bakerboy
This is a link to the Letchworth Black Squirrel. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildlife/4298608/Origins-of-British-Black-squirrel-discovered.html I have spoken about this with a number of people, who were to say the least a little sceptical. The Squirrel can be found openly in Hitchin, Letchworth and Stevenage, plus surrounding villages, and in good numbers. It is a lovely looking creature, but does the same damage as the Grey. We could really do with a greengrass picture to show the creature in its full glory. Terry bakerboy apologies if you have seen it before Edited November 22, 2010 by bakerboy
al4x
we used to have a taxidermist paid quite well for them Used to see them at home and in Gosmore when I lived there
Frenchieboy
The newspaper article mentions the American Black Squirrel - Could these be the offspring from a couple of American Balck Squirrels that have escaped from captivity at some time? I've heard of and seen both black and "red" (Ginger) rabbits but never a black squirrel!
al4x
supposedly they are a genetic throwback, there is a good 15 miles between a few of the ones I know about. Though haven't seen one on the estate at home in ages

ballybricken
Aren't these just a genetic mutation of the grey tree rat?
955i
If I remember rightly, there was a big fuss about these a while back saying that they would be outcompeting not just the reds but also the greys.
