Drove round acres of rape fields yesterday(Warwickshire)and apart from a few birds feeding on the edge of a couple of fields by trees, nothing.Shot a few birds over pasture land including crows and opened a couple of pigeon crops at the end of the day.None had rape in them but all had up to 7 acorns and this would explain what the birds at the edge of the rape fields were on. :grumpy:

The chap who is lettimg me shoot pigeons on his land saw lots of pigeons in his rape field last week.  However when I set up this weekend, there were few to be seen and I finished with the grand total of 1, which was flying overhead when I brought it down.  Frustrated, I rounded off the day by spending an our or so around the edge of the farm and shot a number of rats instead.

Crafty things, pigeons - that's part of the fun! :=)

I had a similar story from last Friday.

Telephone call to say the "field is blue with pigeons".

I set up nice and early and never saw anything.

There were no pigeons anywhere near that field.

The rape in our area hasn,t grown very much yet.

This could be keeping the pigeons on other feed , but it does seem strange.

Maybe we need a really cold (not wet) spell, with a few frosts.

I had a walk round my shooting ground today (South Oxon) and saw zilch on the rape. There were however loads of woodies in the hedgerows. They still appear to be finding plenty of tastier grub than rape to feed on. Acorns are always a favourite, and I have in the past lofted a couple of deeks into an oak tree and set up a hide twenty to thirty yards away with a good degree of success. No doubt a few good frosts will bring them on to the rape in their usual numbers.

Hi MAJ,

Another South Oxon shooter. It's getting a bit busy around this neck of the woods!! Have a look in the 'Meet Up' section and you will find a few more.  :)

It's pretty quiet on the rape although there are a few birds floating about. I've heard of someone putting a rotor under an oak. Can't recall if it was successful or not.  :(

Just been out today on a reccy and saw good numbers of birds feeding on Rape around Oxford, flocks between 5-800...and not before time too! We were thinking it would be a slack winter again with so much beechmast, acorn and hawthorn berries, but things are now looking alot more promising ( and about bloody time too! )

Saw a few pigeons sitting in the trees next to a rape field this morning about 8ish, couldnt do much about it though as I was off to Santas kingdom with my little girl and theres one thing that women dont understand is the importance of last minute changes to go shooting instead of keeping the kids happy.
