Stealth Stalker
We had our beaters day yesterday, a first for me. I haven't enjoyed myself so much in a long time. Oddly quite a few beaters didn't turn up, which made things harder for the ones that did. We had 11 guns, the owner & guest 5 non shooting beaters & the keeper, who worked tirelessly all day to make sure we had a good day. We split into 2 groups. Group A beating with a couple of walking guns in the beating line to take any birds that lifted and flew back over the beaters. And group B on the pegs. It wasn't long before the birds started to show over head. And I was presented with a fairly high cock bird, that I cleanly missed with both barrels :*) I can only put it down to exitetment. I soon got in to the swing of things moving the gun through the birds, bum, belly, beak, bang. And they were soon falling nicely out of the sky. I had a couple of nice right & lefts, & my first shots at partridge which whizzed through the air like bullets! My tally for the day was 22 pheasant and 4 partridge for 64 cartridge which is exellent going for me! We finnished the day with a total of 146 pheasant 31 partridge & 2 woodies. Everyone had a great day & I can't wait for the season to start again next year. In all the exitement I forgot to take any pictures of the day Sorry Stealth Stalker
Catamong
SS, Well done matey, thats an excellent bag considering it was the last day of the season. All that practice over the decoyed woodies is obviously helping. Cat.
Stealth Stalker
Cheers Catamong All the practice on the woodies certainly has helped. The keeper put down over 4000 birds last year, and the average days bag has been 275 so there were still alot of birds about. The keeper has also told me I can get on the estate for some roost shooting and decoying over the maize stubbles, so I am well happy SS
Cranfield
Congrats on a good day. Interestingly, our Shoots last day turned out to be the best of the season and when I told a friend this, he said the same thing about his Shoot. There doesn't seem to be any one reason why this should be.

There doesn't seem to be any one reason why this should be. One reason I believe this often happens is that most of the beaters happen to be better shots than the paying syndicate members, so you may have fewer birds to shoot at, but the kills to cartridge ratio is much higher. Piebob
Perhaps the current cold snap is making the birds retreat into pens/cover more, so when the beating line comes though they flush more birds? I can't remember there being a cold spell at all this season, although we did shoot one day with a covering of snow which resulted in a good bag. Cat I would agree that could be the case in some shoots, but in the two I am referring to they were not Beaters Days. I don't think the Probation Service would want us arming our Beaters. We did have a light covering of snow and the cover has definitely laid down a bit (at last), these could be contributable factors.
old rooster
Had a last walk round our farms yesterday with my oppo. Had a couple of geese and some ducks earlier in the week, 9 pheasants and you won't believe this but my mate shot FOUR geese out of a skein with ONE shot !! Missed completely with the other barrel, which was probably just as well given that we had to carry them up a hill back to the pimp mobile. Dunkield
Interestingly, our Shoots last day turned out to be the best of the season and when I told a friend this, he said the same thing about his Shoot. There doesn't seem to be any one reason why this should be. Maybe because all the guns that went before you couldn't shoot too well? The shoot I have beat(en)? on is great, every time the guns have a nightmare the beaters are all rubbing their hands together in the wagon on the way back Edited February 3, 2006 by stuartp
Stealth Stalker
Stuartp I know what you mean, everytime a large flush flew over the guns untouched, we'd all yell more for us come beaters day  Old rooster Thats some shot, 4 geese for 1 cartridge, are you sure the one at the top didn't take the other 3 out?
