Frenchieboy
Yes times have changed haven't they. I too can remember being able to carry a broken gun down the street uncovered. That was when you went to the Post Office for your Gun Licence which cost you 10 shillings! Mind you, the village I lived in was that small it could easily have been missed if you blinked youe eyes when you cycled through it! RC45
I got stopped a few years back carrying a wood saw back from a mates house? I have even had neighbours frown when the see me carrying my guns from the car, even though they are sleaved. Welcome to paranoia!
vulpicide
Write a letter of complaint to the PO also point out that in Scotland you need to go into a Post Office to buy a game licence. Metion that you were deeply offended and embarresed at being berated by such a poorly trained and ill informed employee.

Welcome to paranoia! its the first time i've ever had any sort of issue, where i use to live i regularly went in the local shops with my gun slipped, as on a saturday i would quite often spend from early morning till evening out on my various permissions and would nip to the shop to get my dinner before heading somewhere else, i've even been in the co-op with a load of rabbits hanging out the gamebag, admittedly it was a country village but round here there is a large shooting community so i didn't expect the hysteria

Vince Green
Technically, if the police had got involved they would have said you should take your gun home by the shortest practicable route and in the shortest practicable time. Making detours to buy your lottery ticket would be seen as bending the rules. You can have your gun in a public place, provided it is covered, with reasonable excuse but stopping off to buy lottery tickets would not be seen as reasonable. Also, going ito a Post Oficce with a gun may not be illegal as such but it could be a Public Order offence. (Conduct liable to cause alarm or distress to a member of the public). There is so much flipping hysteria these days where guns are concerned that you have to be so careful. As others have said, years ago nobody would have given it a second glance. Mr Potter
Were the Postmaster & Mistress long standing locals or relative newcomers? I don't live in a country village, wish I did but from what I know and read, all villages these days are populated by townie incomers, the vast majority have no knowledge of country ways, field sports, farming etc whatsoever. No need to, you did the right thing by apologising and leaving. You could go back unarmed some time, have a chat so that he will recognise you next time. Good luck with the shoot Bill

Mr_Logic
A quiet word thereafter solves that issue, in a nice, I-want-to-educate-you-and-not-berate-you kind of way. Simply because, you are completely legal, and they need to know and understand this. While we don't want to offend the public, it is our duty to spread the word as best we can that legally-held firearms are almost always owned by normal people, who are courteous and polite. Joe Public needs to learn the law, and stop being so sensitive!
