fergie
I would like your thoughts on a Winchester select light field Are they any good? as much information on these as possible please
Scully
General concensus is that they're not a patch on the older models such as the 101 and 6500,but having only handled one and not shot it,all I can really comment on is the build quality, which to be honest, compared to the models just mentioned,I wasn't too impressed with.If it's a Winchester you're after, then you wont go far wrong with a 101.There are many knocking about,in various bores and configurations, there's even a lightweight. tweedledee
i too would reccomend a proper winchester like the 101 series. the new ones don`t seem to have the same balance.i`m sure they are well enough built though.
COACH
I`m a Winchester fanatic and I have to agree with the guys. The old one are some of the best guns ever built. The new ones are ok for the money but no where near as good. The Select Light is only any good with 21gram cartridges, anything else and the recoil is far too much. If your set on a Winchester go out and look for a 6500 mk2 with the 28 inch light barrels. Absolutely fantastic, best handling gun I`v ever had and I`v ever used, and I`v used just about all of them in my job. I still have my 6500 mk 2 and won`t part with it for any money and people have tried believe me.

COACH
Serious kit that mate, if you know for one a nice one under £900 buy it. Incidentally nearly all the old Winchesters feel very loose and easy but that`s the way they were built it`s not necessarily a bad thing. Take the forend off but not the barrels and see if the barrels move about by shaking from side to side. Hold the action and stock with your right hand and forearm and try and pull the barrels about with your left hand, see if there is any movement or not. If there is a little it can be tightened by a Gunsmith but if it`s bad then leave it alone. Edited October 3, 2010 by COACH
robc89
Basically i bought the above gun from the cla gamefair this year. I put a few cartridges through it and the stock cracked. BWM agreed to sort it out but as there were no stocks available they would send me a brand new one from belgium. That arrived and while putting it together and openeing and closing the action i noticed a small scratc/ crack that looked like the begining of what had happened previously. I dint accept the gun and told BWM i do not want another select light as i doubt there build quality. He assured me that there wasnt a problem but i wasnt taking any chances. They are sending me an English field which i will hopefully have this week. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...p;hl=winchester Heres the topic about the above. It was probably just coincidence that the 2 guns were not good but i didnt want to take anymore chances this close to the season.
suggs
Can't comment on the light field but I have the new select sporting topcote and really rate it, have put about 3000 carts through it and not missed a beat, feels very well built to me and well ballanced, I've used it back to back with my pals Browning 525 and there's little if nothing in it quality and performance wise... fortune82
Winchester 101 XTR Sporter 28" multi What are thes like Brilliant gun. Had one for ten years and regret getting rid of it. Put about 10,000 shots through and only ever needed new ejector kickers which were about £200. If looking for one look inside the forend iron at the kickers. Look for hairline cracks on them as that is the first sign of them going. Also look for cratered firing pins. I am now looking for another 101, maybe a grand european if the budget will stretch! Thats about spot on if in good condition. My 101 XTR Sporter went for £700 in the shop I traded it in at. It had a bit of wear and tear but was in pretty good nick. There is a gunshop called Heritage Guns near Dorset I think that always has a good selection of 101's. Google him and have a look. COACH
Yeah £750 is smack on for a nice 6500 now. The mk2 is best. Yep! Heritage Guns in Shaftesbury, Dorset is the place to get an old but very nice Winchester. I go there every couple of weeks for a look. I have to agree that the Topcote is the best new Winchester at present but the wood isn`t real, its a coating so must not be scratched or knocked at all. I saw a Topcote in a shop a few weeks back where the finish had been chipped and was starting to peel off! Looked awful and no chance of a rub down and oil to solve the problem!
