henry d
Just got in from a nice but cold evening on my own permissions as lately I have been helping out on an estate with the `keeper using highseats and latterly with the majority of crops in, lamping. We were out together a while back and I shot all 4 of the ones we spotted, and since then he`s fed up as he isn`t getting many We ended up with one last night of the two we saw(don`t ask !), so I was hopeful that I might get something tonight. I started off well as I needed a couple of rabbits and shot one near the steading and then another just 50yds away on the other side and as I had to get out of the car to get over the gate to retrieve it I took the .22 and the maglite just in case I saw another. I had a shine about and there 80yds away was a fox !!!! He didn`t stay long and even though I got back to the motor quick and around into the field he was nowhere to be seen. Anyway I saw just deer and hare throughout the rest of the tour and although I was tired and cold and am working tomorrow I decided to check out a farm I don`t tend to visit too much. Field one, nowt, field two, fox 50 yds away and not stopping for anything. As this field is triangular and bordered by 2 roads I set off as fast as I can on the single track to head it off and there it is 300 yds out in the field from me and I can`t get in without having to undo a load of fence wire to get the gate open. So I try calling, three different calls and eventually it moves and at first I think it is trying to get downwind of me by following the fence, then the sheep in the next field leg it into the centre of their field as it goes off through there Three point turn time and I`m back on the case, eventually I spot her and stop, only to see her seem to melt into thin air. I head off in another direction that I don`t think she will go to give her time to settle and come back 10 minutes later. Still not there I follow the second track I was on and three fields later, there she is and this field has a gate open ! In I go and again a disappearing trick, but I think she has turned back into the adjoining field like she did with the sheep, but I know there is a gate halfway up and I can get in there. So without putting the lamp on I creep up and in line with the opening there she is, but the gate is shut !!!!! The field is 250 ish across and I estimate she is at least 3/4 of the way across, so I decide to take the shot if I can get a steady crosshair on her. Wind is L-R and not as feirce as earlier so I give very little windage and spot on her chest as she sits nice for me. I slowly let the trigger go and the bang splits the air and a satisfying thump comes back to me as I see her slump in the scope. 215 paces and I`m chuffed and having a well deserved beer. She looks to be a yearling as her teeth are still pearly but not needle sharp and she seems to have a bit of weight to her too.
