joeainscow
Hi, I was given a winchester 101 o/u 12g as my first gun by my uncle. He'd had since new which i think would be 20 years ago. Does anyone know how to take them apart fully or is this not a good idea? Its just i like my guns to be spotless when i put them away and this one has some dirt (it's a build up of dirt trapped in the excess oil) in the bottom below where the firing pins are. I've tried pipe cleaners ect but can't really get to it. Any cleaning advice or how to dismantle would be great. Many Thanks Joe
humperdingle
Does anyone know how to take them apart fully or is this not a good idea? Many Thanks Joe I assume you mean take it apart beyond taking the barrels off? Try using a spray oil to thin out any thick oily deposits, then use one of the missus' old make up brushes or an old paint brush to get out the gunk. Unless you know what you're doing, I wouldn't attempt a full strip-down. Details on a full strip-down can usually be downloaded from the net. COACH
Yep! WD40 or alike and an artists brush (stiffish) is what I use on my guns including the my old Winchester. I use the WD40 as a power hose. Take the stock off first. Leave it upside down to drain for an hour or two to drain off excess wd40. Wonderful old guns but look after it as spares are almost non existent, they have to butcher a Browning part to fit or make a new part, very expensive. BlaserF3
WD40 will eventually gum things up, use paraffin or a proper gun cleaner for guns.

Godd for lots of other stuff, though. I use Legia spray. You get a massive aerosol can for about £8 or £9...
joeainscow
I've actually found a few online shops based in the US that sell spares for the 101, from firing pins to barrels, cheap as well. $11 for a spare set of firing pins!! Cheers for all the advice. I'll attack it today armed with pipe cleaners, rags, and every solvent based liquid! lol oj. i'll try some gun cleaning spray. Must admitt ive never used any before. Just use gun oil? Joe

badger.22cal
I've actually found a few online shops based in the US that sell spares for the 101 Make sure its the same winchester 101 as in america some years ago they bought out a new gun with the same name as the winchester 101 but it is a different model... however if the parts are compatible then well found. Gordon R
http://www.doublegunshop.com/showler.htm I think Chris Showler does export to the UK.
swift4me
It has a through bolt, so if you get the stock off, it is a breeze to get it really clean. If you use a spray cleaner that really does the job, then make sure to lightly lubricate appropriate areas in the receiver, and grease the friction surfaces between the receiver/forend iron and barrel flats. I'd be very careful of using any pressurized spray in the bottom of that receiver if you don't take the stock off.... and WD-40 would be way down my list of choices for your purpose. There are parts for 101's in America, and I'd figure there are some who would post to the UK. I would have in my shop. The first gun I bought here in France 10 years ago is an XTR Lightweight 101. Very dependable guns I think. Good luck, Pete
joeainscow
Cheers for all the advice. I'd never thought of posting it myself Can you recommend a gd cleaner as i only ever use gun oil. Joe
COACH
If your actually going out to get a good gun cleaner/oil then Legia or Napier are very good and are made for the job. I should also state that I use WD40 as a wash but then use Napier as a lubricant etc after as it`s to expensive to use Napier as a wash. You must clean the WD40 off after, or as the guys say it can gum up after several applications. Edited December 23, 2009 by COACH
joeainscow
I've only ever heard good comments about Legia so i'll give that a go next time i'm at the gun shop. Cheers Joe
felly100
Can you use Phillips Gun Barrel Cleaner round the firing pin area or just down the barrels?
