Hello all,

started shooting after catching the bug last summer on a work organised day, and having finally got around to getting a certificate I need some advice. I have around £1500 to spend on my first gun and would preferably like a o/u suitable for clays and pigeons any suggestions

And on the slim chance of ever getting a pigeon shoot again I might buy a s/h semi-auto.

Welcome to PW

You dont say where you are from but I would pop into a few gunshops and see what fits you first, they will also give you some advice. You will have a good choice upto £1500 for a good first gun. Something along the lines of 28 - 32 inch multi choke. Browning and Berretta seem popular.

Best go into a gunshop. or shooting ground with guns for sale. You have to try mounting any gun to see if it fits your arm length, weight ect, an ill fitting gun will give you no end of misses and bruises in the field its one of the most important investments in shooting you'll make. and your budget should be more thatn enough to get you a decent gun.

Good luck matey!!

There is also Neath gun shop, Sportmans is newport (near tredegar house on industrial park) There are few others as well (A Bale in cardiff) and one in Hengoed, and i think one in Merthyr.

I only started recently but would suggest you spend £500 on lessons and £800 on a first gun for £800 you are looking at new bettinsoli, Lanber secondhand Berratta, Browning, Miroku etc

I inheritted a gun so didn't get a choice, but it does take a while to get used one I used a club gun for first few times out (berretta 686 at Treetops) and have tried a few others but mine is SbS game gun which probably isnt ideal for a beginner. Most clubs have a members for sale board and the beauty of this is you can fire 25 shells through it less pressure to buy, I do find it a bit mad dealers sell huge numbers of guns and dont allow people to try them first.

Let me know if you fancy missing some clays in south wlaes some time.
