Shooting a .222 out to 300 yards.

Recommended Posts

I got a bit bored this afternoon so i decided to go out and see how far I could push myself (Rangewise) with my .222 and still hold on to a degree of accuracy. Up till today I had only used it out to around 175 yards so it was an "interesting" little exercise for me! The results are quite surprising, especially when you think that I only paid £175 for the rifle (Complete with a set of Nikko Scopes) and then spent just under £70.00 for the scopes that are on it now (A brand new set of Nikko Gameking 4-16X50 from J S Ramsbottoms). When you combine that with the fact that I am only using PRVI Partizan 50gr Softpoint ammunition (The cheapest I can get) the results are even more surprising.

Have a look at the video and let me know what you think!

How much windage did you have to give, for a 9-3 O'clock 25mph wind ?

I was very minimal, less than an inch to be honest. Over that distance I found that the wind deviation was so minimal it wasn't really worth bothering about, plus it had swung round a little and was blowing more into my face than sideways. As you can see from the last 3 shots each of them would have been a very dead if I had taken an engine room shot (Which is what I will normally aim for with foxes)!

good shooting there!! its the only way to see what the gun will do is get out and try the longer ranges,it can be a real eye opener. :good: another way to realize the power they got,get yourself some 1/4 inch plate and shoot it..222 will go straight through at 100yards. :good:

Ah wind change... makes sense now.

25mph L-R @ 300 yards would need some serious hold off to put them on paper like that :good:

I'm very careful of wind beyond 150 yards... my 243 will drift about 4 inches @ 200 in a 10mph cross wind, I use the clock face method to judge how much (if any) drift I can expect on long shots.

Good shooting FB

I might well try that mate. I still want to try pushing myself a bit further but I have to wait a bit as I am still recovering from a visit to hospital after a voilent reaction to some painkillers that were prescribed to me.

I have to admit that i took out a couple of rabbits the other day with the .222 at about 150 yards and there was very little left to pick up, they were almost liquidised - The power is awesome and I am finding out that the accuracy is too!

i find 1" hard to believe???

my custom 223 running 60gr vamx @3120fps would give me 10.8" of wind drift in a 10mph wind,

300 yds in a 25mph wind i would have 27.4" of wind drift

how can a 222 with a lighter bullet in any wind only need 1" of windage correction (1moa)in a 25mph wind @ 300yds??

Did you not read the third entry by me where I answered garyb's question and said that the wind had swung round and was blowing more into my face? Also ,if you look closely at the video footage you will see that to get the 300 yard range with a straight line of fire while retaining a safe backstop I had moved round to a different position from where I was originally firing from which would also have made the wind in a slightly different direction again.

Hopefully that will explain why I did not have to use the 27.4 inched of correction that you say that you would have done with your rifle.

Please note: I have no reason and nothing to gain by exagerating or lying so I would rather people did not insinuate that I was or am, plus it is on video for all to see!

Dunno about 300 yards.....but i was shoting my CZ527 in .222 tonight at 65yds....130yds and 180 yds....the point of impact was the same...which suprised me,they were 40gr blitzkings moving at 3720 fps.

I'm going to try 250 and 300 next time.

Go for it Soulboy and let us know how you get on. It would be interesting to know what eachothers limitations are!

Good luck mate1

I wasn't insinuating anything just asking how can you only need 1" of wind correction in a 25mph wind. I'm not on here to insult or argue with anyone i just asked a question, you quote in your video 300 yd shot in 25 mph wind.

I weekly shoot rabbits out to ranges upto 450 yds an I always have to add Windage in the slightest breeze an also the rotation of the bullet also moves POI over longer distances.

Also a rangefinder is more accurate than pacing out the distance you might not be anywhere near the distance you have paced out

so was the drop you were getting the difference between the top of the paper and the bull? Its an interesting thing to try I've not pushed my .223 much distance wise but will have to give it a punt now stubble is about. Interestingly 96 of my paces is 100 yards according to my rangefinder

any reccomendations for a rangefinder?

are the cheap ones on ebay for golfing any good just as a guide?

any info welcome :good:

Apparently the golf ones are no use for shooting as they use the height of the pin/flag for the range finding... I use the Guntuff one from JSR and its perfectly adequate for airgun ranges. I think its good for 400yds (not that I shoot at that)..

HTH mate.

Rangefinders vary depending on your needs an shooting. My swaro's are 1500yd ones but I have had readings as far as 1987 yds. Don't think you'd need them for air rifle or rimmie ranges but a half decent ones for couple hundred quid would be good using for CF rifle

As always you get what you pay for you could pick up a leica set for about £250-350

Everyones paces would be different I'm 6'3" an my paces would be longer than my mate who's about 5'2" an then you get the people who pace theirs out with their boot laces tied together making it further :good:
