Our 14 month old JRT in the last 3 days has started to carry his rear right leg, we have checked him over and no visable injorys are showing and he shows no sign of pain but is increasingly doing it. I trimmed his hair between his pads as this was a little long and may of been irritating him but this didnt help and so trimmed his claws so he was deffinatly comfortable when walking but has carryed on doing it even when running. He also has only just started to cock his leg when pee`ing but doesnt know why he`s doing it and just does it in the middle of the lawn not up anything but this i doubt has any bearing on it. al4x Posted November 23, 2009 Report Share Posted November 23, 2009 (edited) some do it as habbit, i've had numerous ones that just lift a leg and run like it very strange but they sometimes will swap which one they like to hold up. sako751sg Posted November 23, 2009 Report Share Posted November 23, 2009 Probably nothing wrong with him at all,as many of them start carrying a leg for some reason.I know one that whenever another dog comes close does it,and it seems to be as a sympathy thing with him,although i dont know for sure. We actually took her to the vets and they x-rayed her to make sure it wasn't too severe a case. The vet told us it's very common in small breeds and what happens is the knee joint locks into position, then a change of speed, ie walk into run/run into walk will unlock it and they'll carry on as if nothings wrong. They didn't operate as she's never in any discomfort with it and she was very young (Probably about the same age as yours). She's 6 and a half now.. You might want to take the little fella to the vets to be sure, but I would imagine (If it's the same problem as our dog) that they'll not want to operate on such a young dog if it's not hurting or showing any signs of discomfort. steve0146 Posted November 23, 2009 Report Share Posted November 23, 2009 My Jack Russell does this. Shes is not in pain and changes legs occassionally. I'm sure she does it for sympathy. We took her to the vets and they put her on anti biotics. After no change they recommended surgery and looking in her bone marrow! After two years it is definately a terrier habit. Is he still lifting his leg or alternating it, if so I wouldn't worry at all. I have a bitch that used to do that, lift a back leg and walk on three for about three or four steps, then she would bring it down again. She did it quite a lot when she was young but is five now and only does it occasionally but I wouldn't worry about it. activeviii Posted July 29, 2010 Report Share Posted July 29, 2010 ^^^^ you beat me to it^^^^ I was only talking to my vet about this very thing a few days ago. my pup was limping so h had a good look for this. knock to the leg in my case. It is very common in JRT's. the knee cap runs in a groove, up and down as they walk, on occasions the cap pops out of this groove, the dog hops on other three legs for a few paces until the cap pops back into place. he siad very common and a opp to deepen the trench can fix it but most people just live with it. regards Phil. Having looked it up and taken him to the vet I believe it is called Unspecified hind leg lameness. Quite common in Borders so may apply to more terriers.
