oneshotkiller
On the way back from work , pulled up to have a coffee and sandwich by a ploughed field where a cock phesant was walking across when WHUMP this blur of feathers and talons crashed on top of it then rolled it over . I think it was definatly a red kite , looking at its v shape tail feathers and i know their is a group of them nesting near my house , but WOW that was amazing to watch , i went over for a butchers and the damage was immense ! pegasus bridge
no, not at all, i shoot not too far from grantham and i have never seen one - i have seen the swarms of buzzards though. I have only seen red kites in wales , and along the m40 corridoor. i would like to see some locally, when you see them, you cant miss them! raymond
loads of kites where we live. they even take meat scraps from the garden. in the fields(32 acres)they will take voles & mice and maybe baby rabbits but have never seen them attack anything as big as a pheasant or even an adult rabbit unless they are already dead. i suppose anything is possible. rspb sites might be useful ? oneshotkiller
This was on the front of my local paper this morning http://www.granthamjournal.co.uk/news/Myst...over.5801966.jp
Chard
I'd be surprised if it was a Kite, they're mostly scavengers, though they will take small stuff. I'd be amazed if one had a pop at a live rabbit, but I suppose there are exceptrions to the rule. Red Kites away from mid-Wales are usually from introduced populations and I didn't think there were any reintroduction schemes round Grantham, though I might be out of date on that one. I know there are schemes in Bucks, Harewood House (Leeds), somewhere near Hull and somewhere in Scotland.

And about a mile from me on the outskirts of newcastle.I seen 4 together this spring near my house. I thought they were scavangers aswell and would be suprised if one tackled a pheasant or rabbit. anser2
Oneshotkiller, you will ned a licence to disturbe from Natural England if you are thinking about taking photos of the nest , or even aproaching any near the nest. Otherwise you could be in for a heavy fine. Red Kite are a schedual one species.
bruno22rf
They were released at christmas common in bucks over 20 years ago-if you are in the Aylesbury area pop along to haddenham-some days you can see 10-15 in the air over the village.Never heard of one killing anything but small game-strange for such a big bird. Sprinter
I usually see 3-4 red kites when i am out and about on the shoot. They are a pleasure to watch and do little harm to game birds as they mostly scavenge. Buzzards on the other hand are nearly at plague proportions, the other day there were 11 (eleven) circling over a game covert. These buzzards can and do take game, their most recent tactic seems to be to sit in the top of a thick hedge and then just drop onto any unwary pheasant that happens to saunter by. It is disheartening to walk around the shoot and find half plucked game with the breasts eaten off almost every day.
