was picking up when the picture was taken. And you're also right, the bird wasn't dead - but my purpose in being there was to do just that - retrieve any wounded birds and to dispatch them as soon as possible.

If you shoot enough of anything then you will wound and not kill an animal at some point - it is impossible to guarantee a clean kill 100% of the time.

However, we owe it to our quarry to do everything we can to ensure we minimise that risk. That includes things like having a dog(s) to pick runners or only shooting at birds in range etc. It also includes not taking high risk neck shots off sticks at 150 yards when the stalker can't shoot consistenly at half that distance... And in my opinion, two back to back misses at 90 yards is pretty darn inconsistent!!:good:

look. i know what you are saying BUT the two misses were not the norm for me.. im not saying i am a pro/fantastic shot but most of the time the bullet goes were i aim. I generaly am consistant enough to take shots of sticks up to 150ish yards. I have not yet taken a head shot and dont intend to.. If i need to i will only take neck shots. Anyway thanks for looking annd putting in your input.

I shoot with mubz and we practice on our range about 3 times a month, from 100 yards out to about 200 yards.

I can vouch from hours on the range that mubz is an excellent shot, not only can he shoot well but I know that he has great respect for the beast when out in the field.

The problem is there are too many haters who pick fault in any story that people take the care and time to put up.

Although everyone is entitled to their opinions sometimes their opinion is better kept to themselves to stop them looking like a pompous know it all t@~t to the rest of the interested viewers.

I find on here that the most negative comments come from people that do little or no shooting.

Don't be a hater!!

Good job Mo, next time take the scope cover off mate.hahah
