Wildfowling over most of of the Scottish foreshore is free with the exception of reserves , some off shore islands and a few local council run areas. However it is only good form to get a permit from the local wildfowling club , you may even get a bit of advice as to a few good spots too. There is a club on the Solway.

Not sure about loads of free shooting is available! Most of the landowners I know would go bonkers if people were marching down their foreshore cammoed and armed without so much as a by your leave. I may be wrong as I shoot mainly inland on permissions but Id look into it carefully before going out with your gun!!

The Wigtown bay wildfowlers has just folded due to the RSPB buying most of the land they shoot on. I think you can get on at carlaverlock reserves via dumfries wildfowlers or something and you may be able to get a ticket at wigtown itself still used to be £7 a day I think? still but not shure I'll ask around. There is no trespass law in Scotland and as such you can access the foreshore as long as you follow the "Scottish outdoor access" codes of practice.

probably true but most of my neighboring farms would still go mental unless you asked perhaps thats me thought lol!

i understand that its free under the the old bylaw 'right to recreation' just didnt know if solway had any reserves

and yes no tresspassing laws but dont think that includes people qwith guns, not sure on that but either way it would be best to follow a footpath :good:

I just dont want to travel all the way up to the top of scotland this year...well i do want too but the bank balance says no!!

Thanks for the replys

Yes, you can walk A to B across farmer C's land so long as your gun is in a slip, dog under control etc. You can even walk across RSPB owned land to get to the foreshore to shoot. This has opened up alot of foreshore which was previously difficult to access.

The only no shooting area's in Scotland are Nature reserves (one or two other spots like bombing ranges aswell) and most of them have a permit scheme, Caelaverock, Wigtown bay, Eden, Montrose basin etc. Otherwise its all free shooting.

A lot of the free foreshore on the Solway is controlled through access to it. So basically it is free but you cant actually get to it unless you have a permit from the Solway Wildfowlers, or thats how I understood it when I lived up there. They have a deal with the farmers who own the land you would have to cross or park on.

There is a large section totally free near Brow Well which was good for duck on splashes and also a good section available through SNH for about £30 a year.

There are also various guides operating in the area, not sure how reputable they are though, one in particular at Powfoot.

The right to roam has done away with restricting wildfowling bt restricting access. Just park up, take gun and dog on lead and walk across whatever land you need to to get where you want to be.

Happy days, bet the Scottish Parlimentarians did'nt figure on helping out the poor wildfowler when they instigated the right to roam.

It may well be the case theoretically but not in practice. I lived in Dumfries until a few years ago and went on the Solway a few times a season. Basically on a lot of it you can only gain access via permit, either through Scottish Natural Heritage or through the Solway Wildfowlers. The problem on a lot of it is there is nowhere to park up, and thats what the farmers provide, if you have a relevant permit! This situation exists on most of the foreshore between Powfoot and Caerlaverock with the exception of Brow Well and the banks of the Lochar Water.

I gotta agree you just don't march around with guns law or no law it's at least polite to ask IMHO.
