Should We Be Worried...?????

Recommended Posts

The Prime Minister, 1st April 2012:

"The government has now had time to study the findings of the group investigating the toxicity aspects of the ongoing use of lead shot. We have always said that any replacement must be non toxic, economic and effective. We find that the work of this group was well planned, of the highest scientific standard and that their final report concluded that the use of lead shot should continue.

However, the government are of the opinion that, as steel is patently non toxic, the cost is approximately that of lead and is expected to fall and that an increasing number of sportsmen are voluntarily using steel already albeit with the recognised small reduction in effective range, that the arguement is invalid.

Consequently and to allow for re-tooling and restocking by the manufacturers, the manufacture of lead shot in the UK will cease on 1st September of this year. To permit the stock currently held by retailers to be sold, it will remain legal to sell lead shot cartridges until 31st December of this year. Similarly to permit sportsmen to utilize their existing and future holdings the use will remain legal until 1st April 2013."

Am I the only one picking up on this...?

Looks like by the quote, it's all signed sealed & not far away from being delivered. Call me paranoid, but I cannot help but feel that this is imminent.

I'm also getting the impression that BASC is just preparing us for the worst.?

Or is it just me...!!

Maybe David could comment on this,

Maybe David could comment on this,

BJ, hi, your 5 points in order:

Yes, almost. It's heartening that in the view of the PW membership we have no cause for concern.

BASC tell us that here will be no change in the foreseeable future and I concede that this is impossible to quantify. I think that my dates were premature and used them for effect, thinking that c2015/6 would have little impact. I wish now that I'd used 1st August 2010/ 1st April 2011 as the first and last respectively. Since I wrote that quote, I've changed my mind and when I gave the findings of the LAG I was giving the Group the benefit of the doubt. Now I believe there isn't one in as much as they are going to come out in favour of banning lead shot.

Your third point; yes emphatically. In spite of what we've been told regarding BASC policy (reiterated in July/August S&C), David BASC is almost constantly coming out in favour of steel and when not has not a word to say against it.

No, but sadly it looks like just the 2 of us.

Can't answer your final point, but await with interest......

Basc states that "defending lead shot unless UK-based peer reviewed published research demontrates that it caused significant damage to human health and the environment" is their policy. Rightly or wrongly (perhaps someone could help) I feel that proving significant damage to the environment is going to be difficult. With regard to food, I'm not quite so sure. As ever, any final decision is going to be a lash up commonly known as a compromise. Why not stop all the faffing about and save a fortune and just put a ban on selling or offering for sale any game shot with lead.

Cheers
