Which rifle and moderator etc for nice quiet shooting?

cheers

Thats an easy one None!

The 17 HMR is an excellent tool but they are far from quiet. Yes a mod does take the bang out of it but not the crack. Ive found this dosent realy bother the rabbits too much but HMR and Quiet dont belong in the same sentence. Here's a little pic of my setup enjoy :good:

17 HMR 16" barrel, Trigger kit, sak mod and a nikko sierling nighteater scope.

I agree with Luckyshot, the bullet makes a lot of noise, unless you hit something close range. I shot a rabbit at about 20yards on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised at how "quiet" the HMR itself actually is.

Trouble is you don't buy an HMR to shoot stuff at 20yards :good: send a bullet 100yards down range and then listen to it echoing all around... I've found this has it's own benefits though, bunnies don't seem to be able to work out where the noise/danger is coming from so they sit there. Often had 2's and 3's with the HMR when rabbits are sitting together... probably more than with the LR where the bullet makes a great big thump when it hits the rabbit, the HMR's frangible bullets seem quieter on impact than the LR subs.

I have a SAK on mine and can't see much point in changing it, yes you could spend more and save a little "gun" noise but the bullet noise will be the same so what's the point.

For a scope I have a Hawke Endurance 30IR scope on it. Gun is a 20" CZ452 Silhouette.

It's been said, HMR is not nice quiet shooting!

ATB!!

Have you ever stood 20 - 30 yards behind someone shooting an HMR? You will suprised how quiet it actually is. I know you can't do anything about the supersonic crack but the rabbit will never hear that.

The actual muzzle report from one with a SAK moderator on is very low indeed.

My set up is CZ 452 American 16" barrel, SAK mod and a Hawke 4 - 14 x 56 pro stalk scope. More than adequate for the ranges you will be shooting.

it is compared to a centrefire.

Mc is correct in his noise assesment, what is really interesting is a shot without a sak on. That shows you what the mod does

It's all relative, and it is certainly SLIGHTLY quieter than most centrefires with a mod, but compared to a .22lr with subs it is very noisy.

Noisy by my definition is what I hear and what the neighbours may here, I have no interest in what noise may arrive at a bunnies ear just after he died!

ATB!

You are having a laugh aren't you. Only slightly quietly than a centrefire? ? ? ? I know which one I would rather fire without ear defenders.

Without a moderator they are both loud, the centrefires usually more though because of the propellant. The sonic crack is also different in different calibres and speeds.

For clarity I am talking about both moderated, there is little difference between all my centrefires and my HV Rimfires, but the Centrefires are louder, but NOT substantially! Most moderators are reasonably competant at taking out the propellant crack, be it rimfire or centrefire, what you are then left with is an assortment of sonic boom tones with marginal differences in propellant crack reduction!
