2 Newbie questions

Okay - I said I may ask stoopid questions, :good: and if these are dealt with in older posts, can you direct me to them - I have looked and can' t find the answers in full.

1. SGC - several posts on here seem to suggest that it is best to have your cert with you at all times when you have your shotgun or cartridges with you. I am just a bit worried about if the cert is lost/stolen from my pocket/bag, the blagger has my address and personal details -ripe for a burglary etc. Is it sufficient to carry a photocopy of the certificate, with the address fogged out? Obviously I have no intention of mislaying etc my cert or anything else for that matter, but these thing are always possible.

2. How many cartridges can you buy on an SGC? I have read posts on here concerning discounts for bulk buying of cartridges. I am going to Newark next W/E and a couple of shooting friends have asked me to see if there are any good deals on cartridges for them (Obviously if the Cabinet doesn't fall off the wall tomorrow when the FLO is due to hand over the certificate :hmm: )

I am now going to hide under the stairs with a cuppa and a packet of biccies, so I can't hear the abuse etc

1. Carry a photocopy.

2. As many as you want / can afford. There's no limit.

Edited to add - I accidentally threw my certificate out with an old smock I binned. Rang my FEO as soon as I realised what I'd done and it took 5 days and a cheque for £7 to replace it.

The trouble with a photocopy is that there is no way to tell if you've had your licence revoked, this may sound a bit daft but my local rfd won't sell cartridges to anyone without their SGC for this reason. You can keep as many cartridges as you like as long as they're stored safely, it was mentioned in an earlier thread that it might be limited to around 3000.

I wasn't intending to try to use the copy for purchasing guns/cartridges, just for everyday use - going to my local club for practice sessions etc.

I intend to carry mine wherever I take my gun out, but sometimes forget!

I can't see how ANY limit can be put on the number of cartridges you can buy. There is no record of purchases kept. For all the police know I may never have fired my shotgun. Buy as many as you can afford! (that said my local gunshop only charges ~£2/250 more so it's hardly worth buying 5000 in 1 go!)

sorry chap, i wasn't implying that you're stupid, just that even for every day use a photo copy isn't any better than not carrying your licence. It doesn't prove that you still have your licence. ;)

My RFD told me that you can store up to 10.000 after which you need a license from the local authority, I have no way of proving this of course just his say so.

I carry my paperwork simply in case I am stopped for a traffic offence or something similar, if they ain't happy with you they can take the gun, I am even more paranoid now I have a FAC gun in the back of the van.. ;)

No Problem :/ - I didn't state the question very clearly, thanks for the information.

Incidentally, and this puzzles me a bit, if the plod come around to rescind your certificate and you say you have lost/mislaid it what they going to do shred the place looking for it ?, Essex police state that all notifications are to made by recorded delivery and then they send my FAC by snail mail, using a window envelope through which you could clearly see the word Firearm certificate! Bizarre or what !

Carry a copy!

Buy as many as you want up to the limit of an expolsives licence, I believe this equates to approx 15,000 cartridges.

You can't buy carts without the original.

AND...Every Police region now has your FAC/SGC details accessible on the PNC. So if you get pulled you only need to give them your personal details and they can check as quick as a radio call if you have SGC/FAC!!

I have heard this also but i was told that you would also need an explosives license

But the PNC will only state that the person is a FAC or SGC holder. It does not list serial numbers or gun types or any other info contained on the certificate

Exactly ! It also doesn't have as far as I know the ability to transmit images of the FAC holder to the officer dealing, so if you have no ID with you how do they know you are who you say you are ?..If you had bought gun(s) that day they would not be on the PNC but they would be on your paperwork ?..

a Simple answer..........

carry the copy with your address redacted unless you have made an addition that day........... any new additions amend your copy.

PNC will allow the officer to confirm your licence is valid and you have supporting documentation to assist him / her in doing a thorough job leaving everyone happy for just a few minutes of your time....

Police Powers – Firearms/Shotgun Certificates

Production of Certificate

Firearms Act 1968 s48(1)

“A constable may demand, from any person whom they believe to be in possession of a firearm or ammunition to which section 1 of this Act applies, or of a shotgun, the production of their firearm certificate, or, as the case may be, their shotgun certificate.”

Seize/Detain Weapon and Require Details

Firearms Act 1968 s48(2)

“If a person upon whom a demand is made fails to produce the certificate or document, or to permit the constable to read it, or to show that he is entitled by virtue of this Act to have the firearm, ammunition or shotgun in their possession without holding a certificate, the constable may seize and detain the firearm, ammunition or shotgun and may require the person to declare to them immediately their name and address.”

Failure to Provide Name and Address

Firearms Act 1968 s48(3)

“If under this section a person is required to declare to a constable their name and address, it is an offence for them to refuse to declare it or to fail to give their true name and address.”

why make things difficult for yourself and risk a note to the FEO about how obstructive you were.....................
