VULTURE
Hi Boresnakes are they any good compared to the normal method of rodding, jags and patches etc. Never used one yet so curious Cheers Vulture
George1990
Good for a quick clean but is not as thorough as a proper clean. A lot of people on here only use them though
Shuck.
I use mine instead of the full kit I have.. does exactly the same job in a fraction of the time.. Jack Pike 'Snaky'. Cheaper then the kit and none of the hassle of screwing in the extension, screwing in the steel brush.. unscrewing steel brush, screwing cloth end.. unscrewing cloth end.. screwing fluffy cotton end.. etc etc Spray, pull through, and if needed once more.. job done

VULTURE
Hi So really i should use a snake for most quick cleans and use the rod kit now and again for a thorough clean then. Thanks for the quick replies gents Vulture
Shuck.
I am meticulous about cleaning my weapon, no pun intended. I haven't even used my cleaning kit at all since I purchased a boresnake, as long as you get the kind that has the steel bristles (I have the 'Snaky'). I use mine after every shoot I go, and just needs a single pull-through and the barrels are spotless, not a visible speck when held up to the light, it's amazing how much time is saved.. Of course for maintenance, you will need to clean out the chamber and for this you don't really need a cleaning kit, just an old rag and some gun spray. Only time I use my cleaning rod is when I get something stuck up the barrel
J@mes
I pull my boresnake through each barrel once, and then again with an oiled piece of kitchen roll in front of it. spotless!
George1990
But have you tried using the bore-snake, then giving it a proper clean afterwards? Not as clean as you first thought.
Shuck.
George I give a little spray, leave a few seconds, pull through and look down the barrel (steel proofed stainless) and not a mark, wipe a rag up their and there might be a little residue but as long as you spray it there won't be a problem. If you are concerned then you could just bung some bog roll in there and poke it out.. you don't need a cleaning kit I think there a waste of money since I started using the snake. BlaserF3
We had this argu... discussion last month and the general opinion was that the bore snake did not do a thorough job, is it better this month? Or worse?

malkiserow
I've got a semi and I find the boresnake very good for a quickie. Every now and again I do a full strip and rod it through. I like them
Dekers
It is, and has been apparent, that this arguement has strong opinions both sides, and if your gun still shoots straight them who is right/wrong. Simple fact is the Boresnake was "invented" to give shotguns a quick once over in the field until you could do the job properly because of the corrosive nature of most shotgun propellants (nitric acid)! Since those sensible and worthwhile days the marketing people have got to work and convinced many they are the new Messiah and a total solution. B******t..you cannot clean any gun of any description as well with a Boresnake as you can with a full set of rods/brushes/patches/solvents... and... just how do you clean the breach area/bolt with a boresnake?? A boresnake has it's uses, but also be very careful of the crown, particularly on small calibre rifles. Now then...where did I leave my tin helmet
Vipa
I use a bore snake. Spray with Legia, leave for 10 mins then pull it through.... spotless, to the eye. I'm sure they don't do a thorough job but I will then do a proper clean job once a week and take choke tubes out etc and clean the breech with an old toothbrush. It means I can use my gun almost every day and still give it an adequate clean every day without spending any real time doing it.
