Slow down..you are all over the place!

EVERY gun has a use, just depends if that use suits your requirement.

There is no .22HMR, with regard to what they all do/are capable of/costs/noise, then you could go on for pages, best look through the pages here and the web...with any luck someone will come along and spend some time with you.

Anything a bit more specific I can help with give me a shout!

Gun 1- used CZ 22LR. A few have come up here full rigged for 250-300. That is ready to shoot. For another 10 quid of ammo you're in business for a good while.

Gun 2- Used 223 or 222. Chances are your firearms department won't give you a 17 HMR on your first FAC for fox regardless of what area you're in. It also wouldn't be the best tool as a strictly fox gun. A 223 with a small moderator should run you another 300 or so for a used gun and you should be able to get on just fine with it. It will be a good fox gun for what you want and ammo won't be too costly or rare. A 22 hornet would also do the job well, but they are less common it seems in used guns and won't be as common. You'll have less choice in guns and ammo.

Alternatively, if you're only talking about an occasional fox here and there and 100 yards was a maximum, then you could get a 22 mag (WMR) for foxes and use the 22LR or even an FAC air for rabbits.

Personally, I'd go with 22LR/223.

Thanks

Rick

Hi, Noting the 2 uses and the ranges involved, it's very tempting to say just one, a WMR, rounds about £10/50. But 22lr, rounds about £5/50 and a 22 Hornet, not sure about ammo but not horrendous, which allows for some range creep for the fox is as good as any. ( Well perhaps except for just a WMR)

Cheers

Getting Fox on any rimfire is quite an "iffy" thing! Some forces will allow it yet some will not! It's high time that all the forces throughout the UK started "singing from the same hymn sheet"! You need to check what the minimum caliber allowed for foxes is in your area.

As for rabbits, I would be inclined to go for either a .22LR or a 17HMR depending on the ranges that you expect to be shooting them at. I have both and tend to use the 17HMR in daylight when I expect to be shooting rabbits from about 80 yards or so while I favour my Ruger 10/22 for lamping rabbits with as I can normally get to within at least 50 yards for them!

If you wanted just the one rifle for both rabbits and foxes you might like to think about a .22 Hornet but it might make a bit of a mess of rabbits if you want to eat them, I've not got any experience with that caliber, maybe someone else could advise on that one for you!

Hope this helps!
