shotgun for fox

I loaded some 3" carts with 14 sg shot ( you can only get 9 in a 70mm cart). I can say that they were pretty useless above 25 yrds or so as they pattern so badly. I think that the effective range of bbs or 1s Is way longer as you get a proper pattern at range.

are those sg's for foxes? they look evil i want some! :good:

They're probably better suited for chopping trees down at close range...

You'll be better off with the BB's though.Im not excally experienced at shooting Foxes and can only credit myself with 2,but both of mine dropped stone dead at around 30 yards with BB's.Didnt even need a follow up shot either and they're priced well at approximately £8 a box..

Lyalvale cartridges.

42g BB load is the best load imho. available in 2,3/4" and does the business.

sg is designed for close stuff. yankies use them in their guns fixed on cylinder choke. (less choke - less damage to the shot.)

i wouldnt use sg on fox, you can drive a planet through the gaps in the pattern.

any loads bigger than 42g will be 3" magnum.

While out shooting Woodcock I have shot foxes with 7 1/2's; however I wouldn't advise them for regular fox work. When I am doing holes with the terrier I would use 4's or 3's in 36g load because the bolting fox is usually quite close. When we are hunting cover with the hounds I will use 42g 2's.

I agree with the common opinion on SG/SSG's. The combination of larger shot size/fewer pellets can leave huge holes in the pattern and shot distorition in tighter choked barrels. There's also the potential richocets to consider.

I use 42grams No2/BB or AAA at the most, with full or 3/4 choke they'll fold a fox up comfortably. If your using a shotgun on them regularly you cant beat a large capacity semi auto, less recoil compared to an o/u or s/s, a 3rd, 4th.......shots if you need them. I prefer to use the smaller shot sizes and take more shots if necessary.

+1

i actually wouldnt use AAA. but i might use #2s if its all i had. BBs come out on top. as a happy medium between SG or LG (whatever it is) and #6.

however i suspect #6 shot has taken more foxes than all the shotsizes put together.

my first (and only fox) was shot with a 6.

it was so close i could have been its dentist. 3-5 yards.
