kyska
I agree with Dekers, That IS a dramatic difference 7mm is 1/4 inch, thats a lot of metal for a ballistic tip bullet to pass through .... I wonder, do these ricochet a lot? I've never had a riqochet with the remmingtons, in fact only had one with the hmr in about 1000 shots. hyflier
I've never yet had a ricochet with the Hornady Vmax either (touch wood) But I've never punched a hole in a 7mm steel plate either I have an old tank of some description as a total backstop when zeroing, its certainly not 7mm thick and the Vmax simply dent it with lead splatter around the dent. Along with the post suggesting that Remmington loaded their own .17 ammo I wondered if there was something special about this ammo I needed to know about before going off to buy some tomorrow. I've had one or two "fliers" recently with the Hornady stuff and I've been reading the posts here and think it might be time to try a different brand Edited April 25, 2010 by hyflier

Saying that, if they don't shoot straight in your rifle it makes no odds I suppose.
Evil Elvis
7mm is 1/4 inch, thats a lot of metal for a ballistic tip bullet to pass through .... I wonder, do these ricochet a lot? Ive had 3 richochets in 2000+ rounds, so ..no not often. As for the plate? I was as suprised as you lot. However, they were an older batch or remmingtons that had been around for a couple of years and they have allgedley "toned" then down. I will however test one of my new batch that I have on the plate, Only one mind as i have already been moaned at about the holes in the pattern plate lol. The steel could be very weathered its been there for years.I will takke some pictures and shoot it again from the same spot next time in up there . vole
The shops round here are selling Hornady HMR ammo at £10 and £11. I bought 100 20gr xtp ones. Why are two shops selling them off cheap? Price war?
jay222
hornady v max and remington 17gr v tip have both worked well for me
hyflier
I bought some Remmington ammo yesterday and tried it out last night: Seriously impressed! It gave the same trajectory as the Hornady but with no fliers, the report was slightly different and felt smoooooooooth Edited April 27, 2010 by hyflier
Conygree
My bunny shooting is for dog food, I pre-zeroed up one day last year but hit the screw holding the black paper target. The splatter was very fine showing up well over the black target, bit worried as some head shots are often at an angle or even axial (they look as if they have had a nose bleed but have lets say multiple organ failure, so metal will get into the meat). So I stopped using blue tips and went for CCI 20g gamepoint, they work well with very few runners, most shots are heart/lung althought the dog is soon on the scene to pick up. So with 17g I would be limited to side head shots only for dog food Out last evening missed a few so stopped, I had skipped my pre-zero session - bit open so pulled through 1/2 a rifle clean strip a few times and re-zeroed up then off again. Dropped 4 by head shots

Why are two shops selling them off cheap? Price war? was they hornady blue tips? i get them for £10 for 50. the 20gr ones are not used as much as the 17gr ones,so the price i found round here was, that they tend to be cheaper. i use remingtons(but changed as i had misfire and bullet head stuck in barrel recently)and went for federal v-shok(same happened to these to),which are just as accurate as the remingtons, after i re-zero. blue tips i tried seem very good with a quick test,so will be on to these when the federals run out. al ps,cz 452 Edited May 1, 2010 by albob
feaks
Went out with the CZ and a box of blue tips earlier. One fox (50 odd yds) and three rabbits. Farthest rab was 168 yds. Nought wrong with them!
onlyme
been through a lot of remmingtons now, the reason why i use them , well take all the other ammo types and shoot them at 200 yards , all the other makes have powder charge/ primer inconsitancys compared to the remmys which you can line up with horizontal ruler the others are up and down a lot more , plus they work the best in my cz452 16" american barreled sak modded lil slayer the remmys certainly go through 2p's out to 150 yards no problem quite shocking really, considering they open up so well on rabbits and crows, always get pass through though on magpies with a small exit wound .... Dekers
You'll get a "flier" with 'em Who knows, nothing is perfect but I have been happy enough with the Hornady blue as well, took a rabbit at 120 and 160 yards and a grey at 130 last Sunday and none of them knew what hit them! Probably into about 1000 blue so far and they are ok, about 2000 left so who knows?
Beardo
i'm on my last 50 of Blues, then it's back to Remington Golds.
feaks
Hyflier, your're correct about that "flier". It was on the previous rab at 139 yd, hit it in the chest as opposed to the neck where i was aiming . Waste of good meat. To be honest i would be surprised if any brand of hmr ammo didn't throw a duff round now and then as it's mass produced just like .22 rds and we know what they can be like.
