i need new chesties and the problem is the boot makers for thigh and chest waders are still putting a naff boot onto the extention for some reason, we have all worked out that a good neopreen liner like Muck boots are the best for warm feet, then the likes of Snowbee glue really cheap garden type wellies to make a wader,,,, its all wrong

I too and looking at buying a new pair as mine are a few seasons old and leaking around the top of one leg.

I had thought about buying a pair of the stockinged foot ones and a pair of ankle boots over the top. I don't like the neprene ones in the mud as they stretch and you get stuck easily.

My last pair were Ocean ones from John Norris but they had crappy boots stuck on the ends.

You have a pm mate. Might be of interest regarding thigh boots. I won`t wear chest waders in the punt for the same reason as you.

Got to agree about the cheap boot they put in most chest waders. A mate of mine was fed up with the boot continually pulling off in the mud so he bought an inexpensive but correctly fitting pair of wellingtons and had the local diving shop, who make wetsuits, cut the old boot off and affix the new ones. Problem solved. Don`t know why the manufacturers do`nt do it right in the first place.

Agree with the above...I've yet to find a pair of waders that have anything resembling a good boot stuck on the end. Neoprene by Snowbee are IMO the best but the boots are kak! My solution; buy a pair of muck boots or something similar in neoprene and stick them on the bottoms, it's not difficult and makes all the difference to the comfort and warmth. BTW I find 'Gorilla' glue bloody marvelous, it sticks like the proverbial stuff to a blanket AND is also waterproof! You'll destroy the item before the glue will come apart! :|

Waders and deep water have always concerned me so a good life jacket is again IMO essential. This is where fishing and shooting gear can often overlap as some of the fly fishing jackets are brill for that purpose. :D

Which Gorilla glue do you use on waders Highlander?

I've a pair of waders that need a patch re-applying (again) & some muckboots that leak but would be useable (if only to keep in the landy) if I coud find a decent glue to repair them.

Most glues I've tried have failed after using the waders/wellies a couple of times.

Waders sinking you is a fallacy. Hugh Falkus did a fantastic film Salmo the Leaper in which he jumped into a fast flowing river. he was over sixty at the time and got out with no problem! The only time you have a problem with them getting out of the water is if you want to stand up. If you come out on all fours, crawling, you will not have a problem. It's less than elegant but emintently practical, then lay on your back and raise your legs and the water (or most of it) drains away.

If you do not fancy chesties try waist waders, at least you will still have a dry bum!

I have snowbee neoprene chesties, with the "ninja" soles. they are the best I have ever bought. Nothing cheap and nasty about them, much better quality than all the others I have seen. Nearly 10 years old and still going strong.

I have had two pairs of Aigle thigh waders, both cracked badly and were returned. I will not buy any more!

I've got some Lacrosse Brush-Tuff chest waders that I got as Field And Forces were closing down.

They were a bit more like 'neck' waders though, when they came. Size 13 'Giant' on the ticket. Half RRP though. I reckon they would keep you afloat, but perhaps your head might be under water without a life jacket for upper body buoyancy.

I expect there have been more duck shot from punts by people wearing just leather boots than those wearing waders or even wellingtons!

As far as I know there's only the one...it has a gorilla pic on the label. Sticks stuff to pretty well anything. I put a big hole in a pair of Chameau wellies (pointed stick went right through into my leg, bloody hedge thrashers) but sealed and stuck wth Gorilla glue and it's as good as new.

Two points really.

Don't even think about getting boot-foot waders. Get stocking-foot and wear them with a decent pair of wading boots. More satisfactory in every respect.

Secondly, to back up what Flytie said, the idea that chest waders are dangerous if they "fill up with water" is a total fallacy. If there is any danger, it would be from air trapped in them - so don't wear a belt over them.

They should be close-fitting enough to avoid very much water or air getting between you and the waders - but think about it - even is some water does get in, the water inside the waders is not any heavier than the water outside the waders, so it won't make you sink. Also, with stocking-foot chesties and proper wading boots, there is no space for air to get in around the feet, which would be a real danger with loose fitting wellies or thigh waders. Then you really could go **** over tip.
