Hi all,

This is our first trip of the season 3 of us went up Me Sheldon and Daz off of PW…

After a 4 hour drive up telling Daz about every goose we have ever shot up here building his hopes up!! We seemed to be going a bit quicker the closer we got to my ponds with the thoughts of getting a flight in , and as it happened managed to get there just in time to dump everything put the boots on grab the guns and dogs and off (What a surprise).

We got out the jeep along a hedge I new they where fighting over, I put the shells in the gun and within 30seconds first goose was on the floor right over the top of me 2 yards away from the motor… and then it started goose after goose on the flight Daz got his first goose along with more everyone got shooting... I called the flight at 12 and said that’s it boys no more tonight we could of shot on but we were up for 3 days.

Next day spent most of the time showing Daz around and finding where the geese were feeding for some decoying on stubble, had 2-3 flights down on a part of the river!! Shot a handful more, plenty of Rabbit shooting and the odd crow and a fox of a night.

Anyway after finding the field the geese were on set the decoys (6 plastic and 6 dead birds) built a nice hide and got set after a good couple of hours geese started to move right up the valley! I started calling and they played ball decoyed well not all of them but plenty I stopped the flight at 20 geese it was a great flight.

At the moment there are about 1300 geese on both ponds with more on the river… ducks!!! well more then you could shake a stick at but we leave them be till a bit later on.

All of the geese are breasted out and given to friends a family

well what can i say...i've still got geese going thru my head....

it was a brilliant start to my first ever goose trip...

we got there about 6.30 or so and after the quickest intros to a family that ive ever known (not that we were in a rush or anything...lol)..Al told us to get our gear and we were off...straight down for the first flight...well as we pulled under the flight line in the field Al shouted 'quick get out they are coming', sure enough in the distance we could see the first skein...

wow...

the rabbits are great ..but this was something else....talk about goose fever....

they came in a little higher than expected at first ...but then they played ball..coming right over the tops of the trees...

get down, get down...was the cry ..which made me laugh as the hedge was six foot and i'm 5''6' lol

twelve geese on the first flight and a smile that would have to be surgically removed!

The weekend continued in that manner..up at 5.30..in the field by 6ish..with some real quirky highlights...like when sheldon did a deal to swap 30 rabbits...for some food in the local butchers..and we ended up with £30 leg of lamb for dinner...that just fell apart ...beautiful.

but the real highlight was, when after chasing geese all weekend and thinking we had sorted out where they were feeding, we set up on the field and waited...and waited...and then after 3 or so hours ,Al said well look at it this way at least it hasnt rained...can you guess what happened next...lol

in came the rain...but also in came the geese...just the most amazing sight watching them flank mountain side and head to our right about a mile off...but out came the caller..

and they just turned..my stomach was in my mouth....

3hrs of waiting...45 mins of what looked like a bombing raid...skein after skein after skein....20 geese in the bag...and back for dinner and stories...lol

I ve been waiting for you to put this up spud so i could see the pics....thanks mate ..totally excellent weekend

I think they taste good!

They do taste good mate the young ones anyway!! But some of the old one’s my god they are tuff…

There is a saying; cook an old goose in the oven next to a house brick for 4 hours on a low heat pull them out together try the Goose if it’s still tuff put the goose in the bin and eat the brick.

Sorry old but a good one
