I have just coughed up £60 to resuscitate my computer. Got a pop up the other day (got pop up blocker,btw) that looked like a spyware scanner. I have Adaware and Defender but this was different. I could not close it down for long and smelt a rat. I got my Zonealarm to maximum settings and looked to see if there were any programs installed without my knowledge and there was. Cant recall the name but when I tried to get rid I got a flurry of Virus alert messages. I could not tell which were genuine and which were malware. My AVG would not load. I tried to restart in safe mode to do a scan but my start menu was paralyzed too.

I knew I was out of my depth so took it to the shop. They said a Worm had got into the registry and everywhere else.Took about 3/4 minutes. Not sure what I could have done. My daughter had down loaded some clip art off the net and I have been getting phishing emails lately. Never got a name for the bug off the lads at the shop but I would like the name and address of the geek who wrote it so I could share the grief with him a bit.

Be careful out there. I do regular bug sweeps and have up to date security but this one really snuck through.

60 quid, extortion that,next time,down load malwarebytes,start pc up in safe mode,run malwrebytes,should solve problem and all other threats on your pc.sometimes malwrebytes will run without safe mode but not allways.

Cheers C. They put Malwarebyts on the machine when I got it back,never heard of it before. I tried the safe mode thing after switching off. Might have been pressing the wrong button or something but nothing seemed to be working normally.

 

ps. found the name of the bug in Malwarebytes quarantine; Fraudpack Trojan. Says its a a nasty one on the Net. Wonder if all they did at the shop was to scan like you said? You learn the hard way dont you. I did panic a bit cos my kids schoolwork was saved for the next day.

I had a similar problem and in the end I purchased Kaspersky. Problem was the virus/wormy thing implied it was protecting my computer and wouldn't let Kaspersky run, (presumably as it would find the virus/worm thingy and deal with it). After trying allsorts I eventually got Kaspersky to work......albeit it limping along, it eventually found the rogue and sorted it out. A right royal pain in the backside and took some getting rid of.

Trouble is Kaspersky is still protecting my system but everything runs so much slower now because of it.

I did the same to my old mans computer about 12 years ago when I downloaded a clip art pack. Virus scanner didn't pick it up, but it made a hell of a mess of the PC. Dad went berserk

Why do people create these things?Idiots like that need a good hiding and there fingers breaking!And i need to go back to anger management classes.Not being very clever on the old pc im constantly worried by these things even with protection.Do the creators of these things make money from them or is it just to be malicous?

You had been infected by a rogue trojan-theres a really powerfull one going around at the moment that goes under about 20 different names-it convinves you that your computer is infected and offers you the solution for about £40.Everybody should download Malwarebytes free edition and put it on a memory stick cos the trojen can make running programs from your desktop almost impossible -if you get the "virus" then you can just pop your stick intio the usb and run the program-sometimes you need do it twice.There are so many good free anti virus software programs available that you should never need to pay.

Dude, you were ripped of, Malabytes Malaware is free to download, and will get rid of ANY trojans worms etc, I was so impressed that i ACTUALLY bought the registered version, registered for life £18 I think it was.You will need it, every time bloody microsoft updates the ******** find new loop holes to creep into your computer!!!

And yes,Elvis,I was ripped off. The shop owner has a conservatory like St Pauls due to my PC problems.

that virus is doing the rounds at the min alot of people are catching it of face book , a simple system restore and a registry cleaner is all thats needed

I had this on my laptop. Took me two days of researching and scanning to get rid of it (and im pretty good with computers). the version i had came up with the antivirus xp 2010 adware and spyware. also installed its own programs, trojans and affected the cache, registry and prefetch.

 

Malyware bytes only solves the simple version of this virus if you catch it early enough. It manifests itself in the registry, the cache and as a rootkit so it reinstalls itself if you dont get rid of all of it immediatly.

I have the free Avast on all mine.

 

The trouble is that trojan won't let you run Windows because it is acting as if it is a windows file and, even if you find the infected file, it won't remove it.

 

I've had this worm myself.

On Avast go to Menu select boot time scan the PC will then restart and do the scan in DOS.

 

When it finds the infected file then select Delete yes to all and the scan will continue and it will delete all infected files.

It will then continue to boot up as normal and the trojan will be gone.

 

Even if you did get ripped off it's still cheaper than a new PC and all the lost work and all the potential damage us click and hope types could inflict.
