Shadowchaser
SOmething i have spent plenty of time on being RH with Left eye dominant and worse vision from right eye i started shooting RH one eye open, now shoot LH both eyes open, its much better with both eyes makes judging speed and distance easier and much better peripheral vision to see the traget (big difference on sporting less so on trap!) Find a coach you like and work with them I am trying to have one lesson a month and trying to shoot once a week although not going very well at at the moment.... I have researched shooting lessons and there is a place about 45 mins drive away. I will have to get a lesson or two booked. I don't shoot as much as I would like. Work, jobs at the weekend, shopping, friends who shoot going on holiday or not being available when I am are the biggest problems. So far this year I have had only four clay shooting sessions. Beretta on here is your man He's based in North Wales, but he coaches in the North West. He's slowly sorting me out, and that takes some doing

Dekers
You need to see an Optician if you have a problem after 12 shots. Both eyes open is the accepted way. I don't give a fig, I'm never going to make the Olympics and one eye shut does me well enough! ATB!!
TonySmith
Some interesting reading here... I am a 'mongrel' Right handed, when I started shooting rifles in the Sea Cadets I found it easier and was more successful shooting left handed. onto shotguns I had to got the LH route, left eye dominant. I cannot shoot with both eyes open, have tried,TBH I should perhaps go to the practice stand with a slab or two and embarrass myself trying to shoot with both eyes open. The 'kid' on the other hand.. is a 'lefty' shoots left handed, writes left handed, but plays guitar right handed, fly's his RC planes with a R/H set... I was meaning that after a time my face becomes fatigued. So far it's the only way I've ever shot, but next time I shoot clays I will try both eyes open. The adivce I have received on here so far is much appreciated.
berties
I've been shooting for a few years now but not frequently enough. I have never had any shooting lessons as such. I am right eye dominant, and shoot right handed. I have always closed my left eye and looked straight down the top rib. This does make my face fatigued after about a dozen shots though. However I have spoken to people who say I should shoot with both eyes open. I have dry mounted my gun and if I keep both eyes open and look down the barrel (at this stage only at a static item in my house), I see the top rib in double ie cross eyed. If I focus on the front sight the item in the background becomes double crossed. How will I go on trying it with clays? Is it wise to start off both eyes open and then close one for the kill? I realise this may have been discussed before, but I find it an interesting point. And any advice that will help me to hit more clays is welcome. I was told by 3 instructors I was right eye dominant but had alesson with COACH off the forum who said I was mid eye basically the same as you I get a blur over the rib I first tried a easy hit but never did the trick then got the little clear disks from Abacus run by clayman put them on my shooting glasses and it blocks out my left eye getting action on the rib With the two aids I am back on course I could always shoot on instinct ie the gun goes where I look but had trouble with long range distances and any clay coming from the right ,but have broken that and am climbing the ladder with plenty of practice good luck hope this helps
GregR
I'm right eye dominant .. and I've never really thought about what I actually do in the butt! I'm pretty sure I'm a one eye kind of shooter. I recall going shooting with a few mates on a stag, and one guy was having such difficulty he had a patch fashioned from a cartridge box to prevent his left eye impinging on his aim! Shadowchaser
GregR have you ever tried shooting with both eyes open for a sustained period? If so how did you fare? I suppose part of it is personal preference, though the majority view on here seems to be to shoot both eyes open.
