kyska
Hopefully getting a Mk 4 Golf GT TDi 150 at the weekend I've got one for sale. great cars, we've bought a new very fast Leon, so the golf has to go. You'll love it! Is it the six speed too?
smiiithy
It is indeed. Would you care to send me the details and asking price of yours? Edited December 11, 2009 by smiiithy
kyska
I'd put some pics up for you, but I can't in here I don't think. I'm going to advertise after new year. It a 53/04 plate 150ps GTI (with the red 'I'), midnight blue, condition is easy to see. 90,000 on the clock, full service (part VW) history, all the normal GTI extras. We were hoping to get around £5000, which reflects the mileage, in this condtion with average milage (60,000) parkers recommend well over £6000. al4x
probably the best time to sell it, my brothers looking at one at 95K thats just had the cam and lobes done plus the flywheel which seem to go about this mileage thats an 03 and £4750 one things for sure you don't want to pay for them to be done yourself think the bill was just over 3K
smiiithy
I'd of been prepared to wait and it would be perfrect for me but I'm on quite a tight budget so looking for higher milage and a slightly older one myself. Best of luck with your sale This is the one I'm going to see on Sunday My line of thinking was if I was going to spend more than £3.5K then I might as well of paid the extra and got a Mk 5. There's just something special about the Mk 4 shape though.
kyska
Yep, the cam belts are new on mine too, this work was carried out by VW.

njc110381
My other halfs brother has one, they're nice cars. He had his chipped some time a go, it's pretty quick for a diesel! As far I know he's never had any trouble with it. I think this shape was the best looking of the lot, just personal opinion mind. We went out to buy one of these ourselves. Trouble is the dealer had a V6 4Motion sat in the corner looking sad. He said he'd had it for ages and nobody wanted it because it's thirsty. Well me being me fell in love with it and bought it on the spot!

smiiithy
Just found that Golf on Google Maps Street View at the dealers address It looks like dodgey dealings in a rough area to me Whats the chances of typing in the dealers address for directions and finding the same make and model of car in the same colour and with the same wheels parked further down the street
smiiithy
Managed to get a clearer picture of the reg on Google by going down the street a bit and then zooming in and it seems the one on the map is a 52 plate and the one for sale is a 02 It a 53/04 plate 150ps GTI (with the red 'I' Edited December 16, 2009 by smiiithy

smiiithy
No way. It drove fine and was great to drive but something was blatantly very wrong as soon as I opened the bonnet, there was black oil splattered absolutely everywhere. The sponge on the bottom of the plastic engine cover was just drenched in the stuff. He tried telling me that oil had been split toping it up but this was dirty oil not clean stuff out of the bottle and there was so much of it. A lot of it was dried on the pipes and looked like it had been there for some time. I think something has gone wrong and they've patched it up but haven't done a very good job of cleaning it up. The area was packed with boy racers and I couldn't get over the number of Golfs. I hope never to return to Bradistan.
Mungler
Mungler's top tip - if you are patient and canny then wait for a 1 owner or 1 previous owner car. People look after what they buy from new (and it's the first 20k of miles that settles the engine) and with +1 owner it's easier to check the history - just 192 the previous the owner on the V5 and phone them to see what they thought of the car before they sold it. Also, never buy a car off a farmer, someone who can't afford to service it or someone with pointy shoes and too much gel in their hair (e.g. estate agents etc. because they would have raced everything at every set of lights)
smiiithy
Yes your right, it's just trying to find the right car at the right price. I really should buy private as opposed to from a dealership as I'm much more likely to get the genuine info on the car and it's probably a bit easier to haggle I quite like the look of this one but it's only the 130bhp which is a shame
njc110381
They're not hard or expensive to chip
smiiithy
If I was going to spend the money I'd probably want to remap it rather than just a plug in chip. I suppose the post remap difference between the 130 and 150 is only 10bhp and 20lbft of torque but doing the remap would kill my insurance. Theres a possibility they wouldn't even allow performance enhancing mods at my age
al4x
Smiithy you're looking at a very dodgy end of the car market and one issue with Golfs is the things that go wrong tend to be expensive, My brother picked his one up at the weekend and yes they are very nice but his certainly has cost its owner a pretty penny. He looked at a lot that had been chipped and these did seem to have had more go wrong than the one he finally went for that was a private sale and had had the usual expensive stuff done. One things for sure now the diesel engines are being subjected to increased stress from ever increasing power outputs so the reliability is coming down. As Mungler says you ideally need to look hard and possibly spend a bit more for a car with a good history and as low mileage as possible. With buying second hand cars you never know if you've got a good buy till about 6 months after you've bought it and sorted all the nigly things out. smiiithy
We are unable to provide a quote for you because of the following reasons: We are unable to insure a car with this type of modification(s) I have found a very local 150 that's new on AutoTrader. It's not a great ad but I've spoken to the owner and she's given me some info but need to speak to her husband for all the details.
smiiithy
Another factor could be that those who chip their cars are a lot more likely to be giving it all it's got as opposed to those who don't. I'd very much like to find a private one with a lady owner but the 150's generally seem to appeal to male drivers for obvious reasons. The one above could be perfect if all the details check out. smiiithy
2001 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 1.9 GT TDI 5dr Diesel Hatchback 2001 Reg Hatchback 125,000 miles Manual 1.9L Diesel £3,495 (sounds negotiable might get it for £3K or thereabouts) The advert is quite poor as he hasn't added all the details but I've spoken to the seller. It's on as a 150 but doesn't have the wood surround and I'm hoping it's a 130 or at a push the 115. 150's only came about in 2002 to my knowledge. It is very hard to actually tell which is which unless you know the engine codes which I've got ready to check so he probably doesn't know himself. 125,000 miles Got MOT but I can't remember when until Full service history stamped every 10K or thereabouts 4 previous owners Last service in April at 122,000 miles (just before he bought car from dealer) Timing belt last done at 80,000 miles Not taxed as his wife is disabled and get it free so would need to be taxed 18" alloy wheels (Replicas from Foxhunters) It's got brand new tyres on it Factory fitted CD player Traction control Climate control The car was originally registered with reg CN51 VKS It was changed to a private plate K18 LJD in 2005 This is coming up as a 2003 VW Beetle on insurance quote but not 100% I've wrote it down correctly He bought the car from a local dealer M&S Car Sales in Ponteland, Northumberland in April 2009. It's only done 3,000 miles since then. His story is that he bought it for his wife and it isn't being used so they are downsizing to one car. He is an out of work taxi driver and has 12 points on his licence. His other car is an Octavia (170bhp or something). Opinions appreciated. It's getting plugged into the diagnostic computer and going up on the hoist tomorrow for my MOT tester to have a good poke around and it will be getting a RAC HPI if I go for it. Should I HPI the old reg or the private plate?
