Nial
I've been planning on buying a new jacket for the winter, it's starting to get cold so.... I want something that's waterproof and warm, I think I've narrowed it down to the following two... Jack Pike 3 in 1 .... http://www.surplusandadventure.com/shop/ho...ers-737475.html Or Deerhunter Ram... http://www.swillingtonshootingsupplies.co....ter-Ram-Jacket/ They are both £99 (I've seen the Ram for £99 somewhere this was just the first link I could find). Any comments or recommendations? Thanks, Nial.
vole
Never used Deerhunter but have used the JP for a couple of years and cannot fault it apart from the usual lack of big pockets which I find with all of them except my old Barbour. Darren h
I've got plenty of Deerhunter clothing and it's all good stuff, never had any Jack Pyke so cannot compare unfortunately.
al4x
Deerhunter every time, the gear is well made and lasts. Got a few Jack pike bits and I don't think they are quite as good.

I read somewhere that because the waterproof layer in the Deerhunter kit is a removeable membrane that the pockets etc can get wringing wet. Have you found that much of a problem? Nial. Beardo
I've got the ram and it's fantastic, it's not a 3 in 1 like the Montana so you sometimes need a jumper/fleece in extreme weather. Better quality than the jack pyke
HW682
Thanks HW. One last question, is the Ram jacket warm? The Jack Pike jacket as a removeable fleece but there isn't much info on the Ram lining. Nial. This is obviously a personal question, but to me: yes, it is warm. In fact I hardly wear mine because it is too warm most of the time. (I bought a plain coloured one for the odd club game days but last year just ended up wearing a shirt and waistcoat) I have a camo Montana which is my usual coat. I will wear just the outer shell most of the time and add the membrane if it wet or windy. Only time I need the fleece liner is when sittting still decoying on a cold morning. The Ram lining isn't fleecy, but still warm. It also has under arm ventilation zips. HW682
Nial
Thanks for the feedback guys. Looks like it's the Ram with enough room for a decent fleece under it! Nial

I've got the montana trousers with the lining but not tried them in the wet yet, the removeable lining is ideal as you can wear them in the summer as well
chrisv
Nial, I have the Ram trousers and the Montana jacket. My experience of crawling through soaking wet Scottish heather in them is that I stayed warm and dry. You are right though, the outer layers were saturated including everything in the pockets. The car seats weren't too good either! I have some Seeland trousers that have a waterproof shell, but they are much more noisy! silpig5
ive got 2 jp hunters , green and woodland . green doesnt look out of place on formal days , woodland is great for rabbitts and rough . ive tried on deerhunter coats but was put off by a horizontal seam near shoulders . im lazy and drag my but (of gun)up to mount and that seam snagged it . other than that both good coats . adi

Cosd
I've read a few times that the Ram jacket is a decent bit of kit but have no experience with it, so I can't give an opinion. I do though have the normal Jack Pyke Hunter jacket I have been using for just over two years now and cannot fault it other than maybe it's a bit too warm. I have been through brambles and nettles and been stuck so hard I have to force my way through, and the jacket doesn't have even the slightest snare in the cloth. Absolutely wins my vote for quality, even if it had a few snares or rips I would have accepted them as my own fault for over abuse, but it still looks like new. One of the large pockets had the flap inside once leaving the pocket gaping open, I caught it on a branch whilst squeezing through growth to retrieve a bird, that unstitched the pocket slightly but having had mum do a quick repair have never had a problem with it other than that. Jack Pyke, full marks
