I'm with the last two posters...attitude will lose you more work tahn you'll ever gain...by the way I'm a dyed in the wool Tory and all they stand for and I want full references from any builder I employ as most are the pits!

You are correct and the reason quite often is that there has been a boom in work and spending until last year.

The times I've heard "Didn't really want the job so I bunged in a mega price and they bit"

Builders/painters have become arrogant believing they are worth more than they are. It's human nature I suppose to want more for less.

There is a right price for any job.

There is nothing that can't be made worse for less money.

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low cost has disapeared.

One of the ways in which I have gained work is on completion of a job ask. "If you were doing my job who would you approach for work?"

Also ask "can I add you to my prestige list"

I can speak to all my old customers because i left them happy. I know that a lot of men who fall out and can't.

Far play i'll even agree with the last three posts myself but surly people are going to tell about the biggest and bestest jobs they have ever done or do you want me to tell you about the times iv painted round used public toilets mmmmm

You see, I like you more already!!

You just came across that way, and I'd even go as far as saying you sounded too expensive even without quoting a price if that makes sense! At a guess, if you have done what you say you have done, the quality of your work should be decent, concentrate on the quality of your work in your sales pitch and you'll get more quote requests is my view; And hopefully more work.

Good luck

:good::yes:

Builders put in big prices for jobs they didn't want to do based on the people/customer's there quoting for. The first thing a Builder/ tradesman will do is way up who there going to be working for. If they seem like abit of a nutter then a big quote they will get. and they would be able to move onto someone who seemed abit more normal.

Now things are slack they just have to work for whoever wants work doing.

As for the arrogance, No they just need to earn a certain ammount to be able to make ends meet. None of the builders or tradesmen I know are driving arround in Bentleys.

Your forgetting that in the boom time every eastern european worker was or wanted to come over here and cash in. And they did. Builders/tradesmen havn't had it that good and become "Arrogant"

What is a prestige list

This man knows the score im with you 100% mate  its the most sence iv heard on this thread all day :good: i had 13 lads working for me at one point until the builders i subcontracted for didn't pay on one of the jobs (£15000) made up some ******** story about snags and didnt pay (now thats a lesson that cant be learnt at uni) end of my firm then i had to work like a loon on my own to pay my overdraft back (cashflow) by which point all the builders i did work for had stopped building and the bank closed my account once they had there money back

Shawi72uk, you sound like you will only go to work if someones house is of a certain size or the people own £5000 guns and look like they have money to burn!!

You then talk about how rich your clients have been and the "bucket loads of money" you have earned!

Maybe if you spoke more about the quality of your work and services you can provide, then you might get more response for offers of work. You never know, maybe a middle class person might dare to ask for a quote!!

Fair point i think :good:

bucket loads of money days are gone, drop your price and get on with it,some work is surely better than nothing  all the best for finding some work, but plenty more are looking too

The days of greedy " fill yer boots son " im off down the pub by four on a Friday builders are long gone thank God. About time too, all the best ops at the moment are not those with the attitude they are doing the homeowner a favour. Those who base their prices on the client rather than the job dont deserve the work, bitch into your beer all you want but over priced cowboys are a thing of the past.

Are they heck long gone  There the ones that will survive because they have no scrupples.(I detest them).

There long gone :hmm: Dont think so.

Even the best most reliable builders are struggling today. Everyone is holding onto what little money they have.

It wasn't construction workers who got us into this recession, And I have never met a tradesmen who thought they were doing the householder a favour.

Next time employ a real builder, joiner, painter, plumber, plasterer who comes from recomendations its simple.

If a guy comes on here and advertises his work then makes a decent contact ...Great !! A bit of work comes his way and everyones happy !

I dont think he is daft enough to do that and then produce **** work !

he would be cutting his own throat !

A few decent jobs and his reputation will go before him and the work will come in hopefully .

If he is good ,then everyone on here will hear about it !

If he is not , then we will hear about it quicker !!!

He will reach as many people on here as he will pushing cards through the door !

Good luck to you !

If this forum is to be used for advertising for work wanted or tradesmen/services wanted perhaps there should be a new link. Call it say JOBSEEKER.

Pushing cards or leaflets through l/boxes generates 1in 350 ratio of enquiries.

Cold calling using good practice and presentation generates 1 in 15.

Damn right they are gone, who in their right mind works those sort of long hours?

On a serious note letting and estate agents are the ones to contact, A shooting mate of mine does a lot of property maintainence and he almost solely works for about 6 different agencies.

It may only be an odd day here or there but it pays the bills.
