First woodcock of the season

Hi all was off work today so after I had fed the pheasants I decided I would take the 2 springers out a run for a couple of hours.

So arrived at the destination and walked a burn down with a few gorse bushes and rough bushes down both sides. When I got towards the bottom the first woodcock flushed and I dropped it with the first shot, as I was on my way to retrieve it another 1 flushed where the first 1 had dropped and due to the suprise it escaped without even a barrel. Another 50 yards down the burn I was makings my way through some rough cover to make my way to the other side when another 1 woodcock flushed and again this bird escaped without a shot :good: . So when I crossed over the burn I worked down alongside a fur plantation and the springer flushed another woodcock which this time was too close as it nearly flew into me so let it go.

Made my way across the fields towards the next rough area and was walking through a area notoriously good for Snipe and sure enough 1 flushed which I dropped again with the first shot. The sound of this shot had disturbed a dozen or so pigeons which flew towards me at a rapid rate and all but 2 stayed well clear, so I swung on 1 of the birds over head which was quite high and I dropped it with the 2nd shot (I was very chuffed :D at this as the bird was a genuine high bird and it was moving quickly). So moved on to do another bit of rough cover at the bottom of a fur plantation and flushed 2 more woodcock which I never got a shot at. I then flushed another Snipe but this 1 was too quick for me and I missed it with 2 shots.

Last small burn I flushed another woodcock which I shot with the first shot. All in all it was a good day, but if I hada been shooting with my best mate we probably would have bagged more, but as anyone who shoots woodcock regularly knows the birds usually fly the other side when your by yourself  . But I can't complain, I shot well, the old bitch hunted brilliant and the pup (now 6 months old) is really coming on and is starting to hunt the cover more. The pup also retrieved the pigeon and Snipe.
