Terrierist
Hi All.. Always keen to learn what others are using and what they like, what is your favourite cartridge ( 12 bore) for pigeon, past and present and why so please? Did they kill cleanly/pattern well, were they smooth on the shoulder? Trying to verify extra cost of expensive cartridges and wondering if any of the more experienced shots amongst us could argue the point for a dear cartridge, or vice versa with cheaper cartridges, please though, don't mention D and J... "shudder" just finishing up the last of them and they will NEVER find their way into my guns again. All the very best. Kev
Floating Chamber
Nowt wrong with D&J which has been proved over and over again.
Terrierist
Nowt wrong with D&J which has been proved over and over again. Seems that a lot of shots are finding that D and J are not for them... Myself included... your initials wouldn't happen to be D and J and have summat to do with Lyalvale?? Seriously. another pal of mine shared the slab with me and we both were of the same feeling... Best to all... even if you like D and J's!! Floating Chamber
Remember 'lead' (pronounced 'leed') You have to shoot in front, not where the target has been. Now that there are TWO of you missing with D&Js, why don't you both share the cost of some lessons.
Floating Chamber
made me gulp too... they WILL be blowin raspberries and stickin tail feathers up... Rubbissssshhhhh! My mate shoots hundreds a day with 19grams from a 28 bore. I used to shoot loads with a .410 in the 1960s with 12 grams.

I used to shoot loads with a .410 in the 1960s with 12 grams. And I also use a 28 bore, plus a .410 to teach the kids and less able.. But to ensure clean kills, a 21g 7 or 8 would not be my ideal choice to cleanly kill a pigeon... Suppose you use 9's skeet choke 26" barrels and Hi vis clothing just to make the targets that bit harder??? Chuckle.. love it..

Gosh! You know me!!!! Talking about HiViz clothing.... In the 1960s my mate and I invited a tosh along for a bit of pigeon shooting. He turned up dressed like 'Harry Lime'wearing a near pure white mac with the belt pulled tight. He wore a trilby and black patent shoes. We shot nowt. However, he was mobbed by seagulls! Gordon R
Maionchi - skeet 9's. I used a lot of them on Sporting - late 80's. Not seen them around until this year. Loved them.

MC
Favourite cartridge in the past would have to be the one, the only, BAIKAL RECORD. You would never find a harder hitting cartridge and as I use to buy them for less than £50 a thousand I shot them all the time. Clay grounds banned them because of the noise yet I reckon some of the cheaper end ranges now are louder. Especially Kent Velocities. Favourite cartridge now is either Eley HB Pigeon or RC Titano 31gr
al4x
did you have to wait for the smoke to clear before you worked out you'd hit the target MC or was there something a bit iffy with the ones I got given that must have been nearly as old as me  Another vote for the Eley HB's seem to work very nicely, bit of a kick to them but not too bad

The reason for asking is I have a sealed plastic packet of 100 or so #5 Baikal Records which have sat unused for 10+ years that I should perhaps dig out for the pheasants if they really are that good. They always kicked like hell in any of the light 12bs we had but should be a bit more comfortable in the heavier Baikal I have now.
al4x
paul try a few first, I'd suggest you won't want to use them on pheasants unless you want to lend a few to people for a laugh. Work they may nice to shoot is another matter
Floating Chamber
Baikal cartridges first appeared as 'AZOT'; there was pic of a fox on the box. They were green with a rolled turnover and sometimes contained (when we looked) an interesting variety of pellet sizes, together with differing weights. This was late 1950s early 60s. They were 5/3d (27pence) for 10. The long, bright orange muzzle flash and tremendous bang was exciting to this once 15 year old with a bruised shoulder. No I am serious, Reacords were and probably still are a damn good cartridge. If you are looking for a home for your ones then let me know. Yes they kick but then so do all cartridges and some of teh "CHEAP" English Sporter, Kent velocity or D & J kick just the same as the Records ever did. Floating Chamber
Mine 'kicked' because the gun I was using was a Gardone Boeller Blitz 'Fusil Special'. Still have one; they weigh about four and a quarter pounds! However, I also fired Eley Maximum and Alphamax! I was a glutton for punishment in those days! Still, not complaining! Yes they kick but then so do all cartridges and some of teh "CHEAP" English Sporter, Kent velocity or D & J kick just the same as the Records ever did. The old man bought them originally and never got on well with them so got stashed away only coming out for the odd days where there was a chance of a close range fox - and at that job they are very good and as you only ever had a few shots, at most, the kick was fine even in the light game guns we both used. I shot a few alongside Winchester GBs at pigeons last week (having mixed them up by accident) but until I checked the empties I had no idea which was which so the kick using a more suitable O/U doesn't worry me at all and TBH I never noticed any smoke from any either. I think I definitely will try them on the Pheasants later on, it will be interesting to see how they compare to the more modern game cartridges. I'm in the camp of D&Js not being that bad at all and would rate them way above GBs for game use even in 7.5 shot :hmm: (well pigeons and rabbits anyway - Pheasants would be pushing it a bit) Since I don't want to hijack the thread too much - my favourite cartridges in the past were 20b Express Supreme Game - which it seems you can no longer get in 20b and my current favourite - 12b Express Supreme Game had some unbelieveable kills at range with these in plastic wads - but really don't think the fibre are as good - but maybe that's my imagination.
