The bush at the back is basically an extention of the thread and provides some ridgidity and stops flexing etc, you want it tight but not so tight it wedges itself on the barrel when you screw the moderator on, I have a T8-AR and the bush i got supplied fitted nicely onto my mini-14 then i bought a CZ527 and the bush nearly wedged itself onto the barrel as it was more tapered, i just got my dremmel out and skimmed abit off the edge to make a tight fit that slipped off when the mod was unscrewed.

The bush on the back of the mod was so tight that i couldn't fully screw it on, it was scraping the blue of the barrel, I thought I'd try with a few thou clearance so this afternoon got some emery paper wrapped around a piece of dowel in a battery drill and opened the bush out until it fully screwed on with enough clearance so I could just slide 1 thickness of glossy magazine paper between the bush and barrel, The rifle was spot on before i did all this and when i just checked zero it was shooting about 12" left and 18" low, so now re-zeroed to shoot 1" high at 100yds, shot a 3/4" 4 shot group, so its shooting better than i think it ever has

There should be a slight tolerance to allow for barrel expansion when its hot according to my gunsmith. When my Remmie 700 was 24inchs long the mod was tight before it got to the thread and then it loosened up a bit further on, I thought is was a little slack but it had to be like this to get over the unevenness of the barrel. I had it chopped down to 20inches and the mod fits perfectly, just a slight interferance fit.

Too tight is not good, if your barrel is not cut perfectly concentrically and the bush is tight, there is the possibility of moderator cant when the barrel gets hot, this will effect POI, you need an air gap.

I don't know if there is any specified gap, never heard of a figure, but it will be small, perhaps a couple of thou! :D

Too big is not doing you any favours either, the idea of the bush is a little added bracing in the event of knocks, bumps etc to the mod!

Over barrel mods also get hot and retain heat (so does the area of barrel they cover), so I guess there is a very small argument to say too tight keeps the heat in longer as well, not good!
