Cosd
For the techies out there, I want to make a very light weight magnet to use just for my hyperflaps ( I have a normal magnet for real birds when needed). When looking for a motor to use, what are the technical specs I should be looking for? I don't understand, torque, brushes, brushless etc Are these suitable? http://www.virtualvillage.co.uk/12v-dc-qui...001480-115.html http://www.virtualvillage.co.uk/12v-dc-60-...001480-163.html So far I know I need: 12v Geared at 60rpm Edited January 13, 2010 by Cosd

Mcf Looks very interesting indeed - any build details would be good and very interesting I guess it will still need a speed controller as 60RPM is still too fast
McF
They also do a 30 and a 15 rpm one. Edited January 14, 2010 by McF

Cosd
They don't seem man enough to me. webber Webber, is that a guess or from a techie perspective? If it's the latter, can you explain what I should be looking for please. Looking at the Hyperflap magnet on the sponsors site, the casing for the motor is tiny!! McF
Cosd Webber is a very highly qualified engineer and its hes way of saying the motor is not good enough for the job you have in mind. mcf

activeviii
the top one. 60RPM. They work fine, if you can get combo ones then better still but i have one here that was made with the 60rpm. only good for the flappers but works well. its ontop of the cupboard now with 2 others i have made from wiper and window motors. i want and got a bargain on a pinewood so there just sat here now until i find a use. no arms just the stands and couple of inches of wire.lol. the spindal is offset on the above motors so need a little bigger casing, i got a way with a 2" tube. thanks BT.lol Phil. Nial
The torque of the biggest one is only 130N cm which isn't a lot. This will lift 13kg at 1 cm or 1.3kg at 10cm, at 1 meter it's only 0.13kg, and that's with one arm. You really need something a bit beefier. Nial. Nial
Thanks for that Nial, can you tell me what the minimum I should be looking for please! Not off the top of my head. Measure the length of your arms (in meters), then estimate the equivalent 'weight' the motor would have to lift to rotate the birds at the end (this is mostly just the wind resistance when you get going but you want to be able ot overcome gusts of wind). The torque you need is (arm length in meters) X (rough weight to rotate bird in kg's) X 10 (to convert to Newtons). You're rotating two arms so muntilpy this by 4 to give some overhead. Any other techie bits I should look for? Again not off the top of my head. Nial.
