Marcus
Hi All I'm new to shooting (clays) I have been fortunate enough to have been taken out by a kind member on here to experience a morning on the pigeon / crows etc which I really enjoyed and found very interesting (Thanks Steve_ Anyway, to my point. I travel along the motorway every day and have noticed now for some time a field (stubble of some sort at the moment)that has about 3 (that I can see from the M-Way) decoys. Nothing unusual in that you may think, but they are there every day, never move position (ill wait for the comments regarding that statement, but you know what I mean) they dont look like pigeon decoys or crows etc, possibly a bit larger and more brown in colour. What would they be there for? Is the farmer using a decoy of a Bird of Preys to keep off the pigeon / crows ? Im sure someone on here will enlighten me........thanks
monkeymagic1969
Are you positive they are decoys?? - Buzzards will sit in a field at this time of year ( they never seem to move) and by what you describe, that's what they sound like!! Marcus
Alien Buzzards ?? Yes, there every day, just leaving for work now, will check again
Cranfield
Are these things sitting on the ground ? Are you sure they are birds, or birdlike ? There is nothing on stubble that the Farmer would want to protect, unless he has drilled straight into it. Could it be hares or rabbits ? beretta
around here at the moment we have a large gathering of herrons that love nothing better than just sitting out in the middle of the fields.
MM
tree stump decoys?
Marcus
These are definately sitting on the ground They are definately 'birds' and as I observed the birds on more than one occasion, in same position I took them to be decoys Maybe my description of stubble was not accurate, its was a bare field (earth) to begin with, and have passed it several times when these 'bird's were present a number of days in a row. Could see that something was starting to grow last week etc Passed it today - no birds there today, field is green with sheep in. So I guess it was planted with grass ? Strange, wish I had asked last week. Would someone have been decoying on the field and left the decoys in place ?

Marcus
buzzards allways see them in numbers sat in fields They did look like birds of prey, but as I seen them on more than one occasion (not moved) I took them to be decoys But from the replies I guess 'bird of prey decoys' are not the norm Ill have to ask the doctor to up my meds ! Lez325
I would say they are Buzzards- this time of year I too have noticed on my shoots there seems to be lots of them around and they cogregate on freshly turned earth maybe insects they're after Who knows? Les
Billy.
But from the replies I guess 'bird of prey decoys' are not the norm Actually, they are. People put owl and other bird of prey decoys out to shoot corvids, as they hate birds of prey, especially if they've got a rabbit or broken eggs at their feet...! If the 'bird' looks about 2/3ft tall and sitting very still, it'll be a buzzard or the like.

955i
Why not find the farm and go and ask the farmer. That way if he says that they are something trivial at least you will know, and if he says they are decoys as he has a pest problem you can offer your services and may get some land to shoot Edited December 6, 2009 by 955i

A bolt 22.250
"Top idea" just dont shoot the buzzards as i nearly did when one poped over the hedge. Sprung out of my seat only to see him trying to feast on a decoy. Edited December 7, 2009 by A bolt 22.
