ME
Our house is too quiet following the passing of our Parson Jack Russell. We have said that our memory of him will always continue and nothing will ever replace him. We are now however thinking about getting a Parson Jack cross puppy to liven the house up again. There are a few crossed on the internet with Norfolk / Patterdale / Cairn / Border. We loved the Parson temperament anyone got any thoughts about crossing terriers ? We are not looking for a worker only a family pet with two boys 9 years and 6 years. I saw SamF's Patterdale the other week and it looked like a great companion. Cheers ME
al4x
Personally as a pet I wouldn't touch a patterdale because they tend to be hard work and born to fight. Jack Russels are big dogs in small bodies so have lots of character, cross wise you get a mixture of both mother and father but you won't know how much of each etc till the dog grows up. I do know of a Border just been to see the stud dog if you want to wait a bit but that will be quite a good pedigree one. It is horrible having a house without a dog especially JR's as they do make themselves part of the family, my only issue with one now is its hard to find a docked one and they just aren't right with a long tail
Raja Clavata
Can't help with the terriers but if your house needs livening up you are welcome to free unlimited access to my 15month old GSP - in fact just name your price per diem!? ME
Tell me about it Al4x ! We never used to have to listen for the doorbell as he used to be going ballistic, he would attack Mrs MEs cushions on the sofa and wrestle them in excitement. Every single bank statement and piece of post for 13 years had teeth marks in it. He was great with the kids and never once growled or even nipped them. The tails on JR's do look wrong long. I thought that it was allowed if they are "alledged" bought as working dogs I read some bits on the net about Patterdales and whilst all dogs are different they did seem less of a family dog. I like the borders, might have to speak to Mrs ME, mind you they can be a bit bad tempered too cant they ?

ME
get yourself a rescue dog.you will be giving a dog a second chance and you have the knowlege that they have been vetted. If it was just me and the missus I would, but you just dont know what some idiot has done to them before and what they could do to our kids if something is triggered. We took on a rescue puppy before, he was fine as he was only 12 weeks when we got him. My inlaws took on a rescue dog once and it had serious issues that the home didnt tell them It ended up having to be returned to the home which made them feel really bad. garyb
I've had to many run in's with terrier breeds Matt - you've got past history so probably know them better than I mind... My choice would be a cocker, great with kids and the wife - quite happy asleep on the sofa or on a peg...
al4x
Tell me about it Al4x ! I like the borders, might have to speak to Mrs ME, mind you they can be a bit bad tempered too cant they ? like all terriers yup they can, I've had a fair few JR bitches and they can all get narked with other dogs borders the same. Lots of socialisation does help but often they will get the hump with other dogs and bark even if they go no further. Mine used to do it yet went beating and saw loads of dogs and never did it. Its interesting with cockers Gary that there was a phase fairly recently I heard of a lot getting nippy with both family members and strangers, had it from some well experienced dog people as well but seems to have stopped so whether it was bred out or not I don't know. The best thing with buying a pup is you can meet the mother and sometimes father and ***** their temperament which gives you a guide as to how it will turn out as long as you do your part properly. Funny thing with terriers is they are usually spot on with family members but the rest depends how well socialised they are. My GWP used to go to my mums while I was at work and she has a JR and a Border and mine has taken on some of the less desirable traits from them. Learned to bark at the postman and you know when someone comes through the front gate Its fine as she is a big softie but sounds a lot more intimidating then a terrier
rickyspringer
I'd go Border Terrier mate, definitely a very well rounded terrier, the best out of them all in my opinion, cross terriers are spot on also. RS
JDFrain
Got patterdales myself and they are hard work and propper bad tempered not to be trusted as will fight with any dog any size, and if they have working blood in them then your asking for trouble so i would stay away from them if you looking for a good pet. I would possibly consider a good quality well bred border or even a bedlington at a push JDF
al4x
seems the more working blood in them the worse they are. I know a few borders that will take on any other dog but I guess thats the way you want them if you're going to work foxes with them
ME
Went out with the tribe this afternoon and ended up with a Jack Russell cross. The dad was a Jack Russell and Mum looked like a Norfolk or Border cross. He wont be winning any KC competitions as they dont have a "bitza" class but he is sharp as they come and into everything. Will try to get some better pictures up over the weekend.
