unclestuffy
I recently aquired a Manuarm .410 single barrel bolt action gun. Do you need to use the snap caps to take the pressure off the pins? or not? I presume you can use a once fired cartridge? Thank you
Fatcatsplat
Snap caps are gay and unnecessary, but their use is a matter of choice. However, DO NOT USE A USED CARTRIDGE - It not only looks like the real thing, it is the real thing!!
unclestuffy
Fatcatsplat, I must have two gay guns I hope they are not up to much in the cupboard together. I only meant to use the cartridges as a short term measure until I could get the new ones. Thank you
John_R
I am sure somewhere on PW it states the only purpose for snap caps is to give internet forums something on which to argue. I am in the "you don't need them" camp, but the choice is up to you. However, a used cartridge is a very bad idea, partly on safety grounds, but also after a few strikes they will be of no "benefit" as the primer will be dented too far. Thank you - obviusly I have inadvertantly set off a discussion that might well reach at least six pages. I have used the cartridges before (just once) whilst I order some new snap caps. If hyperthetically you were in the pro-camp for snap locks, would you use a snap lock on a bolt action .410? Thank you
Imperfection
I dont like the idea of loading anything into my guns while at home so snapcaps are a no no with me too.Using fired cartridges is just wrong in my opinion because you could become complacent and make a mistake. Bleeh
Do you put your car up on bricks each night to rest the suspension springs?. Anyway, if it's a bolt-action, you'd take the pressure off the spring from either removing the bolt, or by carefully holding onto the bolt, pulling the trigger, and guiding it in slowly. Colster
Irrespective of whether you like the idea of snap caps or not, a previously fired cartridge will not give the effect that a snap cap would give as the head of the primer is dented too far in and they have no spring in them like a snap cap does. Billy.
I'm 100% against snap caps. They're dangerous and actually make unbeknown members of the public think you're holding a loaded gun.
Brackers
Mmmmm, I am a bit on the fence here...! The only way I use snap caps is to fire by gun after cleaning. I then remove the forend, break the action and remove the snap caps, before replacing the forend and putting the gin in the cabinet. I would NEVER leave the house with anything in the chamber of the gun.
George1990
Snap caps end up with massive holes in them anyway after just a few whacks. Can be useful for dry pratice and feeling the trigger if you think it's playing up. Cheaper to use used bangers.
