Well went out to do some clays today with my 4 week old Select 2 Topcote only to find the "topcote" is pealing off:( mostly on the forend at the front edge but after closer inspection we found lots of tiny bubbles in various places and they just flake off leaving the bare wood behind. have no idea whats started this happening as im very anal when it comes to cleaning and looking after my guns to the point were there cleaned before i even take them home from the shoot..

took it straight back to my RFD that ive used for years, he wanted to send it back to the uk dealer and get it restocked etc but i refused this stating i will no longer want to keep the gun as it may well just happen again with the new stock, in the end i left with a credit note for the full amount but he declined to give me a cash refund and i didnt want to start a row with them as they are a great shop and i use them all the time..

had a look for another gun but was short of time and there wasnt much that hit me other than a pristine 325 grade 5 multi for £1695 that im very tempted by but will cost me another £700, did see a few brand new 525's for £1380 but they looked a bit plain with not the nicest wood..

really feeling a bit deflated now, i did really like the select but always in the back of my mind was the topcote going wrong just never expected it to happen in a month ???

really dont no what to do now........

Your dealer should be more than willing to give you a full refund as he would be able to get this back from the supplier, but I know how difficuilt it can be when you've dealt with someone for a long time, and don't want to cause ill feeling.

The 325(I use to own one) you mentioned, being a high grade, would be a good investment, much more so than your Winchester, and is the gun I would personally go for.Great guns.

But I can't help thinking your dealer is being a bit unreasonable here.

Shame they didn't hold you in as high esteem though as a valued customer ....... If the gun wasn't fit for purpose, the one thing you WERE entitled to was a full refund.

I may be wrong here but I thought if you paid cash they are entitled to give you cash back?

Will go back in there tomorrow or over the weekend and have a propper look at there guns and go from there. I am very tempted by the 325 as it's one of the nicest guns I've had my hands on and it wasn't there when I bought the select otherwise I prob would have bought it then so may all work out for the best...

all happy again, decided to buy the 325 as its just sooo nice, came with 8 chokes too :look:

so with the full refund on the select it cost me £660..

Now that is a nice looking gun :look: , Forget all the Top cote stuff, after all they are only a cheap bit of timber with a flashy veneer.

What you have now is a quality gun that should last you forever, and if you ever decide to sell it will have a good re sale value.

Hope you get on well with the 325
