Bobbo.
I heard that the demand for the .17HMR is starting to wane, and the demand for the .22WMR is starting to rise again, don't know if there's any truth in it, perhaps it's just in certain area's. Cheers Bobbo.
njc110381
It depends on the task I guess. I've never had a WMR but have had a HMR. I found the HMR great for longish range small quarry but hopeless when the target species get larger. If you're just going for bunnies and birds then the HMR is great. If you want to include Fox and maybe even perhaps Hare then the WMR looks to be a good bet. Not quite so flat shooting but gives more of a whack when it arrives. The HMR bullet is just too light for bigger game!
bennyblanco
I think I might ask for one as a lamping rifle and get a semi automatic Might cost a bit to run though, what does ammunition cost compared to the .17?
wildfowler.250
I think the .17 is great on anything up to and including the size of a fox, (at sensible ranges). .22 magnum is less accaurate past 100 yards (compaired to the HMR) I hear. And I had a look at the price of .22 mag ammo and it's a fair bit more spensif! Oh but you can get the .22 in semi auto
Mr_Logic
.22 WMR ammo is cheaper than HMR as a rule. I'd have the WMR. If I'm shooting past about 120 regularly I'd use a CF anyway as I can't be ***** with HMR's windage and tiny amounts of energy - that's how wounding occurs and I like to avoid! WMR is good on rabbit and fox to 120 yards, cheap to feed and accurate enough. Plus since the rest of the world seems to think it's **** then you can get a decent gun at a sensible price. However, I have Hornet as it's better than both, as quiet as both, and only a fraction more expensive to run.

Thats a good post, I have wmr and hmr on my fac, but have been told numerous times to stick to the hmr and go for hornet, I'm going for .204, reason being I can't have anything other than a CF for fox. I'd go HMR if you have a CF on too, I like the round, I like how safe it is and to be honest when its really windy I think the wmr would suffer too. wmr is more difficult to buy around my parts, people just don't use them. Devonhunter
I have both , i would feel more comfortable taking a fox with the wmr at sensible ranges than the hmr simply because it hits harder , but if you want to shoot fox then get a fox gun !! Regarding accuracy at 100 yards my wmr is just as accurate as my hmr for certain but yes on a good day the hmr is better for longer range shots , ammo wise i pay £6.75 for a brick of cci maxi mag for the wmr and £8.50 for hornady blue tips for hmr. njc110381
I have to agree that the Hornet aces both of them! Because it's so mild for a centrefire it's going to be one of the easier ones to get cleared too.

I have both calibres and for 100 rounds pay £20-22 for WMR, and £22-£28 for HMR (Hornady Blue Tip specials excluded)! I have always, and still currently, find WMR cheaper than HMR!! ATB!! Cheers Bobbo. It depends what you want to do with it. The WMR is NOT better than the HMR, it is different, and vice versa. I have both..(and a .22lr). They both have their uses and I have just traded my old WMR for a brand new one. I have a use for both, but I love the WMR!!

deadeye
http://www.chuckhawks.com/compared_17HMR_22WMR.htm excellent write up on the two cartridges. i enjoy shooting my .17hmr and it is very accurate and i primarily use it for shooting paper. i personally believe that it is not an ethical choice for fox. the .22 wmr would be better, but i think something in the .222 or .223 class is far better yet for fox. the .17 is good for small game and vermin.
