Best place to buy a lab pup?

My mate has just bought a new pup. He has been going on about this amazing new pup for ages. We both have other dogs so i was suprised when he said he got it from what he called a puppy farm. His thinking is he can train it up anyway, so where it came from does not matter. I was asking about whether it was working stock, but he said he didn't know. The bloke also had springers, cockers, labs and terriers for sale. Where is the best place to buy?

Definitely not a puppy farm. If that is really a puppy farm, the dogs may have been overbred, inbred, underfed, mistreated, you name it.

Far better buying from a reputable breeder (Kennel Club can advise on suitable breeders) or from a breeder who comes recommended from someone in the know.

If you buy a dog with 'issues' its going to be a nightmare to get trained. A dog from working lines will be normally better suited to the job.

Puppy farms should be reported and shut down as quickly as possible.

Suppose you have to define the word puppy farm....there are KC breeders out there who breed plenty of pups but also as we all know there are the dodgy breeders also.

Im looking for a Lab myself at present and im spending loads of time looking at pedigree lines etc and trying to get the best i can...but once you have one then its all down to the training

Just because its a "puppy farm" of sorts doesnt mean there under fed or mistreated, seems a bit of a generalisation! Not defending the idea of puppy farming just saying it might not be like that!

I found my lab pup out of the local paper. Went up to see after phoning and the guy was a field trialler and does alot with labs :hmm: So I knew I was onto a winner :hmm:

Gun dog events and such can be a good place to source a dog :hmm:

Trials, Beater ,gamekeeper, roughshooter take your pick its a long established practice

amongst all the above to see a great working dog actually doing its job out in the field

and arrange to breed with their favourite not the silly breeders practice of breeding to

a show standard instead of for field ability. If you want a working lab I'll give you contact details

of a couple who work them.
