well talked myself out of the 243 i was going to try and get as cant really see myself doing any stalking for a while yet so what's the pros and cons of the above cost for rounds reloading , noise recoil ect would be looking to shoot fox and may be rabbits as and when

i have looked on the past post but not found to much

personally i wouldn't use a centrefire on rabbits as they tend to get a bit torn up. the only problem i can see with the calibres you've listed is that you are restricted to what quarry you can legally shoot. munties, CWD, and fox. you can shoot rabbit if you want but it's a tad excessive, and expensive. May i ask what made you change your mind about a 243?

.22lr or .17hmr for the rabbits (my preference is .22lr) and .223 for foxes.

.222 is no longer being chambered in any new factory rifles, which is a problem if you want new, and .22-250 is expensive to shoot (compared to .223)

If you plan on homeloading, I would definitely go for .223, there is a large range of bullets for any .22 centrefire, with them all being the same size, but there is considerably less powder charge in .223, compared to .22-250 making it cheaper to re-load.

Whatever you choose, good luck :good:

Can't argue a lot with that, but if he is reloading then not much wrong with the .222 either, but factory wise .223, 100%. .222 is still being offered by some manufacturers but it is most certainly not featuring with many very prominently anymore. Why would it, very similar but not quite up to .223, it's just natural progression!

The 22-250 has more grunt, but is also noisy in comparison and less versatile in my view, certainly good for foxes, less factory ammo choice and a tad more expensive..has it's uses but .223 wins for me...but that could be because I have one..and a .243 and .308! :good::good:

I have the 222 tikka and love it to bits, it suits me and what i wanted it for and the ammo i use is only a tenner for 2 rounds so 50p a click is not to bad. having said that, a friend asked me last week what he should go for, same that as your asking. well after thinking about it for a while and weighing a few things up, i said 223. more choice in ammo, more rifles on the market, both new and secondhand so there's always a good deal out there. true or not but when i was looking i was told the 222 is the better out the two for upto 200yrds but then after that the 223 takes over.

If i didnt have a great deal on my tikka, i bought it before i put in for my ticket as a friend was selling up, then i would have put in for .223

Go for the .243. I put in for the .223 when I got my ticket, then about 8 months later got one of my farms signed off for deer. Had to put a variation in, sell the .223 to fund the .243 and do a load of messing about. If I could do it again I would go straight to the .243, although I have just bought a .22 hornet as an in between fox calibre.

tikka still list .222 as avaivable from new mate!!

My apologies, it is what I was told when I went to my local gunshop recently.

Still, your better off with a .223 than .222, more power and cheaper ammunition.

I know which I would choose out of the 2!

All good fox rounds. You wont be dissapointed in any.

.223 wins for cheap available ammo, but some prefer the extra hitting power and legs offered by the .22-250.

Maybe find which one you can get a good deal on and take it from there.

The .243 is an excellent fox calibre in its own right also, especially with the lighter heads. If youre local constabulary willi ssue it for fox, then you would have the right tool for the job if you secured some deer land in the future.
