hi there i am going fishing for perch this saturday and i was wondering if anyone can give me some ideas on effective rigs and baits which should help me catch one

where do u start...

depends what type of water it is..river lake canal???

personally i would start with a nice minnow on a size 6/8 on a small dibber float....fished about 3 inch off the bottom..if its a lake try and find the ledge where is goes down deep and fish on that..

or a big juicy lobworm again on a waggler set up with plenty of chopped worm in the groundbait..

if you want the bigger perch, go with either the minnow idea, or (and this would be my first go) a large lob worm 'popped' up off the bottom - either by carefully injecting from one end of it with air (but this can be tricky) or some pop up foam (the name escapes me) about 1.5ft from the bottom.

Get out with a dim torch tonight and search your garden the local cricket pitch anywhere where there's plenty of short (ish) grass and wet (ish) and gather up as many Lob worms as you can. Use them chopped into half inch (12mm to you :D ) segments as groundbait with a nice longer piece with tail chopped off as hookbait, if you're lake is reasonably deep around the margins don't be affraid to feed this inside line literally tight against the bank aswell as your main line, and give it a drop in every now and again.

Is the lake a commercial carp fishery as these type of venues are inadvertently yielding some terrific Perch :hmm:???

TP

Edit

If you're pole fishing try lifting the bait or even jigging it up and down every so often to entice a bite

Worm, if a river, then a single SSG shot on the line also and let it bounce down naturally.

You either want a big juicy lob, or, I find little red worms normally found under wet wood laying around the garden to be the best bait.

or...my current favourite method - fly fish for them (have spun for them for many years also)

When fly-fishing, use a small, silver and red based fly, be careful when casting as you'll need to cast under trees etc. I find fly fishing puts more natural movement in to the lure and they attack then very aggressively.

Good luck, have fun, post some pictures!!!

I would definately go for the worm tip and my biggest tip would be dont use any setup that gives them any resistance as they take or they will let go. If you are close to mid range try using a dotted down (so only a little bit of the tip is showing) insert waggler or for longer range use a free running leger rig set to a light bobbin or quiver tip

The problem with perch fishing is that its hard to be selective, one way that does help is size of bait.

Don't be afraid to put 3 large lobworms on a size 6 or 4 hook.

I do well using small dead baits (up to 3" long), but they have to be freshwater fish, not sea baits (sprats, whitebait, etc).

That means they have to come from the water that you are fishing.

The rig I use is either freelined ledger, or float ledger without any weight.

I don't use wire for perch, so I don't use deadbaits in waters where there are pike.

A good tip is to try deadbaits in the commercial day ticket "carp" waters.

These often hold very big perch as nobody really targets them.

5lb 2 oz Perch is a corker. My 2lber looked big enough. Best of luck.
